Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
R. S. HARRIS, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS;
RUDDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,572, dated June 16, 1857.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. HARRIS, of the city of Galena, county of J o Daviess, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Steering Steamboats and Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, Ato wit:
In order that ship carpenters may construct my double action jointed rudder, I give the following description:
In constructing the rudder I first take the ordinary rudder, and shorten it about one third, more or less, then insert through the saine, horizontally at C and D two iron rods with eyes in the stem or outer end. I also insert rods of the same description at corresponding distances through the outer rudder F as shown at C, D, with the eyes toward the bow or front end so that when put together, and a rod passed through they form the hinge upon which it turns.
The tiller of the outer or second rudder F can be attached with stirrups, or in any ot the ordinary methods, and should be as long as it will work clear of the main rudder post, and the end attached to a rope or chain, or other equivalent and way between the guards or davits, the outer end of said chain drawn taut and made fast to the guards or davits. I also use in the chains midway between the point of attachment to the guards and the tiller of the second rudder, a screw swivel for the purpose of slackening or tightening the same as necessity may require. Thus constructed and attached it is operated in the same manner as the ordinary rudder.
Having thus briefly described the manner of constructing and operating my inven tion, what I claim as my invention, and desire to patent is 1. The application of an outer or second rudder attached to and working on the co1nmon rudder.
2. I also claim the short tiller held and worked by stationary chains or ropes, as above described for the purpose above named.
Dated at Galena Feb. 9, 1857.
ROBERT S. HARRIS.
