Description

April 15, 1930. c. c. ANDREWS LOOS E LEAF BINDER Filed June 14, 1928 2 V ALA (1cm new S latented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOOSE-LEAF BINDER Application filed June 14,
This invention relates to an improved loose leaf binder or cover that is especially suitable for the binding of catalogue pages, memorandum blanks, printed forms and the like, and
its object is to provide a loose leaf binder or cover that is attractive in appearance, is strong and durable, that is simple of construction, and is very economical of production.
More generally the object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive loose leaf binder that possesses all of the merits of the more expensive binders of prevailing type so that it is available at small cost for use as a binder for catalogue pages, cheap note books, etc.
The foregoing objects, with other and more specific ones hereinafter appearing, are attained in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved loose leaf binder with a batch of leaves bound therein; Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sectional details on the respective lines 2-2 and 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. i is a fragmentary perspective view of the blank from which one of the covers is made; Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the sti'li'eners; and Figs.
6, 7 and 8 are details showing the manner of applying the stiffener to the blank.
0 The two covers, designated 1, are identical and each is made up of a sheet of suitable flexible material, such as heavy, tough paper, and a stiffener that is designated 2. The stiffener may be of any appropriate material, such as a heavy cardboard or strawboard, wood, metal or fiberboard, though, in the interest of economy, I prefer to employ an in expensive grade of stiff and strong cardboard.
Referring to Fig. 2, I term the portion 1 a flexible flap the portions 1", 1 and 1 I term flexible layers and the portions 1", 1, 1 and 2 collectively I term a binding edge portion.
In making the cover, a blank, such as that -15 designated 3 in Figs. 4, 6, 7 and 8, is cut to proper size and proportions, and preparatory to wrapping its edge that is to be disposed adjacent the back of the binder about the stifiener 2, the same may be scored longitudinally along the zones indicated by the dotted lines 1928. Serial No. 285,330.
3 in Fig. 4. WVhether or not scoring is necessary or desirable depends upon the material from which the cover is made. Before applying the stilfener 'to the blank, a suitable adhesive such as glue or mucilage, may be 5-5 applied to the area of the blank between the inner dotted line 3 and its adjacent edge, after which the stiffener is laid upon the blank contiguous to said edge, as illustrated in Fig. 6, and the edge portion with said stiffener is then turned over to the position shown in Fig. 7 and next to the position shown in Fig. 8.
Two covers are then placed together in opposed relation and punched with holes for the reception of binding posts or other suitable fastening means, the binding post herein illustrated, and designated 5, being of standard type and consisting of a threaded stud 6 that is screwed into a tubular socket member If the covers are to be applied to a batch l of leaves at the time of manufacture, said leaves may be interposed between the covers prior to the punching operation so as to insure absolute alignment of the holes in said leaves with those in the covers of the binder.
While I prefer to glue the stiifeners to the covers as above described, this is not particu larly essential, though it is desirable principally as a means for holding the parts to gether when the binder is disassembled. When assembled, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the parts are secured in place by the binding posts 5.
It is evident from the foregoing that my invention provides a very cheap and simple loose leaf binder that is substantial and durable and convenient of use, and it will be noted that whether the material of the cover is scored or not, the presence of the stiffener in the folded over back edge of the cover defines a line along which the cover will break when initially opened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A loose leaf binder including a cover member of thin, flexible material and a narrow stiffener member, one edge portion of said cover being wrapped aboutand secured to said stiffener member with the edge projecting between the stiffener and the portion of the cover wrapped thereabout, the length of the cover in the direction of the length of the stiffener being substantially as great as the length of said stiffener.
2. A loose leaf binder including a cover member of thin, flexible material and a narrow stiffener member, one edge portion of said cover being Wrapped about and secured to said stiffener member with the edge projecting between the stiffener and the portion of the cover wrapped thereabout, the length of the cover in the direction of the length of the stiffener being substantially as great as the length of said stiffener, said edge being cemented to the portion of the cover member adjacent thereto.
3. A loose leaf binder including a cover member of thin, flexible material and a narrow stiffener member, one edge portion of said cover being wrapped about and secured to said stiffener member with the edge projecting between the stiffener and the portion of the cover wrapped thereabout, the length of the cover in the direction of the length of the stiffener being substantially as great as the length of said stiffener, said stiffener and portions of the cover member wrapped thereabout being provided with holes for reception of binding posts.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
CLIFTON C. ANDREWS.
