STEAM ENGINE Filed Deo. 7, 1927 2 sheets-smet 2 INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Apr. 8, 1930 UNITED STATES PME-:N5111 OFFICE y WALTER B. GORR, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T SPINNER ENGINE COM- PANY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OIF PENNSYLVANIA STEAM ENGINE Application filed December 7, 192,7. Serial No. 238,426.`
This invention is designed to improve the cross head guide construction. It is desirable in engines to have the cross head guide exactly in alinement with the axis of the cylinder so that the reciprocating parts may move freely and without binding. In constructing engines forming the parts so as to give perfeet alinement between the cylinder and the guides has given diliiculty particularly with relation to cross head guides having open sides giving free accessrto the cross head.
With such open guides it is desirable to reverse the direction which the guides face with the reversal of the running direction of the engine so that the wearing surface of the guide willv at all times be the maj or surface.
With the present invention the cross head guide is so formed as to be positively alined with the cylinder and also is so' arranged that it may be readily reversed thus forming the guide for engines running in either direction. Features and details of the invention will appear more fully from the specifi cation and claims.
A preferable embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows V:-
Fig. l shows a side elevation of an engine, partly in section.
Fig. 2 a front elevation of the engine.
Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3.
1 marks the main frame of the engine, 9. the cylinder, 3 the cylinder head, and 4 a cross head connecting frame. This connecting frame 4 has a {iange 5 which rests on a seat 6 at the upper end of the main frame and is secured thereon by screws 7. The upper end of the connection has a flanged seat 8 with a cylindrical shoulder 9 and the flange is seated on a seat 10 at the end of the head 3, the head having a cylindrical internal shoulder 11 receiving the shoulder 9. The cylinder head 3 likewise has an annular shoulder 13 fitting a shoulder 14. A cross head guide 15 of cylindrical form has a cylindrical main surface concentric with the shoulder 9, being preferably machined with the same set up. A cross head 16 has its main wearing surface cylindrical and conforming to the cross head guide 15. The cross head 16 has the extending edges 16ZL and guide bars 17 secured to the guide frame extend over the extendededges 16a, thus holding the cross head to its seat. A piston rod 18 extends from a piston 19 through a gland 2O in the cylinder head. A connecting rod 21 extends from the cross head to the crank, the crank being shown in dotted lines.
It will be noted with this construction that the cross head guide is open at the front side giving direct access to the cross head; that the guide frame may be machined with a cylindrical guidesurface and that the cylindrical shoulders 9 are exactly concentric and the surface of the seat 8 is in a plane directly at right angles to the axis so that the ordinary turning operation perfectly alines these parts, in fact, it isdifiicult to get them out of alinement. The same may be said of the cylinder head, these parts being turned in the ordinary turning operation and the resulting parts necessarily being concentric and in alinement so that when the head is placed on the cylinder it is again concentric result. The cross head guide frame may be rotated'l()o about its axis so that the pressurc on the cross head guide surface will follow the cylindrical or major guiding surface in the running of the engine, this presk sure being due to the angularity of the connecting rod. The structure, as will be noted. permits of a frame which may be readily uncovered as shown to disclose the operating parts.
While I have shown a separate cylinder head 3 between the seat 9 and the cylinder walls I do not wish wto be limited to a construction in which such part is interposed between the cylinder proper and the supporting seat.
l/Vhat I claim as new is 1. In an engine, the combination of a main frame; a cylinder; a connecting frame between the cylinder and main frame having a cylindrical cross head guiding surface at one side, an alining and centering seat for the cylinder, and a support Which rests on a seat at the upper end of the main frame; a cross head on the guiding surface; and guide plates extending over the cross head.
2. In an engine the Combination of a main frame; a Cylinder; a connecting frame between the Cylinder and main frame having :L cylindrical cross head guiding surface :it one side, an alining and centering seat for the cylinder, and a support which rests on a seat at the upper end of the main frame, said connecting frame being reversible on its axis;
a cross head on the guiding surface; and guide plates extending over the cross head.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
