This invention relates in general to a box inwhich articles, etc., may be packed and shipped, subsequently displayed, for example on the counter in a store, and from which the articles may be dispensed. to the consumer.

lOne `object of the invention is to provide a box of the character described embodying a novel and improved construction comprising two telescoping sections each of which is adapted to serve as a cover for the other when the sections are in telescoping relation, each section having means adjacent one end to support articles to be packed and displayed and having a space at the other to receive said means and the articles supported thereby on the other section, whereby the box serves for packing and shipping when the sections are in telescoping relation and for displaying and dispensing the articles when the sections are separated.

Other objects are to provide such a box one of the sections of which consists of a bottom, side flanges and end flanges and an articlereceiving pocket or the like adjacent one end, while the other section is substantially the same except that one end flange is omitted and the end portions or" the side flanges opposite the article-supporting pocket are cut away so that said side flanges and the other end flange of the second mentioned section may telescope within the corresponding side and end flanges of the other section, the cutting away of portions of the side flanges of the second-mentioned section providing a clearance for the pocket of the first section, and to obtain other advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding and like parts are designated throughout the several views by the same reference characters- Figure l is a composite perspective view of the two sections of the box separated from each other and in the relative positions assumed preparatory to closing the box for packing and shipping;

Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the box;

Figure 8 isa perspective view ct one of the sections of the box in article-displaying and dispensing position, and

Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the other section of the box provided with two article-receiving pockets for smaller articles.

Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the box comprises two sections A and B which are adapted to have a separable telescoping relation so Vthat each may serve as the cover Jfor the other for packing and shipping articles, etc. The section A is shown as comprising a bottom l, side flanges 2 and end flanges 3, and at one end of the section A is arranged an articlereceiving means such as a pocket Ll. `This article-receiving means may be of any suitable form for receiving and supporting different types of articles, the pocket being shown for the purpose of explainingV the principles of the invention. The pocket is formed by one end flange 3, the end portions of the side flanges 2, and a transverse strip 5 which is connected to the edge of the end flange ad the side flanges. rlhe articles may thus be received betweenthe transverse strip 5 and the bottom l of the section, and as shown the articles may be envelopes 16 containing, for example, powder.

The upper section B comprises a bottom 6, side flanges 7 and one end flange 8. The bottom 6 is slightly smaller than the bottom l of the section A. rlf'he side flanges 7 terminate shortrof one end of the section, as indicated at 9, a distance equal to the width of.

the transverse strip 5 of the section A, and the corresponding end flange is omitted. At the end of the section B opposite thecut away ends of the side flanges 7 is provided articlesupporting means 10 which may be identical `with the pocket l of the section A.

lith this constructon, it will be observed that the section B may be telescoped within the section A, that is, the side flanges 7 and end flange 8 of the section B may be slipped inside the side flanges 2 and one end flange 3 ofthe section A with the pocket l and articles therein of each section occupying the space between the pocket 4: and opposite end of the other section; and the portion of the bottom 6 of the sect-ion B beyond the ends 9 of the side flanges 7 overlies the transverse strip 5 of the pocket 4 on the section A. This is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. Preferably the side flanges of both sections are decorated for display, and to protect the decoration during packing and shipping, a cover section 11 may be slipped over the section B, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.

It will be obvious that the article-supporting means 5 and the articles must be ot' such size and in such relation to the respective sections A and B that they will clear each other when the sections are telescoped, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. It will also be observed that when the sections are separated from each other the articles in the pockets 4 and 10 may be effectively displayed by standing the sections edgewise on a counter or the like or hanging the sections upon a wall with the pockets at the lower edge. The box thus serves as a display and dispensing apparatus as well as a packing and shipping box.

It is preferable to attach a brace or support to the outside of the bottoms 1 and 6 of the sections for holding them in upright position. As shown, this brace or support may consist of a strip of cardboard 12 secured at its ends 13 to the section and foldable between its ends so as to normally collapse substantially flat against the bottom of the section. To hold the section in upright position, the strip is unfolded as indicated in Figures 3 and 4 so as to provide a brace.

In Figure 4 of the drawings the box is shown as provided with a plurality of articlesupporting means, for example two pockets 14 substantially identical with the pockets 4, one arranged at the end of the box section and the other spaced inwardly from the end adistance to properly accommodate the articles desired to be packed and displayed. Other article-supporting means such as clips, etc. may be utilized instead of the pockets herein described.

It will be observed that where the cover section 11 is used one of the supports 12 is en closed during shipping. For the purpose of protecting the other support against injury, we may secure it to the bottom of the respective section as by means of a strip of paper 15 pasted to the folded end of the support and the corresponding end Hange of the box.

While we have shown and described the box as embodying certain details of construction, it will be understood that this is primarily for the purpose of-illustrating the principles of the invention and that the details may be modilied and changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. XVe are aware of Patents N o. 776,042, of November 29, 1904, No. 1,454,860, of May 15, 1923, and No. 1,503,161 of July 29, 1924, and do not desire to be understood as attempting to claim such constructions.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:

A packing and display box comprising two complemental telescoping sections each serving as a cover for the other when in telescoping relation and each having means adjacent one end thereof to support articles to be packed and displayed and having a space at the other end to receive said means and the articles supported thereby on the other section, one of said sections having a bottom, side iianges and end flanges and the other having a bottom, one end flange and side flanges each of which terminates short of the end of the bottom opposite said article-supporting means to provide a clearance for the article supporting means of the first section when the sections are telescoped together.
