Description

Ap 1930- I H. A. TAYLOR 1,753,671
' BASKET AND CDVEH THEREFOR Filed Jan. 30, 1928 #03 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 8, 1930 UNITED. STATES HAMBLEN A. TAYLOR, or SAN BENITO, Texas, essre'non o J..0. rREnTiss Aim, nswrTTn" BASKET AND covnr. magma -My invention relates to improvements in baskets and covers therefor.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel fastener for a basket cover which will effect the functions of the usual slat extension on the top of the cover and which securely hold the cover from upward and lateral movement on the basket.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel fastener of the kind described and novel bail handles on a basket adapted to be releasably engaged by the fastener so that the cover is held from upward and lateral movement.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel cover fastener for a basket,
which is simple, cheap, durable, not liable to get out of order, which is easily operated in fastening and unfastening, which affords strength to the cover and at the same time enables it to be light, and which is eflicient in operation.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, V
Fig. l is a side elevation of a basket and cover therefor provided with my improved fastener, shown fastened to the handle of the basket. j
Fig. 2 is a top view of my improved cover, the fastener being shown with its end portions unbent and extended through the bail handles.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through a portion of the basket and cover, the fastener being shown bent over the bail handle. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the central vertical transverse plane of Fig. 2.
Similar [reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
1 designates a usual form of basket having at opposite sides two bail handles 2, each of which in its transverse portion may be provided with a depressed portion forming a kink 3.
The basket cover may comprise the usual ring 4 having mounted thereon a top cornprising the usual slats 5.
Extending across the slats 5 is my, im- 7 proved fastener which may comprise a pliable wire formed into a loop designated by 6, the end portions of the fastener being made'to encircle and tightly embrace, diametrically opposite portions of the ringt, and respectivelyprojecting outside the outer sides thereof, and adapted to be respectivelyextende'd through the bail'handles2, Figs. 2-and 4,
and to be bent over the transverse portions of thewhandles 2, in which bent condition, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 8, the end portions of the fastener 6 respectively embracethe kinks 3, and bear'against both inner sides of each-of said handles 2, thereby holding the cover from upward and'lateral movement from its operative position. 7
I The fastener deflects the functionsof the usual diametrical slat having extensions arranged to beextended through'the handles to hold the cover from lateral movement, so that such extension slatmaybe eliminated, while havingits functioneffected'by the fas- -tener -6,' which at the same time holds the In applying the cover to the basket, the
end portions of the fastener 6, while in their horizontal position, are extended through the handles 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, after which they are bent over the transverse portions inwardly and downwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thereby securely holding the cover in its proper operative position.
To remove the cover, it is but necessary to unbend the bent over portions of the fastener 6, one end portion being bent downwardly and outwardly, after whichthe cover may be lifted from the basket. With the provision of the novel fastener herein described, which is fastened to and extends clear across the top of the cover, and is extended through the bail handles and is bent thereover, the slats of the top are held from bulging, accessory fastening means are eliminated, as is the usual diametrical slat that has projecting ends that pass through the bail handles, and which is diflicult to insert through and to remove from the handles, and which has its projecting ends subjective to being struck with liability of damage to the cover.
The 'provision of the single loop fastener affords double-protection to the slats of the top of the cover, and a firm engagement with the arms of the bail handles, for holding the cover from upward, lateral and turning movement of the cover on the basket. v
I do not limit my invention to, the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may
be made, without departing from the spirit of my invention;
What I claim is 2- x 1. A basket cover having a 'top disposed, when in operative position on a basket, wholly between the bail-handles thereof, and a. pliable fastener extending clear across, fastened to and projecting outside opposite edges of the top and adapted to have its end portions extended respectively through said handles 5 and. to be bent thereover to hold the cover from upward movement, and arranged to engage both inner sides of each of said handles to holdthe cover from lateral movement. 2. Avbasket cover having a ring and a top mounted, thereon, and a pliable fastener fastenedto and extending clear across said top and projecting outside opposite outer sides ofsaidring and-encirclingsaid ring at opposite diametrical portions thereof, and adapted to have its end portions extended respectively through opposite bail handles of a basket and to be bent thereover to hold the cover from upward movement and arranged to engage said handles to hold'the cover from 4 lateral movement. I r
