My invention relates to box-wrapping machines; and its object is to provide a machine of this character which will simplify and lessen the cost of producing covered boxes.
The invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
- In the accompanying drawing,- 1 Figure l is a transverse vertical section of a form block and associatedparts of a boxwrapping machine with regulating devices embodying the invention applied thereto; Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary plan views of Fig. 1 with the regulating devices shown in different relative positions; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view, shown in perspective, of a box blank of the flange or extension-bottom type and the paper wrapper therefor; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a box-blanksuch as illustrated in Fig. 4 having its sides secured by means of corner stays; and Fig. 6 is a'view similar to Fig. 1 and including portions of the machine frame and mechanism for actuating the box-forming and box-wrapping devices illustrated inFigs. 1, 2 and 3.
It'has hitherto been the practice for flangebox wrapping to secure the side and end wall elements S and E'of a box blank together at the various corners by pasting thereto pieces I of paper P, as shown in Fig. 5, for the purpose of retaining the blank in the form of a box.
The setting up and staying the box'hlank as above explained has been efiected by a special machine, or manually, prior to putting it into the machine which performs the wrapping. :With the present invention, however, the box is notjstayed, isplaced inthe machine .with the extension bottom B glued thereto as represented'in Fig. 4 above the wrapper or coverin paper D, which is utilized for securing t e parts of theblank in relatively box form and obviates the use of stays or other corner fasteningmeans as heretofore. .7.
The present invention, eliminatingthe necessity of usingbox stays, or other fastening means ancillary or supplemental to the cover ing, facilitates the manufacture :of wrapped boxes of the extension edge type, lessens the labor, and reduces the cost of production.
The wrapping machine in which in I vention is employed is provided with a form block 5 secured to the lower end of a vertically movable plunger 6, said form-block beingarranged to cooperate with a work supporting block 7 which is secured upon the upe pier end of a vertically movable lower spin- Also provided in said machine for reciprocator'y movement transversely thereof are horizontal wing+bars 10 arranged parallel, or nearly so, with the side surfaces of the blocks 5 and 7 Said wing bars 10, one at each side of the form blocks 5 and 7 (Fig. 1) are each arranged for the reciprocatory movement above referred to by well known means such as illustrated in Fig. 6 and may be described as follows: Rigid with each wing bar 10, but one is shown in Fig. 6, are depending arms as 30. from which extend horizontal guide rod elements 31 through ways such as 32 provided in a member 33 of themachine frame. The guide elements 31 are, each equipped with a stud 34 extending through a slot 35 of alever arm 36 extending upwardly from arocker shaft 37 mounted 'inlhangers' such as 38 which'extend downwardly from the respective framemember 33. Therock 4 shaft above referred tohaskeyed or otherwise secured thereto a crank arm 39 which'is operatively connected by a connecting rod 40 withpan arm 41 of a vibratory lever 42 which V is fulcrumed at 43 to the machine frame. Another arm 41 of said lever is in like manner connected by a connecting rod 40 with mechanism (not shown) similar to what I have described above for imparting reclprocato'ry movement to the otherwing bar shown in Fig. 1 but which, for lack of space, is
omitted from Fig.6.
The vibratory movement to the aforesaid lever 42 is accomplished through the provi sion of a third M11142 to the lever to carry a stud, indicated by 44, which tracks in a cam r power belt 51 and pulley 5.2 indicated y ting the free ends of the lap-plates to be swung, slightly outwardly in opposition to springs 15 (Fig. 1) to accommodate the in equalities in the lengths of boxes, difie'r'ences in thickness of the cover paper and also afiord pressure against the cover laps, as D when the lap-plates traverse such laps to etlect past ing the same to underlying parts otthe wrapper orcoverpaper. 1
All of the parts above referred to are old in box wrapping machines and their functions and manner of operating well understood.
According to the present invention, I provide means, actuated by movements of the wing bars 10 to. regulate the box, whereby the .side portions D of the paper covering D are brought against the respectivebox side Wall elements S. and the latter, in turn, against the block 5, thus positioning the lap extensions D of the respective side-wrapper portions so that the lap-plates 13 will efiect the turning of the lap extensions D about the respective corners of a box and against the cover end-flaps D. for pasting the laps D thereto while the box ends E are being brought by the travel of the lap-plates against the block form .5.
As shown in the drawing, my invention comprisesa plurality of regulating or presser members, one for each corner ofa box, each of said members consisting-of a horizontal rod element 16 disposed in the direc tion of the travel of the associated wing bar 10, that is, at right angles to the side surfacesof the form-block 5,the rod extendingthrough guide ways providedin flange elements 1.7 of an attachment 18 of the respective holder 12.
Towarl said form-block the rod 16 is bent at 19 upwardly as'an arm 20. The outer end at the rod element 16 of each presser member is connected to a spring 21 whose other end, as shown in Fig. 1, is connected-t0 a flange element 17 of the respective attachment.
' Thusarranged, a spring 21 serves to yield ably retain the associated member in its innermost position aslimited by a set-collar 22 provide, upon the rodelement 16 of the re,-v spective member. I 1

.5,and that paste en applied to themargins of the flaps D D and also to the laps l) and that the assembly of the above named parts is positioned in the machine with the box bottom and the central portion of the wrapper engaged between the blocks 5 and 7 of the machine.
' Thus arranged, when said blocks descend with the work, the rolls (not shown) of the machine act in a known manner to press the wrapper flaps D and D about the fi-ange portions of the extension bottom B and-against the side and end wall elements S and E and pushing them against the respective side and end surfaces of the form block 5.
The side and end walls of the box and the flaps pasted thereto are thus brought into substantially the relation with respectto the formblock in which they are shown in Fig. 1 with regard to theside walls-S and the associated flaps D ozt the wrapper. The wing bars lO'then move toward the block 5 causing the respective lap-plates Bend the regulators16i20 to advance, to again push the sidewalls S against the respective sides of the block as'represented in Fig. 2 with respect to one side of a box.
Continued advance movements of the wing bars 10 carry the lap-plates 18 therewith to swing each of the laps D? from; a position such as indicated inFig. 2 to that which it is indicated in Fig. 3with respect to one corner; meanwhile the, regulators are holding the. box sides firmly against the form block and the lap plates have traversed the respective laps to. efitect the pasting of the same to the wrapper flaps D at the ends of the box, whereby, thewrapper itself serves to hold the box in shape without the use of cornerstays .orother fasteningmeans- It is v to be noted that the springs 21 yield-ably hold the regulators in positions to pertormtheir duty ofholding the box side walls firmly against the form block whilethe lapeplates 13 are. accomplishing the securement of the wrapper, incondition-t0 hold the box in shape. y Y
