My invention relates to a portable light supporting structure of the adjustable type, and particularly to a structure arranged for use is a garage lamp.
An object of the invention is to provide a lamp of the class described having the parts thereof arranged for a maximum of adjustment.
Another object of the invention is to pro-. vide in a device of the character described a novel and particularly eflicient adjustable mounting of a swing-arm bracket forming a part of the device.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and inwhich, Figure l is an elevation of the complete structure.
Figure 2 is a generally diagrammatic plan View at a reduced scale and having indicated thereon different possible adjustments of the device.
Figure 3 is an elevation illustrating the positioning of the parts for casting light on the under surface of an overhanging.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 4-4 in Figure 1, the view being drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a side View of a portion of the structure of Figs. 4 and 5.
As herewith particularly shown, the device of my invention comprises a weighted base member 7 having a cylindrical stem or standard 8 extending upwardly therefrom and on V which is mounted a swing-arm bracket 9 carrying an electric light socket 11 at the outer extremity thereof. The socket 11 is preferably arranged for a maximum of adjustment with respect to the bracket end which carries it, and as here shown is carried at an extremity of a rod 12 longitudinally and rotatably adjustable in a member 13. The member 13, it will be noted is carried at the end of an upwardly extending post or strut 14 swivelled to the arm 9 and is arranged to permit the angular adjustment of rod 12 about an axis perpendicular to In this manner, the rod is arranged to be ad'- j ust'a-bly set to dispose the light in any desired relation to the extremity of arm 9 within the limits imposed by the length of the rod 12, it being noted'that the particular means herewith disclosed in mounting the lamp fixture on the arm 9 is the subject matter of my United States Patent No. 1,714,003, dated May 21, 1929. i j r I The arm 9, it will now be noted, is forked at its inner end to provide generally parallel spaced portions 16 and 17 having their opposed face portions 18 and 19 respectively parallelly related. The portions'16 and 17 are provided with axially aligned perforations 29 and. 30 havingtheir'axial line perpendicular to the surfaces 18and'19 of the portions,and such perforations are of a size to rotatably receive the standard. 8. It will now be obvious thatunder static conditions, the" weight of'the arm and lamp portionsupported thereby would, When the bracket is mounted on the standard, tend to hold the arm in setposition on the standard whenthe latter is erect by reason of the lateral bearing of the spaced arm portions against the standard. But since, in a lamp of the class described, a swinging of the arm about the standard is frequently desirable, and such swinging Would tend to effect asimultaneous downward movement of thearm along the stand ard, means are provided for'positively holding the arm at an adjusted height on the standard and at the same time permitting its swinging therearound. In the present embodiment of the invention, the fixing of the bracket arm 9 at a desired adjusted position along the standard 8 is arranged to beeffected by means of a collar member 21 arranged to be disposed about the standard between the arm portions 16 and 17 and to be releasably fixed to the standard by means of a set screw 22 extending through the member 21 and arranged to be projected against the standard for locking the member 21 thereto. As here shown, the set screw 22 is provided. at its outer end with a winged head 23 for facilitating the manipulation thereof; Preferably, means are provided in that of the post 14.

Accordingly, the member 21 is provided at one end thereof with a radially extending flange 24 and is encircled at the other end by a ring member 25 having substantially the same outer diameter as the flange 24:. Operatively interposed between the flange 24 and ring 25 to encircle the intermediate port-ion of the member 21 is a comcling said standard between said arm portions, means operative to simultaneously and resiliently engage each of said members with a different one of said portions, and cooperating means on said members engageable to prevent a relative rotation thereof.

arranged to react between the flange and ring to resiliently and frictionally engage the flange end of the member 21 and such ring against the surfaces 18 and 19 respectively of the arm. In this manner, a frictional holding of the arm in set position is provided, yet the arm may be swung to a new position without involving any manipulation of set screws or the like.
Preferably, rotation of the ring 25 about the member 21 is arranged to be prevented by 1 means of the engagement of an outwardly extending key 31 formed integral with the member 21 in an axially directed key slot 27 pro vided in the ring, whereby the surface 18 slidably and frictionally engages the top surface of the ring, and the latter is held in fixed engaged relation with the spring. A guard for the spring is preferablyprovided, such guard being here shown in the form of a cylindrical shell 28 arranged tovrest directly on the surface 19 outwardly of the flange 24.
