Description
C. H. PRESCOTT.
MACHINE FUR FOLDING COTTON BATTING 0R WADDIN G. No.175.255.
Patented March 28,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
CHARLES H. PRESCOTT, OF WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR FOLDING COTTON BATTING 0R WADDING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,255, dated March 28, 1876 application filed January 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. PRESCOTT, of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Machine for Folding Ootton Batting 0r VVadding, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to produce a machine for folding cotton batting or waddin g, as it comes from the carding-machine, so as to compress it into a narrower width, for convenience of packing and transportation; and the invention consists in the employment of a funnel-shaped chute, composed of sheet metal or other suitable material, having a smooth surface, and constructed in such a manner as to receive at its upper end a sheet of cotton batting or wadding, of the Width as it comes from the cards, and fold the same at the lower end of the said chute, by passing between the two curved lower sides of the same, so as to cause the sides or edges of the cotton batting or wadding to lap over and meet in the center, and thus doubling its thickness. The said chute is mounted .in a suitable frame, provided with endless conveying-belts and pressure-rollers.
My invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in whi'ch Figure 1 represents the sh eet-metal foldingchute, and Fig. 2 the machine embodying my invention.
a 0/ represent the frame, which may be of any su"able size or dimension. The rear portion of the frame a a forms an incline, and is provided with rollersdd, which support an endless apron that serves to carry the batting or wadding to the folding-chute b. The chute b is made of sheet metal, in the general form shown in Fig. 1, having its lower corners c 0 turned .over and adjusted in such a manner in relation to the width of the batting or wadding, as it comes from the cards, as to cause the edgr s of the batting to fold over and meet in the center, and thus double the thickness of the batting or waddin g, as shown at f f, in Fig. 2. Beneath the lower end of the chute b is arranged an endless apron, h, which serves to carry the folded batting between the pressure-rollers g g and off the machine. The pressure-rollers g g are arranged a short distance from the lower end of the chute b, and serve to compress the folded cotton batting or wadding as it passes from the chute. By this means the cotton batting or wadding is put in a convenient form for packing and transportation. When it is desirable to have the cotton batting or wadding for use thinner than in its folded condition, the edges may very readily be turned back so as to assume its original width and thickness.
In operation the cotton-batting e, as it comes from the cards, is placed on the endless apron, k, by which it is carried up the inclined portion a a of the frame to the chute 12. Descending the chute, the edges of the batting or wadding e are turned over, the curved portions 0 c, the outer edges meeting at the center, and thus doubling the thickness of the wadding, while reducing its width one-half. The folded batting or wadding ff is then carried, by means of the endless apron h, between the pressure rollers g g, by which it is rendered sufficiently compact for packing and transportation, as well as for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A machine for folding cotton batting or wadding, consisting of the frame a a, the chute b, constructed as described, the endless belts k and h, and pressure-rollers g 9, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specifiation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. PRESCOTT.
