Description

March 25, 1930. R. PAULSEN 1,751,756
TANK SHIP Filed Jan. 20, 1928 Patented Mar. 25, 1930 I REGINALD PAULSEN, OF OSLO, NORWAY TANK SHIP Application filed January 20, 1928, Serial N 0. 248,187, and in Norway February 3, 1927.
This invention concerns improvements in tank ships of the two-deck type andis characterized by the vessel having an expansion trunk or upward extension of the main tankspace projecting from the second deck through the main deck to an appropriate level above the latter. In tank-ships of the two deck type as known hitherto the said trunk extended up to the main deck only.
The arrangement according to the present invention results in various advantages among which may be mentioned the greater volumetric capacity and depth which are obtained without anyalteration of the dimensions of the vessel. Furthermore'the extension of the expansion trunk through the main deck enhances the rigidity of the vessel, increasing its strength both longitudinally and transversely. A further advantage is that 2 the vessel can be charged up to the loading line without regard being paid to whether heavy oil, petroleum or light benzine is being loaded. On account of the increased depth and cubic capacity the costs of construction per ton dead weight are less than those of tank-ships hitherto known ofthe same tonstability alters but little when different oils are transported, this leading in turn to a re- Referring to the drawing the reference nu-' meral 1 indicates the shell of the vessel, 2 the main deck, 3 the second deck, 4 the amidship partition and 5 the usual summer tanks. The
expansion trunk 6 extends up to its top-7 and communicates with the main tank spaces 8, 9. The walls ofthe expansion trunk extending longitudinally of the vessel are indicated by the reference numeral 10. o The extra rigidity imparted by the arrangemaln dimensions.
ment of the trunk according to the invention enables the dimensions of the vessel and the dimensions of the material employed in its construction to be reduced, other economic advantages, or improvements of existing advantages, being thereby attained. It is also to be noted that the working expenses for redemption andassurances-are re- The details of the vessel and of its construction may be selected as desired and may be modified to conform with particular conditions which may be encountered in any'individualcase. nage. Finally it may be mentioned that the Claims: V
1. A tank ship comprising a shell, a main deck, a second deck, an expansion trunk extending from the second deck up through and to a point above the main deck and having walls extending longitudinally of the vessel and spaced from the sides thereof and a lon-' gitudinal midship partition extending from the bottom of the shell or keel to the top or deck of the expansion trunk, said expansion trunk communicating with main tank spaces below the second deck and at opposite sides of the ship. 2. A tank ship comprising a shell, a main 35 deck, a second deck, an expansion trunk'extending from the second deck up through and to a point above the main deck and having walls extending longitudinally of the vessel and spaced from the sides thereof and a 90 longitudinal Inidship partition extending from the bottom of the shell or keel to the top or deck of the expansion trunk, said expansion trunk communicating with main tank 5 spaces below the second deck and at opposite sides of the ship and summer tanks at opposite sides of the expansion trunk and between v the main and second decks.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature.
