' wardly extending rods in various positions by means of struts hinged to the vertical portions and slidably connected with the rods,

the parts being releasably held in positions of adjustment by various devices which have been found inconvenient, since the manipulating of the adjusting means requires an operator to reach out of a window at more than arms length.

It is an object of this invention to provide a clothes drying apparatus equipped with adjusting means which are simpler and more easily manipulated than heretofore has been the case with apparatus of this type.

A further object is to provide a clothes drying apparatus comprising relatively few parts, and adapted to be conveniently folded to an out-of-the-way position when not in use.

These and other objects will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing which form a material part of this disclosure, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the appa ratus folded to an out-of-the'way position.

Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 22 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the position of parts of the apparatus to facilitate the hanging of clothes thereon.

Figure 4 is a sectional, sideelevational View of the apparatus in extended position.

Referring to the drawings, the clothes drying apparatus is shown to comprise a pair 1928; Serial No. 259,450.

Pivoted to each bar at8 is a sheet metal bar 9, the pair of bars 9 being appropriately spaced by the rods 10 fixed tothe 'o'uter ends o'f bars 9. In operation, bolt 18 is positioned in notch 24, the block 14 being pressed downward to hold it in that position, and the apparatus appears as shown in Figure 8. In this position clothes are attached to the outer ropes.

The block 1% is then pressed upward to release the latch, and bolt 18 is allowed to engage notch 23 to facilitate the attaching of clothes to the inner ropes. After the clothes have been hung upon the ropes of the apparatus, the latch is released to allow bolt 18 to engage notch 22, and block 14 is pressed downward to securely hold bar 9 in a horizontal position as shown in Figure 4;.

After the clothes have been dried, the operations are reversed, and the apparatus may be held in an out-of-the-way position by allowing pin' 18 to engage notch 25. (See Figure 1). I 7

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a clothes drying ap paratus which may be more easily manipulated than heretofore has been the case with similar apparatus. 7 i

Having described my invention what I claim as new anddesire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a clothes drying apparatus having an outwardly extending bar and a strut adapted'to support said bar'in various positions of adjustment, a latching device comprising a block having a groove through which thestrut is slidable, a disc engaging groove through which the strut isslidable,
