UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FREDERICK A. JONES AND GEORGE W. KLAUCKE, 0F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS,
ASSIGNORS TO HOBBS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHU- SETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS BOX-FORM ATTACHMENT FOR COVERING MACHINES Application filed May 18,
This invention relates to an attachment for a box covering machine for holding the box, which is to be rotated, as the paper is applied to it.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide an improved universal adjustment for the box form attachment; to provide convenient means in two units for holding it in adjusted position and to provide this adjustment in such form that the transmission of power from the driving shaft of the machine to the box form attachment will be convenient and will not be detached in adjusting the device, so that the transmission of power can take place in all adjusted positions without any hand manipulation of that part of the device.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin drawings in which Tig. 1 is a side view of the end of a box covering machine showing a preferred form of this invention applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the attachment.
The invention is shown as applied to a box covering machine 10, which is provided with the usual standards 11 having means, not shown, for guidin the covering paper to a position for applying it to the boxes. It is also provided with cutter 12 which may operate in the usual way. The paper is drawn throu h as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to t e box, which is located on the attachment.
The machine is provided with a driving shaft 13 which is extended out through the side through a bushing 14 and is provided with a bevel gear 15 on the end for driving the device. Mounted on the side of the frame, concentric with the shaft 13 and adapted to rotate about it, is a hollow arm 16 in the form of an elbow. This arm is swiveled on the shaft 13 and is held upon it by a nut 17 It has a cover 18 which completes the elbow and furnishes a space within for the reception of the gear 15.
A gear 19 meshes with the gear 15 and is located on a shaft 20 extending along the 1928. Serial No. 278,899.
center of the arm 16. This'shaft also is bearings for a cross shaft 24 on which is mounted the form head 25 which is shown as formed in the usual manner. The shafts 24 and 21 are connected by bevel gears 26. The shaft 24 is provided with a cylindrical rack 27 on the end, which is connected at any de-v sired point for adjustment by the usualform of spindle plunger 28, which is operated by a spring pressed lever 29 in the usual way.
It will be seen that this whole attachment comprising the arm 16 and sliding hollow sleeve 22 can be turned about the center of the shaft 13 as indicated in full and dotted lines in Fig. 1 and held in position by a segment 30, which is on the arm 16 and a pivot stud 31 to hold it at any desired angle.
It will also be seen that the sliding arm 22 can be moved in and out readily by merely exerting force on it in'a longitudinal direction and clamped by the clamping knob 23. The manipulation is made in practical ly one motion because the operator can grasp the parts at the end and move them in or out and around the center at the same time, with one hand, just as'if there Were only one adjustment, but it has to be clamped in two places. I
The operation of covering the box is the same as for this class of machines in general.
Although we have illustrated and described only one form of the invention we are aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the inven tion as expressed in the claims.
Therefore we do not wish to be limited in these respects but what we do claim is 1. In a box covering machine, the combination of an arm pivotally mounted on the machine, a telescoping arm slidably connected therewith and means on the second arm for supporting 'a box form head thereon, with a telescoping shaft, means for rotating the telescoping shaft and a spindle carried by the telescoping arm for rotating said head which is geared to the telescoping shaft.
2. In a box covering machine, the combination with a power shaft, a hollow arm pivotally mounted to swing about said shaft, and a telescoping arm slidably connected therewith and means on the second arm for supporting a box form head thereon, of a telescoping shaft in two parts, one carried by each of said arms geared to the driving shaft and a spindle carried by the second arm for rotating said head geared to the second shaft, whereby the telescoping arm can be shortened and lengthened and can be swung about the driving shaft as a center and in all positions will transmit power to the spindle.
3. In a box covering machine, the combination with a power shaft supported by the machine, of a hollow telescoping arm pivotally mounted at one end on the end of said shaft to swing about the same, the outer end of said telescoping arm having bearings, a spindle at right angles to the arm supported in said bearings for carrying the box form head and a telescoping shaft in the arm geared to the power shaft at one end and to the spindle at the other for transmitting power to the spindle, of a clamping knob carried by the inner part of the telescoping arm for clamping the two parts of the arm together in adjusted position and a clamp on the pivoted end of the arm for clamping the arm in any angular position.
4. In a box covering machine, the combinationwith a telescoping arm pivotally mounted, the outer end of said telescoping arm having bearings, a spindle at right angles to the arm supported in said bearings for carrying the box form head, and a telescoping shaft carried by the arm geared to the power shaft at one end and to the spindle at the other for transmitting power to the spindle, of a clamping knob carried by the inner part of the telescoping arm for clamping the parts of the arm together in adjusted position and a segment clamp on the pivoted end of the arm for clamping the arm in any angular position, whereby when the knob and clamp v are loosened the boX form head can be moved to any desired position by a single motion and the parts can be' clamped in adjusted position by the two independent clamping means.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures.
FREDERICK A. JONES. GEORGE W. KLAUCKE.
