IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES.

' State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Match-Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact descriptionot' the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1' and. 2 arerespectively a vertical section and front elevation of my improved match-safe. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections of modifications of my invention.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient receptacle for the stubs or burnt ends of matches. After the match has been used the disposal of the burnt end'is always a source of more or less trouble. It either has to be thrown on the floor, producing in consequence a' litter and an unsightly appearance, or it has to be thrown into the stove or carried out of the room, either of which involves more trouble than the insignificance of the objectjustifies.

My inventionv consists in the peculiar construction of a match-safe, having a dividingpartition, with the sides of the outer casing extending down so as to form two compartments in one and the same containing-caseone for the matches, which is provided with a lid, and the other for the stubs or burnt ends, the said stub-receptacle having an opening-through which the stubs are inserted, and a sliding door through which they are removed.

In the drawing, A represents the outer containing-case, which may be of any shape and material. This-case is provided with a partition forming an upper receptacle, B, for the matches, and a lower receptacle, 0, fo'r the burnt ends of the same. The match-recepta cle isprovided with a hinged lid, D, by

means of which the matches may be introducedor removed, and the receptacle for the stubs .opens in the form of a slot, at. As shown in Fig. 1, the sides I) of the outer case are extended below the match-receptacle with curved edges provided with guides. In these guideways moves the curved slide 0, which constitutes the front and bottom of the stubreceptacle.

With this construction the slot at for the introduction of the stubs is in front, and the accumulations are removed at the bottom by moving the slide 0 upward in the guideways.

As a modification of my invention, I may make the opening or slot for the introduction of the burnt ends in the rear of the lid to the match-safe, as in Fig. 3, and provide the receptacle for the stubs with a bottom 'slide, d, for the removal of the accumulations.

So far as at present described the safes are adapted to be hung against a wall or perpendicular surface. For use upon the mantelpiece, tables, stands, 860., they will be made as in Fig. 51, in which the slot at is in front of the lid, and the safe is made with abroad slide, d, at the bottom, which constitutes the supporting-base of the safe, and is detachable to allow the removal of the contents of the lower receptacle.

I am aware of the fact that it is not broadly new to provide a match-safe with areceptacle to receive the stubs, and I accordingly limit my invention to my two compartment safe, having one and the same containing-case, as hereinafter claimed.

'What I claim is 1. A match-safe, constructed with extended sides and a dividing-partitionto form two compartments in one and the same containing-case-one of which compartments is provided with a hinged cover and the other with an open slit and a sliding door, substantially as described.

2. The match-safe A, consisting of the receptacle B, having lower extended curved sides b, provided with guideways upon their edges, in combination with a curved slide, 0, moving in the guideways and forming at once the bottom and front of the receptacle for the stubs, substantially as described.
