Description

March 11, 1930. A. sAMuELs MACHINE FOR DRYING SHEET MATERIAL Filed Nov. 2'. 1928 NVEN R m Patented Mar. 11, 1930 PATENT OFFICE ANDRE SAMUELS, OF LYON, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO SAM- UELS PROCESS CORPORATION, OF BOSTON, MASSAGEEEUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS MACHINE FOR DRYING MATERIAL Application filed November 2, 1928.
This invention relates to a machine for drying sheet material, such as fabric (textile or felted), paper or the like which has, for example, been printed or placed upon a table and glued thereon.
The drying of dressed or other fabrics, for example, has been ordinarily effected by means of a movable framework carrying a fire of wood, charcoal, gas or the like, or the fire is fixed and the fabric is movable. In both cases the fire is arranged below the fabric to be dried. In recent years there has also been devised an electrical apparatus embodying reflectors with heating units therein which reflectors have been carried along and over a printing table as is shown in the U. S. patent to Lculier No. 1,571,282.
The device of this invention depends for its operation upon applying to the sheet material a current of heated air as distinguished from simply radiated heat, as is the case with the apparatus shown in the L- culier patent.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred type of machine in place upon a printing table;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical half end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus in its essentials consists of a carriage A running on a track 2, and carrying an air heat ing drum R which provides heated air for a blower B operated by an electric motor M The air heating unit B may warm the air, for example, by means of gas, gasoline or other combustible, though in this particular device it is accomplished by means of electric resistance units 5 which heat the air. supply for the blower. The flow of air is indicated by the arrows f. The air first enters through the apertures 0 adjacent the heating units 5 and the heated air is drawn from the air heating drum R axially of and, towards the blower B and thence clownwardly and towards the table 3 upon which the fabric is placed. The quantity of air projected from the blower is controlled by. means of a variable shutter device is, Z, m
registering with the apertures e, e, e, which Serial No. 316,782.
damper is controlled by means of the rack m and pinion P connected to and controlled by the handle P as shown in the drawing. The above described portions of the apparatus are suitably held in the carriage A mounted on rollers A so that it may be moved along the sides of the printing table. This drive may be effected, for example, by means of an electric motor M driving,- through speed reducing gears (not shown) and the shaft 6, the gears 8 which mesh with racks 10 on the opposite sides of the table as shown in Fig. 2, the speed of advance of the machine being controlled by means of the rheostat 7". Thus, in order to dry a given strip of fabric which has been freshly printed or which may have been fastened to the table by means of a liquid adhesive, the heating resistances 5 in the air heating unit R are turned on so as to heat the air and the machine is then started in motion along the table so that heated air is blown down upon the same through the funnel E and shutter, as above described. The current for the motors and resistance units may be supplied through conductors 4 along which ride the contact brushes I.
Having described my invention, what I wish to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. In an apparatus for drying sheet material comprising a movable frame adapted to be moved along a printing table, an air heating unit including a casing, a blower and means for driving the said blower, and a con duit extending from said casing, about said blower to a point of proximity to said table, and a damper between said blower and said table.
2. In an apparatus for drying sheet material upon a printing table a carriage adapted to be moved along said table, an air heating unit and blower attached to said carriage, means to drive said blower, means encasing said unit and blower to conduct heated air downwardly and upon the material to be dried, and valve means controlling said air conducting means.
3. I11 an apparatus for drying sheet material upon aprinting table a carriage adapted to be moved along said table, an electric air heating unit and blower attached to said carriage, means to drive said blower, means encasmg said unit and blower to conduct heated air downwardly and upon the material to be dried, and valve means controlling said air conducting means.
4.
