BED DAVENPORT Filed Aug. 20. 1928 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor $5 Fin a7 Lazy Attarnqy Patented Mar. 4, 1930 UNITED STATES EMIL LEVY, OF LIMA, OHIO BED DAVENPORT Application filed August 20, 1928.
The present invention relates to a bed davenport, and has for its prime object to provide a structure wherein the bed davenport when folded will have the appearance of an ordinary standard davenport, but may be extended into a bed davenport having a standard length, and the structure is so designed as to allow the use of regulation size cushions.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a bed davenport of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and thoroughly eflicient and reliable.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrange- 2 ment of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the davenport embodying features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the cushions removed.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the bed extended, and
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation showing the means for holding the arm extensions to the arms.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes the back of the davenport, and numeral 6 the sides and arms thereof. The numeral 7 denotes the bed portion of the davenport which is foldable in the usual well known manner. The numeral 8 denotes the removable cushion; Thus far all parts described are standard and well known in the art. My invention consists in the provision of extension cushion blocks 9 for the arms of the sides 6, so that the davenport may be made longer than the conventional davenport, and yet use the standard size cushions 8. The cushion arm extensions 9 Serial No. 300,931.
therefore function as fillers and may be provided with lugs 10 to be received in recesses 11 in the side arms 6, so as to prevent displacement. Other suitable means may be used, if desired. r
Thus, it will be seen that this bed davenport, under present practice, is to have standard cushions and at the same time, may be converted into a bed with a regulation size bed davenport springwhich is usually about six feet long and four feet wide and the six feet running length of davenport. The side cushions on davenports are about twenty-one inches each, totaling sixty-three inches, while the spring is usually seventy-two inches. By removing the parts 9, this enables the bed davenport spring to be opened out into a bed, and when closed, these parts give the appearance of an ordinary bed davenport, allowing the use of standard cushions.
The advantage of this structure is the six feet long bed and the davenport well proportioned to other furniture, and when used as a davenport cannot be told from the standard davenport.
It is thought that the construction, utility, and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art, without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail, merely for the purpose of exemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a bed daven ort, a back, sides, having rigid arms, a fol ing spring structure normally'confined between said sides below the arms, removable filler blocks normally overlying the folding spring structure at the ends thereof, removable cushions normally disposed on the folding spring structure between the filler blocks, and means for rigidly connecting the filler blocks with the arms to normally hold the folding spring structure in position positively ment. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
' EMIL LEVY.
