This invention relates to vanity cases, and has for its principal object and purpose to provide in a case of the type having a body section to contain the cosmetics and a top or cover therefor, improved means for ap plying or attaching an image reflecting plate to the cover and hingedly connecting said cover with one wall of the body section.

More particularly, in one practical embodiment of the invention, I propose to provide a cover for the case having a plate faced with leather or other suitable ornamental covering material, together with a reflecting mirror plate superimposed on said cover plate and upon the inwardly turned edges of the ornamental material covering one side of said plate, and means for securely fastening the mirror plateincluding a projecting tongue struck from the cover plate and constituting an element of the latching means whereby the cover is secured in its closed position. Said attaching means for the mirror plate also preferably includes spaced knuckles formed on one end of said plate and connected with a similar knuckle on one end wall of the body section of the case by means of a suitable pintle forming the hinge con-- nection between the cover and the case body.

It is a further general ob ect of the mvention to simplify and improve the construction of vanity cases in the manner above characterized whereby the several parts thereof can 1% easily and quickly assembled and quantity production of such articles materially expedited. 7

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved vanity case and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims. a

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body section of the case which may be of-any suitable dimensions and in its essentials includes a side plate or wall 6 and an angular frame 7 suitably secured to one side of said plate with its several walls disposed in inwardly spaced relation from the opposite sides and one end edge of the plate 6. Preferabl the outer surface of the plate 6 is covered y a'sheet of imitation leather or other suitable flexible material indicated at 8, the edges of which are turned inwardly around the plate 6 and are interposed 'between the opposite face of said plate and the inwardly projecting flanges of the frame 5 which is of angular form in cross section. The particular means for rigidly securing the frame 7 in attached relation to the frame 6' is not an essential feature of this application, and it will suflice to state that this means securely holds said frame in clamping engagement upon the in-turned edges of the covering material 8. Within the space bounded by the walls of the frame 7, suitable receptacles for rouge, powder and a lip stick, or

other cosmetics are adapted to be contained.

In one end wall of the case 7 a push buttonindicated at 9 is suitably mounted for the operation of a resiliently yieldable latch element 10. ,The opposite-end wall of the frame 7 is provided upon its upper edge and con-- trally thereof with a hinge knuckle indicated at 11. v

The covering material 8 is extended around the latter end wall of the case body externallythereof andover the outer face of a cover plate 12. To the inner side of this cover plate a mirror plate 13 is securely attached and' superimposed upon the edges of the ornamentalcovering material which are turned inwardly around the edges of the plate 12. plate may, if desired, be suitably ornamented, as for instance, by engraving or impressing therein the waved line indicated at 14in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

In stamping out the cover plate 12, a T- shaped part is centrally cut from the plate adjacent one end thereof as shown at 15 in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the narrower portion of said part 15 remaining integrllly 1s tongue is then struck or' punched laterally from the plane of the plate and formed to provide a latch tongue 16. The spaced shoulers 17 at the juncture of the wide and nar- 20 row portions of this tongue are thus spaced laterally from the face of the plate 12.

One end edge of the mirror plate 13 is centrally provided with a rectangular notch or recess 18. At its opposite end edge and 5 contiguous to each side edge thereof, the plate 13 is formed with the hinge knuckles 19.

In applying -and attaching the plate 13 to the plate 12, after the edges of the covering material'8have been turned inwardly around the edges of the latter plate, the mirror plate 13 is then placed in position, the narrow-neck portion of the latch tongue 15 being received in the notch or recess 18, and 'said mirror plate at the opposite edges of said recess being interlocked with the plate 12, between the pintle or rod 21 is then inserted through- 'these aligned hinge knuckles and sleeve whereby the cover is hingedly connected with the endwall of the case body. In thismanner, it will be seen that the mirror plate may be quickly and securely attached to the cover of the case without necessitating the use of rivets, welded connections or other additional fastening or attaching means. The edges of the covering material 8 are thus also clampingly held and securely fixed between the two plates without the use of additional securing means.

-When the case cover is moved to its closed position over the open side of the case body and in parallel relation therewith, the free end of the tongue 16 cooperates with theresilient latch element 10 whereby said cover is securely retained in the closed position until released by pressure on the button 9.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and several advantages of my improved vanity case as above detion to the cover plate by the hinge pintle and the projecting latch tongue on the latter plate, the manufacturing cost of articles of 'this character may be appreciably lowered and production thereof on-a large scale greatly expedited. Also the device is of greater durability, since the mirror plate 13 will notbe broken by dropping the case or rough handling thereof, while at the same time it will retain its highly reflecting surface indefinitely. Of course, it is apparent that a case of this novel construction might be made in manyother sizes and shapes than that which I have'selected for purposes of illustration. Accordingly, it will be understood that in theserespects as well as in the other structural details above referred t the device might be produced in various otner alterna-v tive structural forms, and I therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly embodied within the spirit andscope of appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a case or container, a body section and a cover hingedly connected with one end of said body section including a cover plate, a mirror plate superimposed on one side of. said cover plate, an ornamental covering material extending over the opposite side of said cover plate and having its edges inwardly turned and interposed between said cover plate and the mirror plate, and said plates having integral coacting parts to clampingly secure the covering material therebetween and retain said plates in attached relation to each other.

2. In a case or container, a body section having an end wall provided with a hinge knuckle, a cover for said body section including a cover plate, a continuous sheet of flexible'material covering one side of the body sectionand extending over one side of said cover plate and having its edge portions inwardly turned upon the opposite side of said cover plate, a mirror plate superimposed upon the latter side of the cover plate and upon the inturned edges of said covering material, said mirror plate having s aced hinge knuckles on one end thereof, a hmge pintle connecting said knuckles with the hinge knuckle on the body wall of the case, said cover plate having a latch tongue struck therefrom atthe opposite end of said mirror plate and the mirror the plate being provided with means for the cooperative engagement of said latch tongue therewith whereby said plates are securely held in attached relation to each other and having cover latching means, a cover hingedly connected with one wall of said body section and including the cover plate, a mirror plateon the inner side of said cover plate,- means carried by the cover plate and enga'g-- ing the mirror plate to secure said plates in permanently assembled relation to each other, and said securing means including a part adapted to coact with said cover latching means to retain the cover in its closed position on the case body.
