G. D. ADAMS ET AL RECORD4 APPARATUS Filed Nov. l, 1928 Patented Feb. 245, 1930 UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE D. ADAMS AND JAMES W. DUNIGAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS vRECGRD APPARATUS epplieauen mea November 1, 192s. serial Ne. 316,446.
` The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide a record apparatus for the use of merchants and others desiring to keep a record of the transactions oftheir individual customers enabling rapid determination of the transactions or lack of transactions relating to particular items.
Second, to provide an apparatus of this character in which the record may be kept with comparatively little effort and transaction records made by several persons without likelihood of confusion.
Third, to provide an apparatus of .'this chtracter which is very simplexand economi- Objects pertaining to details and economies of our invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
,A record apparatus embodyingy the features of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is aperspective view of a simple and l practical embodiment of our improvements as We have embodied the same in a box-like le or container.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2, vparts being shown in fulllines for convenience in illustration.
y Fig 4 is a transverse section corresponding to that of Fig. 2 with one of the covers or closures open'ed and a series of the cards or sheets raised for inspection. l
Fig. 5 is a. fragmentary end elevation with a portion of the sheets separated-for inspection. l
Inthe embodiment illustrated we provide a le box or container 1 having covers or closures 2 disposed on opposite sides so that the le box may be inverted andl either cover opened, the other cover then constituting a bottom. The covers are hinged at 3 sothat when open the interior of the box is fully exposed. Hooks 4 are provided for retaining the covers in closed position. The end walls are cut away at their top and bottom edges o`r at their cover edges to form or they may be made by a person designated recesses 5 extending for their entire width and also have alined holes 6 disposed between the.recesses. We provide a plurality of record cards or sheets 7 which have alined slots 8 therein adapted to receive the rod 9 in- 55 serted through the holes 6 in the end walls of the le box so that the sheets are retained in the box, while permitting limited vertical movement thereof.
The sheets 7 are provided'with columns 10 60 of indicia adjacent opposite edges, the indicia in the embodiment illustrated indicating departments of a department store, as Coats, Hats, Hose, Mens furnishings, etc. Between the columns is a ruled blank space 11 and at the top of this space the card has spaces designed to receive the name and address of the customer. as clearly shown in the drawing. One sheet is assigned to each customer. i 70 The sheets are provided 'with a series of indicia perforations l2, corresponding perforations of the several sheets being alined.l The indicia perforations are located between the indicia and the adjacent edge of the sheet so that'portions of the sheet lbetween the indicia perforations and the edge of the sheet may be cut out, forming slots 13 which are alined with or register with the corresponding uncut perforations, so that by inserting a separating rod 14 through the indicia perforations of the Hats for instance, all 'of the sheets whose II ats-7 indicia are uncut are separated and the sheets may be manipulated along onthe rod as indicated in Fig. 3 to permit inspection of the individual sheets.
This enables therapid ,inspection of the list of customers who have not made purchases, for instance, in the hat department during the period for which the 'set of sheets may have been employed, ,and those who have n iade transactions in a particular department may be quickly determined. i
Our improved record apparatus is simpley and economical in structure and records may be made by several people Without confusion,
for the purpose from sales slips, 4for instance,
,65 may be separated from those whose correand infomation desired may be readily obtained from the cards.
We have illustrated and described our imp'rovcments in a very simple though practical embodiment. If desired the sheets may be arranged in a filing cabinet or the like which may be readily adapted for the purpose. We have not attempted to illustrate and describe this and various other adaptations which we contemplate as we believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt our improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention whatl we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A record apparatus comprising a ile box having oppositely disposed closures,` either of which may be positioned at the top and opened, the end walls of the box each having transversely extending recesses in their edges adjacent said closures and a hole disposed between said recesses, a series of record sheets having retaining slots alined with said holes in said end walls and columns of in- .dicia adjacent to but spaced from opposite I edges thereof, and alined series of indicia perforations disposed between the individual indicia and the adjacent edges of the sheets so that portions of the sheets between selected indicia perforations and the edges of the sheet may be cut away providing open slots alined with the uncut indicia perforations, a retaining rod arranged through said holes in the ends of said file box engaging said detaining slots'in said sheet permitting limited movement of the sheets within the iile box,
and a separating rod adapted to be manipu- A lated through said recesses in the end walls .of said [ile box and selectively inserted through alined indicia perforations and slots whereby sheets whose indicia perforations are intact may be separated from those whose corresponding indicia perforations have been cut.
2. A record apparatus comprising a file box having oppositely disposed closures,
l either of which may be positioned at the top and opened, the end walls of the box each having transversely extending recesses in their edges adjacent said closures, a series of record sheets having columns of indicia adjacent to but spaced from opposite edgesv sponding indicia perforations have been cut.
