BEDSPRING Filed Aug. 8. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR I BY j I ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 18, 1930 1 UNITED ,s'rarss JOHN BROWN GOODYVILL, OF TELKWA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA snnsrmne Application filed August 8, 1928. Serial No. 298,374.
1 This invention relates to improvements in bed spring bottoms, an object of the invention being to provide a knock down frame for the same, so that the bottom may be compactly arranged for shipment or storage,
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of a bed spring.
bottom constructed in accordance with the invention. I i Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary end view. Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4: is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 4-4 ofFigure'l.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55' of Figure 4.
Figures 6 and? are perspective views partly broken away showing the side rails of the knock down frame.
Figures 8 and 9 are detail perspective views ofthe cross bars of thegknock down frame.
A Figure 10 is a planview of the rollers with the spring bottom mounted thereon and shown in rolled condition.
I Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention comprises a knock down frame formed of side rails 10 and 11 and cross bars 12 and 13. The side rails may be formed of angle iron and are -14=-and 15. This last mentioned slotis provided with an offset portion 16 for a purpose which will be hereinafter apparent.
The cross bars 12 and 13 are provided with right-angled extensions 17 at their opposite provided near their opposite ends with slots ends and these extensions are reduced to provide tongues 18 and shoulders 19. The tongues are provided with inclined slots 20 which extend inwardly from their side edges and have'their inner ends spaced above the a;
shoulders 19 a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the side rails 10 and 11.
. The invention further includes rollers 20 and 21. These rollers are provided with annular transversely arranged grooves 22 G0 and 28, thegrooves 22 of the rollers 20 being provided with transversely rectangular bottoms'as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, so that the roller 20 may be received within the slots of the tongues 18 of the bar 12 and held therein against rotation. The roller 21 is mounted for rotation in the slots 20 of the cross bar 13.
A. wire mesh 24 is adapted to be stretched over the frame and for this purpose has one of its ends secured to the roller 20 and its other end to the roller 21 and is capable'of being wound upon or unwound from this roller. For this purpose, the roller 21 has secured thereon a ratchet wheel 25 which is adapted to be engaged by a spring influenced dog 26 which is mounted for pivotal movement upon one 'of the extensions 17 of the bar 13. The roller 21 is provided with a squared extension 27 for removable engage ment with a socketed crank arm 28 as shown by dotted lines'in Figure 2. I Y
By rotating the roller 21, the wire mesh 24 may be tensioned, the tensioning not only serving to stretch the mesh over the frame, but also to force the rollers 20 and 21 within the slots 20 and into engagement with the side rails 10 and 11, so as to hold the frame assembled. If desired, the rollers 20 and 21 may be slightly crowned so that the tension along the longitudinal center of the wire mesh will be slightly greater than that upon opposite sides of the center and sagging will thus be prevented.
The opposite ends of the wire mesh may be secured to the rollers by providing the rollers with a longitudinally disposed recess 29 within which is removably positioned a bar 30. The ends of the wire mesh are clamped 10o beneath the bar and the latter is held in position bymeans of screws 31.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention What is claimed is:
'1. In a bed spring bottom, a knock down a frame comprising side rails having openings adjacent each end, cross bars, rightangled,
extensions at each end of the cross bars removably positioned through the openings, inclined slots in said extensions, a roller mounted for rotation in the slots of one bar and adapted to bear upon the side rails to prevent separation of said bar and rails, a relatively stationary roller mounted in the slots of the other bar and preventing separation of said other bar and rails, a spring bottom having one end secured to the stationary roller and its other end wound upon therotatable roller, and means to rotate the last mentioned roller.
2. In a bed spring bottom, a knock down frame comprising side .rails having open ings adjacent each end, cross bars, rightangled extensions at each end of the cross bars for passage through the openings, rollers at opposite ends of the frame to engage the rightangled extensions, a spring bottom having its opposite ends mounted upon the rollers, means to tension the spring bottom,
and means to mount the rollers whereby tension of the spring bottom will prevent separation of the side rails and cross bars.
' 3. In a bed spring bottom, a knock-down frame comprising side rails and cross bars, extensions carried by the cross bars for removable engagement with the side rails, a spring bottom, a roller at each end of the spring bottom, means to mount one of the rollers for rotation in the extensions of one of the cross bars to hold said bar and side rails assembled, means to mount the other roller in the extensions of the other cross bar, whereby rotation of the first roller in one direction will force the rails and bars into contacting engagement, and-means to hold the rotatable roller against rotation in an opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. v 7
