Description

F. MERcIER Feb. 18, 1930.
LAMP
Filed Aug. 2, 1928 Attorneys Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UUNITEDY'STATES FRANK MERGIER,
PATENT OFFICE OF SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NAPOLEON J'UTRAS, OF SHERBROOKE, CANADA 7 LAMP Application filed August 2, 1928. Serial No. 297,076.
The present invention relates to improvements in lamps and has particular reference to a lamp known as a votive lamp.
Heretofore, the. lamps, known as votive lamps, employed in church service, have been usually constructed of glass. These lamps have been found defective in that they are naturally quite brittle and are frequently cracked by. the heat of the lighting flame.
An important object of the invention is the provision of alamp casing constructed to resist the heat of the lighting flame.
,A further object of the invention is the provision of a lamp of the above character which will be comparatively durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses. In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lamp constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view partly in section, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2., Referring to the drawing, wherein for the 1 purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates the lamp casing frame,
, bodies a flat, preferably circular bottom plate 6. Formed integral with or connected to the bottom plate 6 and extending vertically from the diametrically opposed sides thereof, are longitudinal side ribs 7 supporting on their upper ends a top ring 8. The upper annular 7 ring 8 is preferably larger in diameter than the bottom plate so that the side ribs 7 are arranged in upwardly diverging positions.
The frame 5 is adapted to form a durable support for an intermediate waist section 9 which is formed of substantially transparent, heat resisting material, preferably comprising mica sheets of colorless or colored struc-' ture. The waist section 9 is formed in preferably constructedof metal, which emfrusto-conical arrangement, the upper and lower annular edges being embedded in grooves formed in the upper ring 8 and bottom plate 6, respectively, while the intermediate portion thereof extends through longitudinal slots formed in the ribs 7 to securely brace the side walls of the waist section.
The lamp casing described in the foregoing, is then filled with wax 10, or any suitable substance,in which is embedded a wick. The wick is ignited and burns in the casing until the wax or other filler is consumed. It will be apparent, from the foregoing description, that the present lamp casing will provide an efficient and durable casing structure designed to resist the heat of the flame and prevent accidental breakage thereof.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A votive lamp casing comprising the combination of a cast frame including an annular base plate, a plurality of diametrically opposed ribs extending vertically from the base plate, an annular ring secured on the upper ends of the ribs in a plane parallel with the base plate and having a diameter of increased dimension with respect to the base plate, with 'a sheet of mica arranged in frusto-conical formation between the base plate and the top ring and secured in the ribs at the time of casting the frame.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK MERCIER.
