My invention relates to washing machine cylinders having sliding doors and particu larly to the means for locking the doors in closed position and for opening and closing the doors. The object of my invention is to provide locking mechanism, the handle lever for unlocking which will be so disposed that the thrust upon it by the operators hand will not only release the bolts but will also tend to open the door. Other objects which I have in view are to provide the locking mechanism of such character that it can be assembled or disassembled when detached from the door but cannot be disassembled when attached. Other features of my invention will be best understood when described in connection with the drawings which illustrate a washing machine provided with my improvement and in which Figure l is a front view of the washing machine cylinder with the doors closed, the casing enclosing the cylinder being shown in section.

Referring to; the locking mechanism shown on a larger scale in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, F is the lock supporting frame which is'intended to fit in the pocket D, as shown, and to be secured therein by rivets. This frame is formed with bearings F F for a sliding bolt, the outer bearing F being cast with an end plate F from which extends a lip F which lies in alignment with the side edge of the door and is adapted to fit in the guideway 6 F 5 is a stop for the handle lever which aotuates the bolt; F is a slot formed in the bottom of the frame F to permit of the assembly and disassembly of the stop finger K. G is a pivot pin extending up from the bottom of the frame F. I is a springheld in the bolt bearing F and fitted against the end of the bolt; l a cap screwing into the hearing F and holding the spring in position. J is ahub fitting on the pivot pin G, from which extends a lever arm J lying below the bolt and having an upwardly extending pin indicated at-J Also extending from the hub J i is the handle lever J3 which, by'my construction, extends toward the side edge of the door or, generally speaking, parallel to the line of the bolt. This handle lever has a beaded top indicated at J terminating in a downwardly extending end indicated at'J K is a stop finger pivoted on a horizontal pin L, secured to the frame of the lockmechanism and l1av 'ingaheel extension K from which extends a pin K entering a slot H inthe bolt H. This bolt H is longitudinally movable in the bearings. It will be seen that while my locking mechanism can be readily assembled and disassembled when the frame is detached from the door, all its moving parts are undetachable when the frame is secured in position. Detachability of the stop finger K requires that a slot, indicated at F, should be formed in the bottomvof the frame, which will permit the stop finger to be turned to a position a which will detach the pin K from the slot H when the frame is detached from the door, this slot being closed; when the frame is secured in the pocket the stop finger can not be detached.
Having now described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
'1. Arwashing machine cylinder having a sliding door, the front end of which is provided with a depressed pocket for the locks and lock actuating mechanism, in combination with avlock supporting frame secured in the pocket having bearings for a sliding bolt and an upwardly extending pivot pin for a bolt actuating lever, a bolt slidable in the bearings of the frame having a slot formed in its under side for a bolt actuating pin, a lever pivoted on the pivot pin to swing laterally in the pocket having an arm extending under the bolt carrying an upwardly extending pin engaged in the slot of the bolt and a handle lever arm extending in the pocket in a direction towards the side edge of the sliding door.
