Description
Fia-b. 18, 1930. G. KOROMPAY METHOD OF CASTING DECORATIVE DESIGNS IN RELIEF Filed March 20, 1928 l OOQ` @w01 .l-lammHOlAN nM a @006 I OO I O 0006000000 0000000 o 100m @nommmwowvomvnwoooo @owamwdol mvENToR GEORGE Ko/qo/vP/s'x ATTORNEY y Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE KOR-OMPAY, OF ROCHESTER, MICHIGAN Application filed March 20, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in methods for casting decorative designs in relief, and aims to provide means whereby a decorative design in relief and a support- 5 ing block may be cast in one operation with portions, at least, of the sides of the design undercut- Another object of the invention is to provide a method of casting decorative designs in relief wherein the surface of the block between the raised portions has pieces of ornamental stone, or mosaic, set into it, and to do so at the same time that the design and block are poured.
Vith these and other objects in view which will be mentioned as the specification proceeds, the invention is hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure l illustrates a front elevation of the completed work.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a cross section showing a form with the die, cores and ornamental stone in position and the mixture poured therein.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a form, usually an ordinary wooden form, in the bottom of which a die 2 is placed face upwards. The latter is treated, preferably with grease, so that cement or other mixture, poured thereon will not adhere to it. 3 indicates cores made of a comparatively soft plastic material such as wax. These cores are arranged around the sides of the form to provide a border around the design 4 and also to form the spaces ta between portions of the design. The depth of these cores determines the distance which the design will project and the cores, or the portions of them adjacent to the sides of the design, are preferably tapered outwardly from their undersides which rest on the die 2. On the upper sides 3 of the cores 3 ornamental stones or mosaic 5 are placed, and the cement or other mixture, either white or colored, is poured into the form so as to iill it as indicated in Figure 3.
Vhen the cement or other mixture has set the cast is removed from the form and die.
Serial No. 263,111.
The soft wax cores 3 are then cut out, and the design 4 stands out in relief with the ornament-al stones or mosaic 5 on the surface of the core portions. Meanwhile the sides of the design are undercut where the sides of the cores were tapered.
While in the foregoing the preferred method of making decorative designs in relief has been describedvand shown, it is understood that modifications may be made therein provided the said modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent is:
l. The method of making decorative designs in relief consisting of placing a die face upwards in a form, placing soft plastic cores on the die to form spaces in and around the sides of the design, said cores terminating below the sides of the form, placing ornamental stones on the top of the cores, and filling the form with cement so that both the design and a block behind it are cast in one unit and the ornamental stones appear in the surface of the block around the design and in the core portions thereof after the cores have been removed.
2. The method of making decorative de signs in relief consisting of placing a die face upwards in a form, placing soft plastic cores on the die to form spaces in and around the sides of the design, said cores terminating below the sides of the form and having their sides adjacent the design tapered upwardly and outwardly to form undercut Y sides on the design, placing ornamental stones on the top of the cores, and filling the form with cement so lthat both the design and a block behind it are cast in one unit and the ornamental stones appear in the surface of the block around and design and in the core portion thereof after the cores have been removed.
GEORGE IOROMPAY.
