Description

CLIP ATTACHMENT FOR FILE FoLDERs Filed Aug. ll, 1928 ll), )j
Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLIP ATTACHMENT FOR FILE FOLDERS Application filed August 11, 1928. Serial No. 299,063.
This invention relates to clip attachments for le folders and the like and for a method of fastening the same so as to removably secure the clip to the folder.
A further object includes the provision of simple and inexpensive means for quickly and efciently securing aile clip toafile folder in such a manner as will permit the clip and the file papers to be removed without separating the same. I further provide a clip holding slip or pocket whereby the clip member is securely held on the file folder.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter and I obtain these by the conl5 structions shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a clip pocket with a clip therein;
Fig. 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a le folder having attached thereto a simplified clip pocket;
Fig. 4 is a view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 shows a portion of a standard clip suitable for use with my invention, and
Fig. 6 shows a clip and clip pocket or holder having means for limiting longitudinal movements in one direction and lateral movements in both directions.
The saine reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the preferred form of construction, to which however I do not desire to be limited, I provide a clip holding pocket in which the clip member 10 is held against lateral movement, but said clip member may be removed longitudinally from its pocket.
In Figs. 1 and 2 a preferred form of clip holding pocket is shown. This form comprises a base 11 of suitable material such as cloth, paper or composition liber suitable to take an adhesive agent for sticking the pocket to al file folder when in use. This base is provided with a cover or clip holder 12, which is wide enough to cover the body of the clip member 10 but leaves exposed the clip tangs 13. The clip cover or holder 12 has narrow upper flat portion 14, a clip pocket 15 and a wider lower flat portion 16.
The upper and lower flat portions of said clip cover are firmly cemented or otherwise united with corresponding portions of the base member so as to form a clip holding unit having a pocket which is open at both ends to thus receive and hold the clip member 10. In the form shown, the base member 11 is wider than the clip cover so as to provide ample surface for firmly fastening the clip pocket to the file folder or its equivalent.
In the type of clip pocket illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4 I omit the base member of Figs. 1 and 2 and use the file folder as the base member. I have also modified the clip cover or holder that it will form a slidable clip pocket as heretofore. This pocket is fastened onto the file folder directly in the manner illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 by the way of example and not in a restricted sense. The holder 12 of Fig. 6 is provided, at or near one end, with a slit 30 which is justwide enough to receive the clip tang 13 and to hold it against longitudinal movement in one direction. Slit 31 is wide enough to admit the body 32 of the clip and to thus hold it against lateral movement. This construction firmly holds the clip and still permits ready removal from the files when desired.
This type of holder may be called a simplified construction and consists of an upper narrow portion 14, a middle pocket 15 and a lower portion 16. Portions 14 and 16 are provided with extensions 2O and 21 to serve as guides when the clip is inserted and also to offer sufficient surface to firmly fasten said clip pocket onto the file folder 22. If desired the clip tang may be provided with an odset 23 to seat in a depression or hole 24 in the folder base or the folder itself to thereby provide means to prevent displacement of the clip in its longitudinal direction and thus guarding against excessive strain on the clip cover when in use. The offset 23 and depression or hole 24 serve also as clip locating means and assist in keeping the papers in proper relation.
In use either type of clip pocket may be quickly fastened onto a file folder by moistening the adhesive and applying the pocket in position with the narrower upper portion close to the folding line 25. Obviously the pockets may be fastened in any desired position and fastening means other than adhesive may be used.
It Will be evident that in use the tangs 13 are bent up at 23 to right angles to thus receive the iile papers in the known manner. If noW it is desired to remove the clip and filed papers, said papers are slipped from one tang7 Which is then bent straight, and the clip is Withdrawn from its pocket. The folder is then ready to receive a new clip member for another set of file papers.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A clip holder comprising a clip-covering member to slidably receive and hold a clip, said member extended laterally as an upper and lower fold having means for securing to a base surface.
2. A clip holder comprising a clip covering member provided With a fold to form a pocket open at the ends and bordered by upper and lower lateral members having means for securing said covering member to a base.
3. A clip holder comprising a flat base and a clip covering member secured to said base to hold the clip member against movement laterally, and means including a projection on the clip member for preventing movement of said clip longitudinally in one direction only.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 17th day of July A. D.,
RICHARD A. JONAS.
