Description

Feb. 11, 1930. e. LEIVA LOCKING DEVICE FOR MOTOR CARS AND THE LIKE ADV Patented Feb. 11, 1939 UNITE STATS GASPAR LEIVA, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA LOCKING DEVICE FOR MOTOR CARS AND THE LIKE Application filed June 11, 1928.
The present invention relates to a locking device for use in connection with automobiles, auto-trucks, aeroplanes and, in general, all such vehicles which are provided with internal combustion engines, and has essentially for its object to provide a security lock by means of which it is possible to cut off simultaneously the admission of fuel and the electric current to the motor.
In order that the present invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice it has been illustrated by way of eX- ample on the accompanying sheet of drawings which show, in vertical section, the device according to the present invention.
In the constructional form illustrated, 1 is a shaft provided with an actuating handle 2 secured thereto by way of the screw 8 or in other manner as desired. Keyed to the said shaft is a disc l of insulating material such as fiber or india-rubber.
The outer periphery of the said disc is provided with a plate or lining of conducting material 5 covering substantially one half of its circumference and which is capable of closing the contact between the conducting contacts 8 having conducting spindles 6 extending through insulating bushings 7 pro vided in the walls of the casing 18 which is closed at its upper and lower portions by means of the lids 15 the lower one of which has formed therein a series of openings or holes 16 for the discharge of any oil or other liquid fuel which might filter within the said cover.
Formed integrally with the said cover 18 is a central element or pipe 17 provided with a central bore as shown at 10, at the ends of which bore are secured in any convenient manner the pipes 9 through which flows the liquid fuel.
The shaft 1 is formed with a conical portion 19 which extends through a corresponding perforation in the member 17, the said conical portion being formed in turn with a transverse bore capable of alignment with the perforation 10 of the said member 17, in order to allow for the free passage, or not, of the fuel. The arrangement is such that, when the electric circuit between the terminals 8 Serial No. 284,483.
is closed, the free passage of the liquid fuel through the apparatus is established, and vice-versa, for which purpose it is sufficient to operate the handle 2.
The adjustment of the lock for the oil is effected by means of a compression spring 14 seated against two washers provided at the lower end of the shaft 1, as may be seen from the drawing, and at the upper part by means of a nut 11 screwed onto a widened portion of the said shaft and on disc 4. Between the disc 4; and nut 11 there is provided a washer formed with an arm 13 which may be engaged by the key of a lock or the like 12 provided on the upper lid and secured thereto by means of a screw 20.
The operation is clearly apparent from the drawing. With the motor running, the parts assume the position as shown in the drawing, in which the electric circuit is closed and the free passage of the fuel through the device is established.
Turning the handle 2. the electric current is cut-off as well as the passage of fuel, the shaft being locked in this position by means of the lock 12.
Obviously, the invention is capable of various modifications of construction and shape without departing from the scope thereof, which are clearly defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described and ascertained the nature of the present invention and in what manner the same is to be carried into practice, what I claim as of my eXclusive invention and proprietorship is A combined electric and fuel switch particularly for internal combustion engines comprising a casing provided with a pipe for the fuel integral with the casing; a shaft in said casing having a conical portion cooperating with the pipe; a disc of insulating material mounted on said shaft and having a contact strip on its periphery; a pair of contacts oppositely arranged in said casing and cooperating with said disc and contact strip a cover for said casing; a washer mounted on said shaft and having an upstanding arm thereon; a lock mounted in the cover adapted to lock the shaft against movement by means of the arm; and means for rotating the shaft to open or close the switch by means of the disc, contact strip and the contacts at the same time to open or close the fuel pipe by means of the conical portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
