This invention relates to certain improvements in web roll changing mechanisms for printing machines.
In the operation of modern high speed printing machines, several web rolls are needed during theoperation of a run of the machine and it is necessary to change the rolls, that is, to unite the'ends of an expiring web with a new roll. In this changing or supplying of a new web roll to the press it is desirable, of course, that as small amount of time be consumed as possible, so
as not to decrease the press product any further than can be avoided. Under some conditions in press operation, however, it is desirable that the running web be stopped while the new roll is united thereto and, where this mode of operation is required, it is desirable that the stoppage of the press be as short as possible to effect the required pasting of the running web to the new roll.
It is the especial object of the present invention to provide a construction in which means are provided for pasting an expiring web toa new roll in which the press is stopped momentarily at the time the paste is made, this stoppage of the press, and consequently of the running web, being effected automatically.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a construction in which after the paste is made the press is again started, this restarting of the press being also effected au tomatically.
A further object of the invention is to provide a roll changing mechanism of simple form by which these desired objects may be effected.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements,
- and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In these drawings,-

Referring now to these drawings, the invention has been illustrated as embodied in various forms. Constructions .embodying the invention, however, will include a support or rack capacitated to support a running roll and a spare roll, and means will be provided for moving this support so as to effect a union or pasting of the spare roll and the running web, the running web being stopped during the time of making the paste.
In Figures 1 to 5 there is illustrated the construction of one side of the machine, it being understood that as to certain features this construction is duplicated on the other side. In the construction shown in these figures there is provided a support in the form of a pair of bent arms 1, one of which is shown, fast on a shaft 2 suitably su ported in side framing 3, this arm and side raining being duplicated on the other side of the machine. Th'ese arms are formed with bearings 4, 5 whichisupport a running roll R and a spare roll S the arms being so proportioned that upon a movement of the rack the spare roll S may be brought into con tact with the web running from the roll R, as hereinafter referred to. This support in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 5 is an oscillating support swinging from loading and running position to pasting position and back again, so that a roll can be loaded into the bearings 4, 5 on either side of the machine. This movement, of course, may be effected in various ways, but in theparticular construction shown there is provided a gear 6 keyed on the shaft 2 which is in mesh with a worm 7 on a shaft 8 which has a gear 9, driven through suitable connection, from a motor indicated at 10. The operation of this motor is manually controlledby suitable push buttons and circuits, which are not illustrated for the sake of clearness, as such are well known in the art and can be readily supplied. I
In accordance with the invention, means are provided for automatically stopping the running web when the paste between it and the spare roll is made and in the construction illustrated this is effected by stopping the press. In the preferred constructions, furthermore, means will be provided whereby after the paste is made the press will be automatically restarted, so that the only manual control required by the pressman is the operation of the motor 10.
The means whereby these functions are effected may be varied within considerable limits. In the particular construction 1llustrated, however, there is provided a switch 11 controlled by a push button 12, this switch being carried'on a bracket 13 secured to a bearing 14 of the shaft 2, before referred to. The switch mechanism controls the press motor, not shown, through a circuit indicated by a-b, the complete'circuit having beenomitted for the sake of clearness, as such can be readily supplied by anybody skilled in the art. This switch mechanism is so arranged that when the push button 12 is pushed upwardly the press motor pircuit is opened and the motor stops, thus stopping the press and stopping the movement of the web from the running roll, and when the button is released the press motor circuit is closed and the press again started up.
While the device for operating the switch may be somewhat varied, this will be automatically effected by the movement of the roll support, and where, as in the constructlon at resent under consideration, the roll support lias an oscillating movement, the construction will be such that on the return movement of the support to normal running position the switch will not be operated, so that the press will not be stopped. In the particular construction illustrated there is provided an arm 15 loosely pivoted on a stud 16 secured to the inner face of the gear 6, this arm, in the particular construction shown, having a rocking motion due to gravity between a pair of stops 17, 18. It will be observed, referring to Figure 2, that the running roll R is about to ex pire and the motor 10 has been operated to turn the rack in a counter-clockwise direction from the position shown in Figure 1. During this movement the stop 18 engages the arm 15 and the roll 19 carried by the arm engages the button 12 and operates the switch mechanism to stop the press motor, this stoppage of the press motor resulting, as before stated, in stopping the web running from the roll 5. This movement of the roll support brings the spare roll S, to which paste has been previously applied, into contact with the Web running from the roll R. A further movement of the rack brings the parts to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2 and full lines in Figure 3, when the paste is made, the operator then severing the old web from the web roll R. When the parts are in this position, the roll 19 has passed out of contact with the button 12 and the switch mechanism operates in the other direction to close the motor circuit and start up the press, the arm 15, having passed out of contact with the button 12, drops by gravity against the stop 17, as shown in Figure 3.
It will be observed that the stop 18 is arranged somewhat nearer the periphery of the gear than the stop 17 so that on the return movement of the parts to the running position shown in Figure 4 the roll 19 simply rides by the button 12 without operating it, so that the press is not stopped on the return movement of the rack.
It will be understood that the same sequence of operations takes place when renewing a roll on either side of the rack. Thus, for instance, when the roll shown as running in Figure 4 becomes exhausted a new roll can be loaded in the other roll support and the parts operated in the reverse direction. There is provided, therefore, for efiecting this a second controller arm 20 having a roll 21, this arm being pivoted on a stud 22 and moving between two stops 23, 24.
In the construction so far described it is assumed that the motor controlling circuit is such that one circuit may be utilized for stopping andstarting the press motor. Under some circumstances, certain press motor controls are employed in which one circuit is employed for stopping the press motor and another circuit for starting the motor. Constructions embodying the invention may, therefore, include means whereby such a press control may be automatically operated to stop the run of the web when the paste is made and again starting the press after the paste is made, and such a construction is to the construction already described, there is provided a second switch mechanism 25 mounted in a bracket 26 secured on the hub 14 opposite the switch mechanism 11, before referred to. This switch is controlled through a button 27 which is engaged by a roll 28 carried on a stud 29 secured to theinside surface of the gear 6, before referred to. In the arrangement shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8 the switch 11 acts to stop the press motor and the switch 25 controls the starting of the press motor through a circuit c-d. 1
It will be understood that in the control arrangement for the press motor, in which the construction shown in Figures 6 to 8 is employed, the switches 11 and 25 are arranged as to be normally open, that is, the switch 11 v operates a relay to open the press circuit when the push button is operated and the switch 25 operates a relay to close the circuit when the push button is closed, and atfer the switch 25 has been operated the press will continue to run, as far as these circuits are concerned, until the switch llhas again been operated.
It will be further understood that with the construction shown in Figures 6 to 8 the roll support has an oscillating movement, as in the construction already described, and so that this support can function to change a web roll on either side. A second roll 30, secured to the inner face of the gear 6, is pro-- vided for operating the switch 25.
The construction as so far described embodies a roll support which has an oscillating movement. The important features of the invention, however, may be embodied in a construction in which the roll support has a rotary movement, and such a construction is shown in Figures 9 to 11. In the construction there illustrated the supporting arms, instead of being bent as in the mechanism before referred to, are straight, extending diametrical- 1y opposite each other from the supporting shaft. Toefl'ect the automatic stopping and starting of the mechanism, where this construction is employed, there is provided a switch mechanism32 which is provided with a push button 33 and a second push button 34, spaced from each other a suflicient distance to permit the paste to be made after the press is stopped and before it is again started. These ush buttons are operated by a roll 35 carried on a stud 36' secured to-the inner face of the driving gear 6. It will be further understood that the motor 10 is, as before stated, operated manually through suitable switch mechanism, not shown, so thatit can be oscillated either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred forms, it will be understood that other variations and modifications may be made in the specific construction described and shown without departing from the invention as defined in the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a web roll changing mechanism for printing machines, the combination of a support capacitated to support a spare web roll and a running web roll, means for eflecting the uniting of the spare roll and the web from the running roll, and means controlled by the uniting means for stopping the running web while it is being joined to the new roll.
2. In a web roll changing mechanism for printing machines, the combination of a support capacitated to support a spare web roll and a running web roll, means for efiecting the uniting of the spare roll and the web from the running roll, means controlled by the uniting means for stopping the running web while it is being joined to the new roll, 7
and means for automatically starting the webs after the union.
3. 4. In a web roll changing mechanism for printing machines, a support havingaturning movement for sup ortin a running web roll and a spare web ro and or moving the spare web roll to pasting position, a shaft for the support, a switch mechanism mounted adjacent the shaft,a circuit for stop ing the press motor controlled by the switc and a roll engaging the switch as the'support is turned.

In a web roll changing mechanism for printing machines, a support having a turnm movement for supporting a running web roll and a spare web roll and for moving the spare web roll to pasting position, a shaft for the support, a ear concentric with the shaft, a swltchmec anism mounted on the shaft, a circuit for stopping the press motor controlled b the switch, and a roll carried by the gear or operating the switch.

In a web roll changing mechanism for printing machines, a support having a turn 'ingl movement for supporting a running web and a spare web roll and for moving the spare web roll to pasting position, a shaft for the support, a gear concentric with the shaft, a circiiit for stopping the press motor, a circuit for starting t e pressmotor, switch mechanisms mounted on the shaft for controlling the circuits, and rolls carried by the gear' for operating the switches.
