This? invention relates to improvements in car truck constructions and more part cularly to irnproyed spring-mountings,'+the object of the invention being to provide simple and 5 eflicient. means for supporting springs indirectly by the springplank and for supporting certain of the springspartially by the side frame and partially indirectly by the spring plank.
10 A further object is to provide a structure in which the spring plank is removably interlocked with the side frame, and in which a separate spring seat member is disposed upon I the spring plank, said separate spring seat member'being made with elevated spring seat portions which cooperate with parts of the side frame in supporting the outer springs of a cluster of springs, theintermediate springs of such cluster of springs being supported at a lower level upon the separate spring seat member. a I

A portion of a truck side frame is shown in h the drawing and comprises a top or compres- I sion member 1, a bottomor tension member 2, and columns 3 connecting the top and bottom members and defining an opening 4 which receives a bolster 4 In the lower portion of the opening 4, shelves 5 to provide spring seats are formed on the lower member of the side frame. In the present instance, the spring plank is preferably constructed of pressed sheet steel and ithas detachable interlocking connection with the side frame which will be operable normally to prevent lateral displacement of the side frame but which will permit easy disconnection of the side frame from the spring'plank when it isdesired to remove saidside frame. To effect detachable interlocking connection between the 5 spring plank and side frame, the intermediate portion 7 of the latter may be provided with studs '9 which rise from the bottoms of recesses 10 in the top of the portion 7 of the side frame and pass throughsuitable holes in the spring plank. The studs 9 project above the upper. faceof the spring plank and pass through suitable holes in a separate spring seatmember 11 disposed upon the spring plank and prevent, displacement of said spring seat members. The separate spring seat member may consist of a pressing or a casting and is provided at diametrically opposite positions with upstanding flanges 12 provided at their upperedges with laterally :30

In the construction shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the seat member 18 is provided with upstanding flanges 19 and shelves which extend over adjacent portions of the straight flangesS of the springplank and overlie the shelves 5 on the side frame. The shelves 20 and flanges 19 may be braced by webs 21.

I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters-Patent, is
1. The combination with a side frame, of a two-level spring bearing member having indirect removable interlocking connection by means of a lug and aperture joint with the side frame in its normal position and adapted when disconnected from such lugs, to permit lateral withdrawal of the side frame at the lower portion thereof and a spring plank eX- tending between the side frame and spring bearing member. i I v 2. The combination with a side frame and a spring plank, a separate spring seat .member mounted upon the spring plank and having elevated shelves, springs partially supported by said shelves, and means on the side frame also partially supporting said springs.

The combination with a side frame and a spring plank having removable interlocking connection therewith, a separate spring seat member mounted upon the spring plank and having elevated shelves, springs partially supported by said shelves, and means. on the side frame also partially supporting said springs.

The combination with a side frame having shelves, of a separate springseat member supported upon the spring plank, said seat member having elevated shelves in the same plane as that of the shelves on the side frame, springs seated on said separate seat member between the elevated shelves thereon, and
