FURNACE WITH DRAIN Filed May 15. 1928 1810922303.- Per-0.161202 .B. Crocier by 5 7 5%ya Patented Jan. 21-, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT osrica PERCIVAL B. OROCKER, TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SEN-TRY COMPANY, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS FURNACE WITH DRAIN Application filed May 15,
This invention relates to furnaces of the type wherein material in a suitable container is reduced to a fluid state, and the object is to provide improved means for discharging from the furnace any leakage from the container.
My invention will be well understood from the following description of the illustrative embodiment thereof shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing which shows in side elevation an electrically heated pot furnace with part broken away to disclose the interior.
Referring to the drawing, the form of furnace in which I have shown the principles of my invention embodied by way of example comprises a wall 3 of suitable refractory material defining an interior heating chamber 5 in which may be suspended the container or pct 7 for the material to be heated, the top of this pot being covered in the example shown by the movable cover sections 9. The pot may be heated by means of electric resistance elements 11 disposed adjacent the interior side walls of the chamber. Due to the thickness of the walls 3 and to the material of which they are composed, the outside of the furnace is relatively cool.
In case the pot leaks it is desirable to discharge the leakage from the interior of the furnace, and herein the bottom wall thereof is dished as indicated at 13 so that any liquid material falling into the chamber will gravitate toward a central drain passage 15 opening through the bottom wall of the furnace. It will be understood, however, that the material which is used is not liquid at ordinary temperatures and soon congeals or solidifies. Thus, if an ordinary opening were provided through which the leakage might drip, as it approached the outside of the furnace and a cooler region, the material would solidify and adhere to the wall of the opening and tend to plug the same up. My invention pare5 ticularly provides for preventing the material from solidifying in the drain passage.
In the form of my invention shown this purpose is attained in two ways; first, by preventing material from making contact with the wallof the passage in the cooler part there- 1928. Serial No. 277,894.
of adjacent the discharge end, and, second, by minimizing the temperature drop along the wall of the passage. These results are both conveniently obtained by the arrangement shown in which the passage 15 is provided with a metal bushing 17 lining the walls thereof which, being of relatively high heat conductivity, will maintain the discharge end of the passage relatively warm Without material loss of heat from the interior of the furnace. Quite apart, however, from heating the wall of the discharge passage in this manner, I preferably provide means whereby contact of the leaking material therewith will be at most accidental, and I have herein shown integrally formed at the upper portion of the bushing 17 a dished drain plate 19 of annu lar form into which the liquid material is discharged from the sloping surface 13 and having a central opening 21 through which the material falls, this opening 21 being conveniently axially. aligned with the bushing 17. The cross-sectional area of the bore of the bushing 17 is considerably greater than that of the opening 21 so that the inner portion of the dished drain plate provides an overhanging lip or flange and liquid material discharged over this flange and dripping over the edge thereof will fall freely through the bore of the bushing away from the walls thereof and, even if congealing while falling, will drop freely in the discharge passage like a drop of rain or a pellet in a shot tower without coming into Contact with the wall of such passage in such manner as would permit it to freeze thereon. In case any material should back over and around the edge of the lip under certain conditions of discharge, the relatively high temperature of the bushing 17 at the lower or discharge end thereof due to its good heat conducting qualities will tend to prevent adherence of the solidifying material to the wall in such manner as to obstruct the drain passage.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
