Description

Jan. 14, 1930. E. F. PRINDLE SNOW SHOVEL Filed June 20, 1928 :li l/j' Z.
' [NZENTOR Eug n? Pr/nd/e BY I ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 14, 1930 PATENT OFFICE EUGENE F. PRIINDLE, OF LAWTON, MICHIGAN SNOW SHOVEL Application filed June 20,
The main object of this invention is to provide a snow shovel which may be used as a shovel, that is, to lift snow, or pushed along as a snow plow discharging the snow at one Side.
A further object is to provide a snow shovel having these advantages which is of large capacity, at the same time not excessive in weight and is strong, rigid and durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved snow shovel with the handle disposed in a position approximating that in which it would be held in use, with the blade resting on the ground, the handle being partially broken away.
Fig. 2 is a front view with the parts positioned as described, the handle being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 33 of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line H of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blade proper illustrating the forming thereof'from a rectangular piece of sheet metal.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, the blade, designated generally by 'the numeral 1, of my improved shovel has an approximately fiat triangular portion 2, the front edge gand the right-hand longitudinal edge 4 constituting two sides of the triangle. The third side 5 of the triangle extends from approximately the front corner 6 of the triangle to a point 7 adjacent to but forwardly spaced from the diagonally opposite rear corner 8. The portion 9 of the blade, that is, the portion not embraced within the triangular portion 2, is curved upwardly and forwardly, the curve extending from the rear corner 10 to the rear corner 8, the curvature gradually lengthening as it approaches the corner 8. The curve 1928. Serial No. 286,786.
extends along the longitudinal or side edge 11 to the corner 6. I
I thus provide a moldboard-like deflector which is disposed at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the blade and isadapted to effectively direct material laterally as the shovel is pushed forwardly through the material. The incline of the curvature of this deflector is such that the material moves freely along the same.
To assist in preventing material passing off the edge 11, I provide a guard 12 which is preferably rearwardly tapered, this guard being secured by welding or brazing or pressing or by other suitable means along the edge.
A reinforcing bar 13 is provided for the front edge of the blade. This reinforcing bar has an upwardly extending arm 14 secured to the front edge of the guard, constituting a reinforcing and supporting means therefor, the front edge of the bar being beveled as indicated.
The handle 15 is secured to the underside of the blade, a conventional type of handle being illustrated.
My improved shovel is highly efficient in that it may be used as a snow plow to deliver the snow at the right-hand edge with the parts arranged as illustrated, or it is efiicient for use as a shovel, that is, a substantial quan- 30 tity of snow may be picked up to be thrown to one side. My improved shovel is light in weight and at the same time very strong and rigid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A shovel comprising a blade having a triangular approximately fiat portion, the front edge and one side edge constituting two sides of the triangle, the third side of such triangle extending from approximately one front corner to a point adjacent but forwardly spaced from the diagonally opposite rear corner, the balance of the blade being curved upwardly providing a moldboard-like deflector disposed at an angle tothe longitudinal plane of the blade and adapted to direct material laterally as the shovel is pushed forwardly through material, a rearwardly tapered guard secured to the curved side edge of the blade to project upwardly therefrom, and a reinforcing bar for the front edge of the blade having an upwardly extending arm secured to the front end of said guard and constituting' a reinforcing and supporting member therefor,
In witness whereof I have hereunto hand; v
