UNITED STATES 1,639,716 PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICIO MOTSE ASSAEL DE GUEDALIA, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
METHOD AND MEANS FOR ORNAMENTING GLASS AND LIKE TRANSPARENT SUBSTANCES. I
Application filed October 28, 1925, Serial No. 65,478, and in France August 8, 1925.
My invention relates to a method whereby ordinary or crystal glass, mlca, galalith, celluloid or like transparent substances can be given the appearance of enamelled metal,
5 and to the articles of manufacture obtained by means of the said method.
The object of the invention, consists in providing a process whereby the articles obtained by its use will be composed of a background offering a pronounced nretallic aspect, thus affording an exact im tation of enamelled metal and artistic designs sultably arranged in the background and which closely imitate the artistic ornamentations of enamelled metals.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, the back of a hair-brush ornamented according to theinvention.
In my said process, the article to be ornamented for instance the back 1 of a hair brush is covered with a sheet of ordinary or crystal glass, mica, galalith, celluloid or like transparent substance. The surface of the sheet which is to be concealed from view in the finished article, is striated or guilloched upon the major part of said surface 2, i. e. a continuous series of regular and relatively minute designs such as those by which guilloched metal is obtained is traced in high or 30 low relief upon the said surface, and the patterns employed for such work may be indefinitely varied. I then reproduce, upon one or more parts 3 of the piece of glass, or like transparent substance, which face is to be concealed, when the object is in the -fin ished state, all desired designs for example bunches of flowers 4, as shown, or portraits,
pictures, artistic or decorative patterns, this reproduction being made by any of the known means of reproduction such as photographyfor instance direct photography upon glass, decalcomania, painting, engraving, photogravure or the like. This reproduction is efi'ected after the said face of the piece has been striated or guilloched, but this reproduction can be effected either upon a guilloched or striated portion or preferably upon a smooth portion 3 which has been purposely left untreated during the guilloching operation, as illustrated in the drawing.
The guilloche upon glass, mica, galalith, celluloid or like transparent material may be carried out by any desired means, for instance by the moulding process during the manufacture of the articles, by mechanical. engraving, etching, or other suitable means.
Upon the guilloched face of the object, which as above stated is to be concealed from view in the finished piece, I apply sevno eral successive coats of dyeing or coating substances, for instance:
(a) One or more coats of single or combined colours which impart to the transparent guilloched piece the aspect of a 001- m oured substance;
(1)) A layer or coating of gold, silver, copper or other metal, in the state of liquid, powder, thin sheet, or in any other suitable state;
(0) One or more coats of a transparent or opaque paint or varnish which serves to protect the first layers or coats.
The object consisting of glass, mica, galalith, celluloid or like transparent substance '73 thus treated will offer when viewed upon the untreated or external face the exact aspect of an object in enamelled metal, thus constituting a new article of manufacture which is adapted for. a great variety of uses.
Obvously, my said invention is not limited to the exact operations as above set forth, and these are susceptible of certain modifications in detail without departing from the principle of the invention. In particular, I may employ transparent material which has been coloured either throughout the mass or only on the surface during its manufacture. The layer of colouring substance may be dispensed with should the article have been already coloured.
Obviously, I may cover the guilloched or the smooth parts carrying the artistic designs in a different manner from what is employed for the coating of the adjacent guilloched parts. For instance the'former may be covered merely with a coat of transparent or opaque colour forming a background and with a protecting coat which is transparent or not, or solely with this latter coat.
The last protecting layer, consisting of a transparent or opaque paint or varnish, may itself be covered by an electrolytic deposit, or a thin metal sheet, which assures opacity as well as mechanical protection against external causes which might damage the coat of aint or varnish.
bviously, the said electrolytic deposit, or the thin metal sheet, may be optionally dispensed with on the parts carrying an artistic design, as above set forth.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. Method of ornamenting articles of glass and like transparent substance which consists in guilloching the face of the article to be ornamented which is tobe concealed from view in the finished article, reproduc ing artistic designs upon parts of the guilloched face and coating said face with a number of colouring and protecting layers.
2. Method for ornamenting articles of glass and like transparent substances which consists in guilloching the face of the article to be ornamented. which is to be concealed from View in the finished article, reproducing artistic designs upon parts of the guilloched face, coating said parts with a number of colouring and protecting layers and coating the remaining surface of said guilloched face with a number of colouring and protecting layers but in a manner different from that by which the design carrying parts are coated. I
3. Method for. ornamenting articles of glass and like transparent substances which consists in guilloching the face of the article to be ornamented which is to be con-- cealed from view in the finished article, leaving smooth parts upon said face, reproducing artistic designs upon said smooth parts, coating said smooth parts with a number of colouring and protecting layers and coating the guilloched parts of said face with a number of colouring andprotecting'layers but in a manner different from that by which said smooth parts are coated.
4. Method for ornamenting articles of glass and like transparent substances which consists in guilloching the face of the article to be ornamented which is to be concealed from view in the finished article, reproducing artistic designs upon parts of the guilloched face, coating said parts with a number of colouring and protectinglayers, coating the remaining surface of said guilloched face with a number of colouring and protecting layers but in a manner different from that by which the design carrying parts are coated and covering the outermost of the latter layers with a metal layer leav ing the design carrying parts uncovered.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
