UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. WOOD, OE lNEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOE TO BETTY W. WOOD,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXERClSlNG APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,957, dated June 1, 1875; application tiled March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WOOD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Exercising-Tube, of which the following is a specification: v
The igure is a side view of my improved exercising-tube, partly in section, to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved exercising implement which shall be neater in appearance and more convenient in use than those constructed in ordinary way, and which shall be provided with a safety attachment to prevent the one using it, and those standing near, from being injured should the implement accidentally break.
The invention consists in the conical plugs or handles inclosed in the ends of a rubber or other elastic tube or rod in the combination ot' a cord with the rubber tube and the conical plugs or handles; and in the combination of a cross or stirrup handle with the rubber tube or rod, and the conical plugs or handles, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a rubber tube, in the ends of which are inserted conical blocks B, made with rounded outer ends or shoulders, around which the ends ofthe tube A contract, as shown in the figure, so that when the said ends are grasped bythe hands it will be impossible for the said conical plugs or handles to be drawn out.
The plugs or handles B may be made with or without a projecting knob upon their outer ends.
lf desired, the rubber may be made in the form of a solid rod, with the plugs or handles Bembedded in its ends.
The plugs or handles B are perforated longitudinally, and through them, and through the rubber tube A, is passed a cord, C, which has knots formed upon its ends ot such a size as to prevent said ends from being drawn into or through the said handles. The cord O should be made of suoli a length as'to allor the tube A to be stretched to any desired extent.
, With this construction, should the rubber tube A break, the cord Gwill prevent the ends ot said broken tube from springing around and striking the person using the implement, or those standing near.
If desired, a cross-handle, D, or a stirruphandle, may be applied to the implement by forming a tapering hole through said handle, of such a size as to receive the end ofthe tube and the tapering plug inclosed in it. In the same way the implement may be applied to the bar of a lifting-machine 5 but in this case slots should be formed leading into said tapering holes, so thattheimplementmay bereadily applied to and detached from said bar.
Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The conical plugs or handles B, inclosed in' the ends ot a rubber or other elastic tube or rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the cord C with the rubber tube A and the conical plugs or handles B, substantially as herein shown and described.
Y3. The combination of a cross or stirrup handle, D, with the rubber tube or rod A and the conical plugs or handles B,substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE W. WOOD. Witnesses:
