FLY SWATTER.

This invention relates to fly swatters and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind including a handle and a striking member carried thereby together with means operable at a point remote from the striking medium to cause such medium to have requisite movement to effect the desired swatting operation.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind constructed in aomanner whereby it is particularly adapted for use in the swatting of flies upon a ceiling or at points otherwise beyond ordinary reach.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved fly swatter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will nowproceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in side elevation of a fly swatter constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation of the outer end portion of the device as herein disclosed, the striking element being omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, H denotes an elongated handle member which may be of wood or any preferred material and which is provided at one end portion with a longitudinally disposed slot 1 extending therethrough. This end portion of the handle member H is also provided with a second longitudinally disposed slot 2 intersecting the inner portion of the slot 1 and substantially perpendicularly related thereto. Extending within the slot 1 is a plate 3 supported for pivot-a1 movement by a pin 4 disposed through the handle member H at a point to one side of the slot 2 and adjacent to the outer end thereof. This plate 3 is provided with an arcuate or cam slot 5 through which is directed a' finger or extension 6 carried by an end port-ion of a, rod B. This fingeror extension 6' is also disposed through the slot 2 hereinbefore referred to and is adapted to have movement lengthwise of such slot. The rod R is disposed lengthwise of the handle member H and is 'operatively engaged, as at 7 with a hand grip 8 of a conventional type pivotally connected, as at 9, with the handle member H.
The rod R at a point in relatively close proximityto the slot 2 is disposed through a guide member 10 herein disclosed as an eyebolt. lnterposed between this guide member or eye bolt 10 and an enlargement or annular flange 11 carried by the rod R is an expansible member 12, said expan'sible member 12 being herein disclosed as a coil spring of requisite tension encircling the rod R. The enlargement or flange 11 is preferably positioned in close proximity to the arm or extension 6 hereinbefore referred to. v
The plate 3 is continued from one end by a flat arm 14 having its outer portions quarterturned, as at 14. The outer portion of the arm 14 is provided with the longitudinally spaced loops 15 in which are engaged the spring arms 16 extending from the inner or rear port-ion of the striking element 17. By this means the element 17 is effectively held to the arm 14 but can bereadily removed or replaced as desired.
The striking element 17 is of a conventional type and for which reason a detailed description and illustration thereof is believed to be unnecessary.
The expansible member or spring 12 serves to constantly urge the rod R outwardly, the coaction between the arm or extension 6 and slot 5 resulting in the arm 14 being normally maintained at the limit of its inward swinging movement. This limit of movement is determined by contact of the inner portion of the arm 14 with the inner end wall of the slot 1.
When it is desired to swat a fly or other insect upon the ceiling of a room or at some other location ordinarily out of reach, upon proper positioning of the handle member H it is only required to exert pressure upon the hand grip 8 resulting in inward movement of the rod R to effect outward swinging movement of the arm 14 to cause the striking element 17 to contact with the insect with sufficient impact or force to kill the same.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a fly swatter constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim 1. A device of the class described comprising an elongated handle member, a plate pivotally engaged with said handle memher, a striking element operatively engaged with the plate, said plate having a slot, a rod extending along the handle member and operatively engaged through the slot of the plate whereby movement of the rod in one direction will swing the striking element outwardly and movement in the opposite direction will swing said striking element inwardly, a hand grip pivotally engaged with the handle member and with which the rod is operatively engaged, and means for constantly urging the rod in a direction to maintain the striking element'at the limit of its inward movement.

A device of the class described comprising an elongated handle member ha *ing a slot at an end portion thereof, a plate pivotally supported by the handle member and extending within the slot, said handle member having a second slot intersecting the first named slot, a rod having movement lengthwise of the handle member and provided with an arm extending through the second slot, said plate having a cam slot through which said arm also extends, and manual means for imparting endwise movement to the rod. 7 7

A device of the class described comprising an elongated handle member having a slot at an end portion thereof, a plate pivotally supported by the handle member and extending within the slot, said handle member having a second slot intersecting the first named slot, a rod having movement lengthwise of'the handle member and provided with an arm extending through the second slot, said plate having a cam slot through which said arm also extends, manual means for imparting endwise movement to the rod in one direction, and means for automatically moving the rod in the opposite direction. g
