THAWING DEVICE.

This invention relates to a thawing device for motor vehicle engine vradiators and has for an object to provide a thawing attachment for automobiles employing water1 cooling systems for the motors thereof whereby such steam as may be generated in the cooling system of the automobile maybe used for thawingthe saine when frozen, thus' dispensing with the heretofore practiced method of thaw-ing the systems as by pouring hot wat-er into the radiator thereof or throwing hot water over those parts believed to be clogged by the frozen water. Y
An additional object is to provide a thawing means which can be readily applied to various makes of automobile radiators with out undue alteration of the same or without effecting the operation Aofthe engine, the device being also well adapted for ready attachment to the Vradiators at the time of manufacture or subsequent thereto.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprising the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. l

Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicates generally a motor vehicle engine radiator that is provided at its top side with the usual filler neck 6 within which is arranged one end of an overflow r pipe 7 that leads downwardly from the radiator and terminates at one side thereof slightly beneath the same.
My novel thawing means constitutes the provision of a. sheet metal pan 8 that is open at its top side and that is so shaped as to receive within its open side the lower edge of the radiator as mor-e clearly disclosed in Figure 2. rIhe pan may be soldered, welded, or otherwise suitably secured in permanent association with the radiator and is of such construction as not to materially detract from the lappearance 'of the radiator.

same terminating at its upper edge slightly above the lower portion of the radiator 'shell in order that the Vsuction created by the ,cooling fan located directly rearwardly of the radiatortnot shown) will draw the steam F' through the. bottom of the radiator, and over the water eXit pipe thereof for thawing out any frozen water in the radiator or the pipe wherein practically all the freezing occurs. It will be noted that the steam in the pan comes into direct contact with the lower end of the radiator and therefore has a heating effect on said end which will be transmitted to the water therein and because of the circulation of the water, the temperature thereof will be raised. It is to be further noted that the radiators usually freeze, when the automobile is in motion, at the bottom, and therefore this heating of the bottom end of the radiator is very beneficial and tends to eliminate the tendency of the freezing of the water in the lower portion of the radiator.
For permitting the steam to escape without passing into the pan 8, the bottom wall of the extension 9 is formed with a gate valve opening l2, Figure 2. It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and efficient thawing device for motor vehicle, radiators that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated` and even though I have herein shown and described'the device as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without effecting the spirit and'scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a thawing device for radiators provided with overflow pipes, a steam pan All) adapted for arrangement upon the lower side of a radiator and l:tor communication with the overflow pipe of the radiator, the front wall of the pan being provided with steam discharge openings and means for directing the steam upwardly after passing through said openings so that the same may be drawn through the radiator by suction.
2. In a thawing device for radiators provided with overflow pipes, a steam pan adapted for arrangement upon the lower side of a radiator and for communication with the overflow pipe of the radiator, the front wall of the pan being provided with steam ydischarge openings and means for directing the steam upwardly after passing through said openings so' that the same may be drawn through the radiator by suction, and means for permitting the steam to exhaust from the pan at the rear thereof when the use of the steam from the overflow pipe is not desired. v
8. In a thawing device for radiators provided with overflow pipes, a steam pan adapted for arrangement upon the lower side of a vehicle radiator, a closed extension termed upon the rear side of the pan for communication with the overflow pipe of the radiator, the front wall of the pan being provided with steam discharge openings, and
means at the front end of the pan for guiding the steam upwardly to the radiator in order that the same will pass therethrough by suction. i
4.. In a thawing device for radiators pro vided with overflow pipes, a steam pan adapted for arrangement upon the under side of a radiator, and for communication with the overiiow pipe ofthe radiator, the front wall of the pan being provided with steam discharge openings, and a skirt attached to the front of the pan and disposed upwardly in spaced relation with the front oi the radiator, the upper edge of said skirt being inclined` inwardly towards'the radiator.
5. In combination with a radiator including an overflow pipe, a pan attached to the under side of the radiator and extending throughout the length 'and breadth thereof and connected withthe overflow pipe, the liront wall of the panbeing provided with a plurality of discharge openings, and means for guiding the steam upwardly after the steam passesthrough said openings so that the same will be drawn through the radiator by suction.
