sAsII CONSTRUCTION.
The present invention has to do with sheet metal sash, and is particularly concerned with the construction o f the marginal stile and rail members. i
The princlpal object of the invention to provide', in a sheet metal sash, an improved marginal member= which is light, strong, narrow and extremely economical to manufacture.
Another fimportant object is to provide anv improved lock which is especiallysu-itable for association with such a marginal memben While the foregoing statements are indicative in a general way of the nature of the invention, other objects and advantages not herein specifically mentioned willbe apparent to those skilled in the art upon a full comprehension vof the 'improved' sash construction.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, one .embodiment of the same is presented in the' accompanying drawings and in the following description, but it will be understood that such embodiment is intended merely for thepurpose of exempliication and is not to be considered as limiting the invention short of its true and intended scope, as defined by the appended claims.4
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side view` of a sash which is constructed in accordance with the invention; r
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the sash, taken on the'line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
i Fig. 3 is a vertical section, taken onthe Fig. 4 is a vertical section, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; l Fig. 5 is a verticalsection, taken on the vline 5-5 of Fig. 1;-
Fig.y ,6 is a vertical section, taken on-the line 6-6 of Fig. 4;
,V Fi 7 is `a horizontal'se'ction, taken on the line -v-7 of Fig. 1; and
l Fig. 8 isa fragmentary perspective view of one ofthe stile members of the sash.
The marginal stile and ' rail members 10 and 11 ofthe sash illustrated in the drawings are' of hollow sheet metal formation. Each 'of the marginal members consists of two U- shaped channel strips 12 and 13 which are arranged together in nested. relation, with the edges 14 of they inner strip 13 bent reverselyabout and secured to the edges of the outer strip 12, and with the back 15 of` the inner strip-'spaced a substantial distance from Athe back 16 of the outer strip. The channel in the inner strip 13 constitutes a groove for the reception of the usual glazing strip l? and pane 18, while the channel in the outer strip 12, which is relatively deep, is closed oii' by the back 15 of the iinner stripv and that partA of it not occupied by the inner strip constitutes a space 4for the reception of such hereinafter described elements as the corner reinforcing members between the stile and rail members and the bolts of the locks 'associated with the sash.
Twolocks are advantageously ap lied to the two lower corners of the s ash. ach of the locks includes an L-shaped housing 19, which opens against the sash and spans the joint therein between one of the side stile members 10 and the bottom rail member 11. The housing 19 is provided along its upper edge with a stationary lift piece 20. A ,movable finger piece 21 is positioned at an inclination above and to the, side of the lift' piece 20, and is pivoted at,'22 within the housing 19. A spring 23 is secured within l the housing at one side of the finger piece 21, and bears resiliently -against a shoulder 24 on the same, whereby to hold the finger piece normally in spaced relation to the lift piece 20. The finger piece 21 is provided,
intermediate the pivoted and free ends thereof, with a laterally projecting pin 25 which extends through an opening 26 in onel of the sides of the' channel strip 12 of the lower rail 11, and engages against the sides of a4 above but in contact with the upper surface ofthe bolt, whereby to prevent the nose of:`
the same fromv yielding upwardly whenit comes into-engagement suddenly and forcibly with a stop during downward movement ner reinforcing member 30- at a point just of the sash.` The corner reinforcing :nem-v -ber 30, which is in the form of two laterally spaced and connected L-shaped plates, is positioned in the stilemember in closely fit- 5' ting engagement with the sides thereof by means of a. two-part telescoping screw 34,
' Awhich. screw passes through the sides of the stile and reinforcingv members at a point where it is in contact with the upper edge nfof the black sa The members@ is positioned in the rail member in simllar engagement therewith'by means of another twopart telescoping screw 35, which screw passes through not onlythe sidesof the rail 15' and reinforcing members but also through the lock housing 19. Ilhe-lock housing 19 is secured against the side of the sash by means of the screw 3 5 already described and two other screws 36 and 37 which pass The spring 23 in the housing 19 normally holds the iingerpiece 21 in an elevated posi-.-
I on the same which abuts against one corner 'of the block' 33. While many different forms of combined sash guides and lock racks may be used. in. association with the particular form of sash and Vlock herein dis'-v closed, avery simple and eicient form of combined' guide and rack is shown iin the drawings.. It consists of a channel strip 39, 4to the back of which is attached, by riveting y or'welding, a number of sheet metal stampings 40, which stampingsare bent to'form horizontal stops 41 and inclined side-walls 42 for the stops. When the sash is being raised, the nose 31 of the bolt at each side" asjit passesupwardlyalong the incline side-V ofthe sash will be cammed inwardl walls? 42 -of the stampings 39, and, when the sash has reached thedesired elevation and 1 isb'eing lowered a little to lockgthe nose 31' will engage with one-of the stops2 41 and hold thevsash in that position the 'fmrggr piece 21 is depressed.
herein disclosed form partof'jthe subject; matter of..my.copending application Serial No. 174,510, iledMarch 11,1927 and are' `therein claimed.
By. the use of Athe term .nested in de scribing the arrangement ofthe 'two' channel members inthe following claims, an arrangement is meant wherein oneV of thechannel members is seated the' other' withthe'channels in such members opening substantially the same as -frem Oppositedirections.
