CAR ROOF.
Application filed October 14, 1924. Serial No. 7 423,521.
This invention relates in general to improvements in freight car roofs and more particularly to improvements in the class of car roofs usually designated as outside metal roofs, which outside metal roof is movably or flexibly positioned on the car so as to cover the wooden sheathing or inside Wooden roof of the car; and objects of the invention are the provision of a metallic roof capable of movementin harmony with the motion of the car without the neoessity of providing mullions to prevent the roof from shifting; the provision of anchors for such car roofs which are not exposed to the elements and which are arranged to hold the sheets from upward movement and from too great longitudinal movement; the provision of a roof which is capable of simple manufacture at a reasonable cost and which can be readily applied on the car without the necessity of specially skilled workmen and which when so applied will be weathertight and not require frequent repair and replacement; and such other objects and advantages of the invention as are found to obtain in the structure hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and showing, for
purposes of exemplification, a preferred form and manner in which the invention may be embodied and practiced, but without limiting the claimed invention spec fi cally to such illustrative instance or 1nstances Figure 1 is a top plan view of a car roof embodying the invention, part-s belng broken away for better illustration.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a portion of the eaves corner of a roof sheet.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a roof anchor.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 1.
On the drawings, 10' indicates the wooden side plates that extend longitudinally of the car and 11 is the inside wooden roof sheathing. 12 is the side sheathing of the car, the upper edge of which is flush with the upper surface of the adjacent side plate. 13 is the side fascia, the upper edge of which is flush with the upper surface of the side sheathing 12. The outer edge of the roof sheathing 11 extends over the side sheathing and protrudes over a portion of the side fascia 13. The eaves edges of the roof sheating 11 are gained out at 14 to receive a metallic flashing 15 whose inner edge terminates in an upwardly projecting open return bend hook 16 whose upper surface is below the plane of the top of the ungained roof sheathing and the flashing is flanged downwardly at 17 to enclose the edges 18.
of the roof sheathing and is then bent outwardly at 1.9 over the top surface of the side fascia where it terminates in a depending flange 20 secured to the outer side of the side fascia.
Roof sheets 21 are disposed on opposite sides of the ridge 22 of the roof, said roof sheets having inverted U-shaped ridge flanges 22 lapped one over the other and side flanges 23, said side flanges 23 c0nsisting of an upwardly extending inwardly inclined portion 24 terminating in a downwardly extending portion 25 spaced from the pprtion 24 and the main body 26 of the roof s eet. point 27 short of the eaves edge of the roof and the unflanged portion of the sides of the roof sheets are extended to form extensions or ears 28. The eaves edges of said roof sheets are flanged downwardly at 29 andterminate in an outwardly pressed longitudinally extending rigidifying head 30 that is arranged over the outwardly extending portions 19 of the flashing but out of contact therewith. The ears 28, flanges 29 and beads 30 of adjacent roof sheets are lapped one over the other at 31. Roof anchors 32 are provided, in the present instance, secured on the flashing at the eaves edge of the car, one between the sides of two adja cent roof sheets. These anchors consist of a top web 33 having depending inwardly inclined sides 34 spaced from each other to provide a space 35 and said sides terminate in outwardly extending flanges 36 spaced from each other and said flanges 36 are secured to the roof sheathing by means passing through the apertures 37 therein, One
Said side flanges 23 terminate at a end of each of said flanges 36 is bent downwardly at 38110 fit against the flange 17 of the flashing and is then bent outwardly at 39 to fit over the portion 19 of said flashing and the portion; 39; terminates; in a. depending flang 40 that is secured to the side fascia. The lower ends of the sides 34 are cut away to provide slots 41 through which the lapped extensions or ears 28 pass and are loosely confined therein 30 that the roof sheets may partake of proper movement and yetbe efl'ectivcly held down on the roof sheathingand prevented from shifting.
Side seam caps 42 extend from ridge to eaves, said caps being of substantially tubular form and having curved sides 43 inwvardly turned at their lower ends and terminating in' upwardly ext-ending flanges 4A: spaced froin each other-and from the sides 4l3 and when assembled on the roof, the flangesl; are arranged in the spaces prow'iclcd between the portions 24 and 25 of the side flanges 23 of thereof sheets. These sidesea-m caps enclose the sides of adjacent sheets and the anchor arranged therebetween at the eaves-of the roof and as they are not connected with the anchors, the anchors may bepositioned on the roof sheath- 4160f the side'seani, caps.- 42, wooden root sheathing l-1- longitudinally extending ridge pole 52:
I'From' the foregoing it will be apparent thattlieroof sheets are securely held'downin;:plwce' in weathertight condition without requiring woodenmnllions or outside clips andithat' thesid'e seamjcaps and the anchors constitute the sole means between. the sheets forspacing and holding the sheets in rela;-
l heninventiom as, hereinaboveset forth is embedie'd; i-n 'aparticular form of construction but, may be variously embodied within the scope rot" the, claimswhereinafter made.
