BOBBIN GUIDE FOR FILLIIEl'G-REPLENISHING LOOMS.

This invention relates to filling replenishing looms of the general type shown in U. 5. Patent No. 529,940 and is more particularly directed to means for guiding the filling car rier. from the hopper to the shuttle on re-- plenishment of filling.
In the general type of looms to which the present invention relates. there is a bobbin throat extending from the hopper towards the shuttle and .hrough which the filling carrier is passed during replenish ment of fillin The front wall of the bob bin throat has ordinarily been constructed as a. fixed bobbin abutment against which the head of a. filling carrier rests when the filling carrier is moved by the hopper into repleir ishing position. In some cases the front wall of the bobbin throat has been constructed as a bobbin guide and has been mounted for yielding niiovement towards the front of the loom. in order to permit the filling carrier to be passed through the throat during replenishment of filling.
It happens at times during weaving that the shuttle entering the replenishing shuttle box will be misplaced to some degree. This is due in many cases to the fact hat the shuttle checking or arresting means acts most energetically upon the leading end por tion or breast of the shuttle. so that the trailing end of the shuttle as it enters the box is liable to be deflected upwardly at times. and since the front wall of the bobbin throat is opposite the trailing end of the shuttle the latter l'ablo to strike the front bobbin guiding wall and cause injury to or breakage of parts.
One of the objects of the present inven tion, therefore. is. to provide a front bobbin guiding abutment, forming the front wall of the bobbin throat. which shall be normally held in raised position such that should the shuttle be n'iisplaced in the shuttle box. it will not on beat-up movement of the lay en; e the front bobbin guide. Since the filling c: rier must be directed accurately from the hopper into the shuttle on r-eplem ishment of filli the present invention contemplates means for downward movement of the front bobbin guiding wall during transfer of a filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle. the result being that while the front bobbin guiding wall is normally held in a raised position so as not to contact with misplaced shuttle in the shuttlebox. it is nevertheless moved downwardly with the filling carrier to bridge the space between the hopper and the shuttle and guide the filling carrier accurately into place, and is returned to its upper or normal position on completion of replenishment.
The invention and novel features thereof will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good practical form thereof.

The loom frame 1 may be of usual construction and have mount-ed thereon the hopper stand 2 on which is supported by the shaft 8 the rotary hopper 4 having the usual beads for the support of the filling carriers 5 which are successively moved to replenishing position by rotary movement of the hopper. The hopper may have rotary movement imparted thereto by any suitable means or be rotated by gravity, as is sometimes thecase, but in the present instance of the invention the rotary hopper is provided with the rack teeth 6 which are ongaged by suitable means for causino a step .by-step rotation of the hopper on replenishment of filling. but since such means forms no part of the present invention and it is now well understood in the art. a detailed description thereof unnecessary.
The lay 7 is mounted as usual on the lay swords 8 and is provided with a shuttle box 9liaving an open bottom 10 for the. passage of the filling carrier in the shuttle during replenishment. These parts may be of usual construction.
Extending from the hopper stand 2 is the support 11 which may be constituted as a dead or stud shaft on which the transferrer 12 is mounted. The transferrer is provided with a hub portion 13 which surrounds the dead or stud shaft 11. and is normally held in its raised position by means of a spring let, and extending downwardly from the hub of the transferrer is the lug 15 on which is pivotal-1y mounted at '16 the dog 17 engageable by a hunter 18 carried by the lay, on call for replenishment of filling. These parts also may beof usual construction.
Leading from the filling carrier hopper is the bobbin throat 19 which in the present instance of the invention has a finger 2O pivotally mounted at 21. flfitl llfil'lffltllly held yieldingly in the position indicated in F g. 1, as usualin this general type of loom,
During weaving, the shuttle entering the filling replenishing box is liable to be misplacedowing to the action of the ,shuttle checking-means, and this is particularly observable at the trailing end portion of the shuttle which is nearer the cloth selvage and substantially opposite the front wall of the bobbin guiding throat. Should the misplaced shuttle strike the front wall of the bobbin guiding throat on beatup movement of the lay, much damage is liable to occur and breakage of some of the parts. In. ac-
' cordance with the present invention, therefore, the bobbin guiding abutment which constitutes the front wall of the bobbin throat is normallyheld in a position suf ficiently raised t-hat it will not engage a misplaced shuttle in the shuttlebox, and is mounted for downward movement withthe filling carrier during transfer to accurately guide the incoming filling carrier into proper position in the shuttle.
In accordance with one form of the pres ent invention, the front bobbin guiding abutment 22 extends upwardly into the path of movement of the filling carriers 5 in the rotary hopper, and against the rear face of the front guiding abutn'ient the head of the filling carrier next to be transferred will rest.
As shown, the front bobbin guiding abutment 22 secured to an arm 23 by ap propriate means, such as the pins or rivets 24:, and provided with a hub portion 25 mounted upon the dead or stud shaft It or upon the extended sleeve orhub portion of the transferrer 12, the construction being such that the arm 23 and its connected front bobbin guiding abutment may have capacity for upward and downward movement to permitthe front bobbin guiding abutment to move downward with the filling carrier during transfer to thereby bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle during the operation of the transferrer.
The front bobbin guiding abutment is normally held in its raised position out of contact with the misplaced shuttle in the shuttle box, and as one appropriate means to this endthe arm 28 is under the influence of a spring 26, one end ofwhiohis secured the other or free end of which rests upon a fixed support 28, the result being that the spring 26 acts normally to hold the front bobbin guiding abutment in itsraised position with its bobbin guiding face in the path of filling carriers in the hopper as the latter is rotated to bring the filling carrier into transferring position. i
In accordance with one. form of the present invention, the front bobbin guiding abutment 22 is caused to partake of its downward movement with a filling carrier duringtranS- for by means associated with the transferrer.
As one good practical form of such means, the transferrer hub is provided with a plunger or yielding abutment 29 which, as shown, may be constituted by a pin 30 passed through the lug 31 carried by the hub portion of the transferrer, and interposed between the plunger head 29 and the bottom of the socketed lug is a spring 51 normally tending to move the plunger upwardly, and

In order to limit the upwa-rd'movement of the front bobbin guiding abutment as it is returned to its normal position, a stop is provided which, in the, present instance of the invention, comprises a shoulder or lug fi l extending from the hub portion 25 of the arm 23, and a fixed member 35 which may be appropriately attached to or connected with the hopper stand 2. i The sudden and impulsive movement of the transferrer to effect the transfer'of ,a' filling carrier from the hopper through the bobbin throat to the shuttle may cause the lower portion ofthe front bobbin guiding abutment to engage with the top of the shuttle, and in or er to prevent-- injury to any of the parts in such case the plunger 29 Q to a lug 27 extending from the arm 23, yields when the front bobbin guiding abut- WNMMWW v ment has been arrested in its downward movement by engagement with the top of the shuttle o: shuttle box.
Various changes may be made in the details of the present invention, and one of such modifications is indicated in Fig. 4- wherein the front bobbin guiding abutment is carried by an arm 23 as before, and is provided with a lug 36 extending laterally therefrom, and having an inclined face 37, thereby constituting a cam. In this construction, the transferrer downwardly extendii ig arm has pivotallyconnected to it at 38 the cam member 39 provided with an inclined or cam face 40, and the lower end of the cam member 39 rests upon a fixed support ii, the construction being such that when he transferrer performs its trans- V fer-ring function, the cam 39 is withdrawn fill frontwardly out of engagement with the lug 36, thereby permitting the arm 23 and its connected front bobbin guiding abutment 22 to drop as the filling carrier is transferred from the hopper through the throat to the shuttle, and when the transferrer is returned to its initial or upper position under the action of the spring 14-, the inclined faces 37 and 40 of the lug and cam 39 will act to raise the arm 23 and the front bobbin guiding a butniient into their upper position, to thereby place the front bobbinguiding abutment in the path of filling carriers as they are moved by the rotary hopper into position for transfer.
in order to prevent overthrow upwardly of the frontbobbin guiding abutiinent in the construction described, the arm 23 may be provided with a stop 42 adapted to engage with a fixed stop 41:3 secured to the hopper stand or formed as part thereof.
From the construction described it will be apparent that while the present invention provides that the front bobbin guiding abutment shall be normally held in such raised position that it will not be engaged by a misplaced shuttle in the shuttle box on beat-up movement of the lay, the guiding abutment it ilf will be moved downwardly with the filling carrier as it is transferred to guide the filling carrier accurately into place, and upon completion of replenishment of filling the front bobbin guiding abutniient will be raised to its former normal position, thus insuring at all times the accurate guidance of the filling carrier throughthe bobbin throat into the shuttle, notwithstanding that the bobbin guiding abutment is normally held in raised position out of contacting relation with the m splaced shuttle during beat up movement of the lay.
Should the trailing end of the shuttle be misplaced upwardly in the shuttle box on replenishment of filling, the downward movement of the arm 23 and the front bobbin guiding abutment may engage the top of the shuttle, with the result that the trailing end of the shuttle will be replaced;
in proper position in the shuttle box for the next picking movement of the loom.
What is claimed is:
' 1. In a filling. replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper for filling carriers, a. transferrer for transferring a filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, a front bobbin guiding abutment against which the head of a filling carrier in the hopper rests when moved. into transferring position, means normally acting to maintain the bobbin guiding abutment raised in the path of the filling carr ers in the rotary hopper to arrest rotary movement of the hopper with the leading filling carrier in tl e hopper in transferring position and movable on replenishment of filling to permit downward movementof the bobbin guiding abutment from its normal raised position to guide the filling carrier into the shuttle.
In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper for filling carriers, a transferrer for transferring a filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, a front bobbin guiding abutment having an upward 1y extending face against which the head of a filling carrier rests when in transferring position, a lifter normally acting to hold the bobbin guiding abutment in raised; position with its upwardly extending face in the path of the filling carriers in the rotary hopper andniiovable by the transferrer to permit the bobbin guiding abi'itinent to move downwardly with a filling carrier as it is being transferred to guide the filling carrier into the shuttle. 3. In a filhn g replenishing loom, the com- *bination of a rotary hopper for filling carriers, a transferrer for transferring a filling carrier from thehopper to the shuttle, a front bobbin guiding abutment engaged by the head of a filling carrier when in transferring position, means normally acting to hold the bobbin guiding abutment in raised position out of the path of a misplaced shuttle in the shuttle box on beat-up movement of the lay and movable by the transfcrrer to permit the bobbin guiding abutment to move downwardly on transfer to bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle and guide the head of the filling carrier into proper position in the shuttle.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper for filling carriera a transferrer a front bobbin guiding abutment having an upwardly extending face engaged by the head of a filling car rier in the hopper when in transferring position. and mounted for downward movement with a filling carrier during transfer to bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle, and means for again lifting the tending face against which the head of a filling carrier is engaged when moved by the hopper into transferring position, means for normally holding the front bobbin guiding abutment in raised position that it may not be struck by a misplaced shuttle in the shuttle box as the lay beats up and movable on downward movement of the transferrer to permit the front bobbin guiding abutment to move downwardly with a filling carrier during transfer to bridge the space between thehopper and shuttle and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle. v
,6. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper for filling carriers, atransferrer, a front bobbin guiding abutment having an upwardly extending face against which the head of a filling carrieris engaged when moved by the hopper,
into transferring position, means for nor 'mally holding the front bobbin guiding abutment in raised position that it may not be struck by a misplaced shuttle in the shut tle box as the lay beats up, and means actuated by the transferrer for moving the front bobbin guiding abutment downwardly with the filling carrier during transfor to bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper for filling car riers, a transferrer, a guiding abutment normally in the path of a filling carrier as the hopper is rotated to place the filling carrier in transferring position, an arm having a vertical movement on which the guiding abutment is mounted and means actuated by the transferrer for moving the arm and guiding abutment downwardly with the filling carrier during transfer for guiding the filling carrier into the shuttle.

In a filling replenishing loom, the com binationof a rotary hopper for filling car riers, a transferrer stud, a transferrer mount ed on the stud for transfer movement, a guiding abutment normally in the path of movement of a filling carrier as the hopper is rotated, an arm mounted on the transferrer stud and carrying said guiding abutment, means normally'acting to hold the guiding abutment in the path of a filling carrier in the hopper, and yielding means actuated by the transferrer for moving the guiding abutment towards the shuttle duringltransfer for guiding the filling'earrier to the shuttle.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hopper for filling carriers, a transferrer, a front bobbin guiding abutment mounted for movement with a filling carrier during transfer between the hopper and shuttle, means normally acting to maintain the front bobbin guiding abutment in raisedposition out of the pathof a misplaced shuttle in theshuttle box, and means actuated by the transferrer on. replenishment of filling for causing movement of the front bobbin guiding abutment towards the shuttle to bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle during transfer.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hopper for filling carriers, a transferrer, a front bobbin guiding abut' ment mounted for movement with a filling carrier during transfer between the hopper and shuttle, means normally acting to maintain'the front bobbin guiding abutment in raised position out of the path of a misplaced shuttle in the shuttle box, a stop for limiting the upward movement of the bobbin guiding abutment, and means actuated by the transferrer on replenishmentof filling for moving the front bobbin guiding abutment towards the shuttle to bridge the space between the hopper and shuttle'and guide the filling carrier into the shuttle during transfer.
