Description
Patented July 19, 1927.
UNETED STATES LELAND B. WHIPPLE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TABLE FOB, JOINTERS.
Application filed July 11,
My invention is designed to provide an improved table for planing machines commonly known as jointers and myleading objects are to provide means for accurately adjusting a table upon the bed of the machine and for tightly clamping the table to the bed of the machine during operation, Nhile permitting ready detachment of the table from the bed of the machine to provide ready access to the cutting cylinder for setting and adjusting the knives or the ready and efiicient removal of dust or shavings from between the bearing surfaces.
In its preferred form, my invention is embodied in a bed having converging inclined tops on which are seated a pair of table members having inclined bases, the table members being adjustable upon the bed by manually operated screws, and the bed and table members being securely locked in ad justed position by means of a cam shaft journalled in one of the parts and cooperating with an apertured member secured to the other of the parts.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing of a preferred embodiment ofmy invention.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a table and part of the bed on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the adjusting screw and the mounting therefor.
As illustrated in the drawing, a bed 1 is provided with converging inclined top surfaces 2 terminating at the edges of the median recess 3 in which is mounted a rotatable cutter cylinder 4. Similar tables 5, provided with undercut tops 6, have inclined bottom surfaces 7 adapted to slide upon the inclined surfaces 2 of the bed. The tables are held against lateral movement by ribs 8 engaged in ways or grooves 9 in the bed, which is also provided with longitudinal slots 10 through which project tongues 11 secured to the respective tables by bolts 12 and containing elongated apertures 13.
1923. Serial No. 650,823.
Shafts 14 j-ournaled in bearings 15 15 of the bed, have cam ends 16 disposed in the elongated apertures 13 so that the rotation of the shafts effects the engagement of the cams 16 with the bottom walls of the apertures 13 to draw the tables tightly against the bed. The shafts are rotatable by handles 17 pinned thereto and are held against axial movement by engagement therewith or with the handles of rotatable clips 18 fixed on the finger pieces 19, the latter having bosses threaded or journalled in the bed.
It will be understood that when it is desired to adjust the elevation of one of the tables, the corresponding handle 17 is rocked to turn the shaft 14 and disengage the cam 16 from the bottom wall of the slot 13 to permit longitudinal movement of the table, such longitudinal movement being. effected by turning the hand wheel 24 to feed the screw 22 into or out of the socket 23. When the desired adjustment has been secured, the handle 17 is rocked in the reverse direction to turn the shaft 14 and bring the cam 16 into engagement with the bottom wall of the aperture 13, thus drawing the table firmly against its seat. hen it is desired to remove a table, to obtain unobstructed access to the cylinder 4 or recess 3, to remove chips from between the sliding surfaces, or for any other reason, the corresponding clip 18 is turned'by its finger piece 19 to permit the axial withdrawal of the shaft 14 from the tongue 11, whereupon the table can be lifted clear of the bed, the screw 22being movable with the table from the open bearing 21.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a machine of'the character described, a bed'and atable having cooperating inclined surfaces, one of said parts containing a slot and the other of said parts having a tongue projecting through said slot-and containing an elongated aperture, and a shaft journalled in said slotted part and having a cam rotatable in said elongated aperture.
2. In a machine of the character described, a bed and table having cooperating inclined surfaces, one of said parts containing a slot and the other of said parts having a tongue projecting through said slot and containing an elongated aperture, a shaft journalled in said slotted part and having a cam rotatable 10 I in said elongated aperture and a clip for holding said shaft against axial movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my narne this 2nd day of July, 1923.
LELAND B; VVHIPPLE.
