RAZOR SHARPENER.

` cutting the hand in the mounting operation.
Of the accompanying drawings: F 1g. f 1 is a section of" my improved Y Sharpener in place up on a razor.V i
Fig. 2 is a-section of the same on the broken section line of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 2. i
Fig. 3 is a section on the same line, looking in the direc-tion of the arrow 3. i
Referring to the drawings, the sharpener comprises a pair of journal shells 10. 11
hinged together Yby a shaft 12, the shells being formed with razor-clamping lugs 13,
13 adapted to be brought together upon the` blade-journal ears 14, 111 of a safety razor having'a pivoted blade 15, the said `ears be- -v ing formed with notches 16, 16 to receive the lugs and thus to position the Sharpener upon the razor. The lugs 13 are preferably formed with shoulders, as shown at 13, 13a, F ig. 1, to position the sharpener lengthwise of the blade.
The shells are urgedV apart about their hinge shaft 12 by a' hinge spring 17 so that they stand open for the reception of the razor until they are intentionally vclosed upon it.
Journaled in each shell is an abrading or stropping roll 18 having at its end a gear 19 secured against relative rotation, the two gears being adapted to mesh when the shells are brought together upon the razor and to be driven, through gearing hereinafter describedT by a rratchet crank 20 mounted upon the shaft 12 and adapted to turn the same in only one direction. n
For driving the rolls from the hand crank 20 the roll in the shell 1() has secured to its end opposite its gear 19 a gear 21 meshed with a small gear 22 which is journaled upon a stud 23 projecting from the inner face of the shell. the gear 22 being meshed with ay large gear 24 which is secured upon the hinge shaft 12, so that the gears 21, 22 and 24 remain entrained when the shells are opened and closed. I
For oscillating the blade 15a cam 25 is secured upon the shaft 12, and pivoted in the respective shells 10, 11 at 27, 28 area pair of blade-oscillating levers 29, 30 having their upper arms formed to coact with the cam 25 and having their lower arms formed at 60 their lower ends with lateral extensions 29, 30a projecting to the middle of theA device and there formed with terminal lugs, such as the lug 30h, Fig. 1, adapted to engage the razor blade 15 at one middle Josition onlT 05 the engagement of the blade at its middle providing substantially even pressure of the blade against the stropping roll along its length.
For assuringthat the cam 25 will be in such neutral position when the Sharpener is opened lfor theinsertion of the razor, so
that the levers 29, 30 will'freely receive the vblade between them without danger of cutting the rolls, the shells 10, 11 are formed with apertures 10, 11a respectively adapted to register with each other when the sharpener is closed, and the handle 20"L of the crank 20 is made slidable in the latter and is adapted to lock the two shells together against the force of the hinge spring 17,
The turning of the handle to locking position thus assures that-the cam will be prop- `erly positioned when the Sharpener is again opened for the reception of the razor.
The form of the blade-oscillating levers is such that they may be ofvsubstantial construction andy yet exertA a suiiiciently yielding pressure upon the blade, the radial portions of their lower arms acting as torsion springs against which the lateral eX- tensions 29, 30a have substantial leverage, 105
and the blade itself being somewhat yieldt'lhe provision of the ytwo blade-oscillating levers, mounted in the respective shells,
especially with the provision for assuring the proper positioning of the cam, provides for easy and safe mounting of the razor in 11h11 511111111311111', 11s4 1h11 wo invern Swing' ruido i \v 1.111111' ii'ion. 011m othoi' in 11h11 oponing ont oi' the ahr-i111 in which they 111'11 111o11111'o1'i1 so 111:11'. the dovico boing; opened ont. ho 111x111' 111:1)Y oo mounted ihorvn simply hy hry'ing.; the 117,111 in 1111100 11g11i11131 one Side of tho dovico 11nd 1111-111 dosing' down the other Sheii upon i1u 1114 diniinognishmi 'from inserting' tho binde migo iiii; 1111111111111 two closely spaced 1111111113, 1114 in 1113' 1111111111: above roorrod to.
