PATENT o FFICE.

ASH RECEIVER.
Application filed February 24, 1925.
' This invention' relates to ash receivers for the use of Snickers but more. particularly to tops for the same, and has for its prima-ry object to provide a simple and useful'article of thisclass.
A further object of my' invention is to provide a. top which muy he used on a variety of different kinds of receptacles and will form therewith an ash tray. The many other objects and advantages of my invention will he better understood by reference to the following specification when considered in connection vwith the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment thereof, in which Fig. l is a plan view of my improved ash tray top, illustrating one method of use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating a different method of use.
Referring to ,the drawing, my improved ash tray top comprises a substantially cupshaped member 5 having a rim 6 and opening 7 preferably centrally located therein.
The body of theA ash receiverv top is preferably made of wire netting as 8 havin aniesh sutliciently large to permit the as es f to fall therethrough when a burning cigar or cigarette is placed thereon but of insufficient size to permit the passage of such cigar or cigarette. The ends of the wires forming the netting are preferably welded, soldered,
or otherwise attached to the inner vface of the rim 6 yas at 9.
- The opening to admit' the cigar or cigarette butts to the receptacle as 10 may be formed in various ways but I prefer to cut away the necessary portion of the'netting and insert a sheet metal band as 11 which may be attached to the netting in the same iiiiiiiiier as the band 6 forming the rim. The
portion of the netting surrounding thisl haiid l0 may be depressed as at l2 so that when cigars or cigarettes are ,placed thereoii they will tend to slide toward the middle ol' the iop, but it should be clearly understooil that this portion may be made flat, if preferred. lVhen the 'dep'. essed form of top is used, it is advisable to have the band 11 project above the adjoining portion of the iieltiiig, so that the cigars or cigarettes will not accidentally pass through the opening 7 into the receptacle. It will be readily appre- 'elated that the body of my improved top ymaintained at an interval Serial No. 11,035.
may be made of perforated metal instead, of netting.
Ihe ash receptacle top forming the present invention is adapted to be used in a variety of dilferent ways. In Figs. l and 2 the top is shown applied to an ordinary can such as is lused to contain cigare-ttes. These tops may be sold separately and will convert any type of Vcan or receptacle into a very convenient form of ash tray. This top may be slid Aover a receptacle in the manner illustrated in Figs. l and 2 or placed in such a receptacle as illustrated in Fig. 3. In Fig. 3 the ash receiver top is placed in a shallow receptacle as 13 and rests on its bottom edge. e
Anordin'ary saucer or shallow dish may used as the receptacle, as will be readily evident. The cup shaped form of the top causes the cigar supportin surface to be rom the bottom of the receptacle.
In the ash receptacle top shown in Figs. 1 and 2,.I have incorporated a delector as 14, which in the present embodiment consists of a metal strip or wire bent in substantially U-shape and having its ends l5 attached to lthe sheet metal band 11 surrounding the opening to receive the cigar or cigarette butts. The primary object of this deflector is to prevent the accumulation of these butts directly beneath the opening. It will be readily appreciated that this de'flcctor may bel made in many different ways. This deflector may be made in different lengths, depending upon the depth of the vessel on which the top is to be used, or it may be ad justable for different depths, as will be readily appreciated.
It willhe evident from the foregoing description that my device will permit substantially any form of receptacle to be converted into an ash receiver. The top iS simple in construction and may beeconomically produced. .This top is very convenient in use as it enables the burning cigar or cigarette to be laid upon any portion of the reticulated supporting surface and any ashes becoming detached therefrom will immediately fall into the receptacle. Such a device is far more convenient than the usual form of ash tray in which small convert plates are provided' to permit the smoker to place his cigar or cigarette thereon. Such plates retain the ashes and these ashes frequently adhere to the moistened portion of the cigar or cigarette unless the smoker is always ycareful tol place the same/on a clean porment of parts may be considerably changed Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the following claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination With an ,ash receiver having a top provided with an aperture for the passage of ashes, cigar butts or the like,
a defiector comprising a member having a -comparatively narrow edge disposed substantially centrally beneath said aperture. y
2. In combination With an ash receiver having a top provided Withl an aperture for the passage of ashes, cigar butts or the like, a deector suspendedv from said top and disposed substantially centrally beneathsaid aperture.
3. In a top for an ash receiver'having a substantially Icup-shaped member having a portion thereof reticulated, an opening 1n said body to admit objects of greater size than can pass through the reticulated portion thereof, a metal band surrounding said opening and attached to said body, the combination of a deflcctor suspended from said band.
