This invention relates to a coupler or connecter which is more particularly intended for connecting electric wires or conductors wit-hout soldering, although the same may be used for other analogous purposes.
One of the4 objects of this invention is to provide a connecter of this character which permits of not only properly. connecting wires ofthe same diameter but wires of widely different diameters as well without liability of producing an uneven strain on any of the parts which otherwise would be liable to distort the same and impair their eiciency. t i
Another object of this invention is the provision of such a connecter whichoperates as a lock to prevent loosenin of the nuts and bolts which couple the Yp ates forming' the main elements of this connecter` or fa s tener and thus insure a firm and reliable connection between .the respective wires.
Further objects of the invention are to so construct the connecter that the same permits a connection between wires to be made in less time than heretofore, and also to en able one man to effect such connections and thus dispense with an assistant and effect a considerable economy in this class of work.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is aside elevation of a connecter embodying my invention and coupling two wires of different diameters. Figure 2 is a cross section taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Figure 3 is aperspective view of a pair of clamping plates forming part of my improved connecter.
Similar characters `of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several' views.
In its general organization, the. connecter made in accordance with my improvements comprises two clamping plates adapted to. engage opposite 'sides of the wires to be cou piece of resilient sheet metal whichv is stamped or bent by suitable dies, so that the same is provided with three longitudinal parallel corrugations 13', 14, 15. The two corrugations 13, 15 arranged adjacent to the longitudinal edges of the plate are provided on their inner sides with longitudinally grooved jaws 1.6 which are preferably AV-shaped in cross section. The central corrugation 14 of each plate is preferably somewhat wider than the edge corrugation and -bulges outwardly so as to presenta convex bearing face 17 on the outer side of this corrugation. p.
The tightening means preferably consists 4of two bolts which are arranged side by side lengthwise of he plates and each 'having its body or shank 18 passing ltransversely through corresponding openings 19 formed in the central corrugations of the plates riear one end thereof and engaging the inner side ofl its head 20 with the convex bearing face of one of the plates'while its screw nut 21 enga es itsinner side with the convex bearing ace of the other plate. The openings 19 in the plates are enlarged in the dlrection of the width of the same, in order to permit these plates and bolts to rock the requisite extent transversely upon each other to enable the jaws of the platesto, adapt themselves to the surfaces of the wires to be connected.
In the operation of connecting'two wires with this connecter, the wires are placed be tween the plates and opposite sides respectively of the tightening bolts, andthe cooperating jaws 'on the corresponding longi-l tudinal edges of the two plates are engaged with opposite sides of one of the wires. The
bolts are now tightened so that the jaws of' insure a good electrical connection.
As..the clamping plates ada t themselves to the surface of two wires o different diameter, these plates ltilt on the body of the` bolts during which time the heads and nuts of the latter rock on the convexv outer bearing surface of the plates and adapt themlselves thereto, so that each headand bolt dered less effective but also preventing the bolts'from being used over again if the occasion requires 1t. l. i
Moreover,` by providin the plates centrally with outwardly` bu ging corrugations whichv are engaged by the heads and nuts `of the bolts, these corrugations form springs which are put under tension when the bolts yare tightened and which operate as locks revent the nuts and bolts from becommg loose` v It will be ap arent from the foregoing, that this device 1s ada i table to a wide ran e of wires of various iameters and that 1t may be put in use easil and expeditiously an Without liability o bendinglthe bolts, stripping the threads of the same, or putting any undue strain on any-of its parts.
' I claim as my'invention: Y
.A wire connecter comprising two plates each of which is bent from a piece of sheet metal to form three having'convex outer si es and concave inner sides, the central corrugation of each plate being wider than the end corrugations on opposite sides. thereof and eachl central corrgation having an opening, said plates being assembled with the concave sides of their. vend corrugations facing each otherl and 4 adapted to engage opposite sides of the wires to be gripped, and a clamping bolt passing through the openings of the central corru- 'ga-tions and bearing with its head against theconvex side of the central corrugation of one plate and with its nut against the convez(A side of the central corrugationof the other plate.l y v JOHN ZILLIOX.`
