Description

i 1,634,610 July 5, 1927. v E. DALE I WRENCH Filed Sept. 11. 1926 attorney Patented July 5, 1927.
UNITED STATES CHARLES E. DALE, OF BARNSDALL, OKLAHOMA.
WRENCH.
Application filed September 11, 1926. Serial No. 134,850.
This invention relates to wrenches and it is primarily an object of the. invention to provide a wrench of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in connection with wire lines such as used in oil and kindred wells and which wrench is employed to prevent back twist in the line.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a wrench of this kind which will not injure the wire and which may be readily and effectively applied to the line.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in top plan of a wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in working position, the wire line being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of one of the jaw members unapplied;
Figure 4 is a view in rear elevation of the jaw member illustrated in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in plan of the elongated handle member herein employed.
As herein disclosed, my improved wrench comprises a jaw A formed from a single rod of steel or other preferred material bent centrally upon itself to provide a substantially U-shaped member 1. The side arms of this member 1 are continued by the substantially semi-circular extensions 2 terminating in the elongated shanks 3 in parallelism with the side arms of the U-shaped member 1.
The shanks 3 extend beyond the outer end of the member 1 which constitutes the bill of the jaw and are connected outwardly of such bill by a rivet or pin 4. "This rivet or pin 4 provides amounting for an end portion of a handle member H, the pivoted poreffective use with' wire lines of various diameters.
It will be particularly noted that the handie member H is between the shanks 3 so that the pressure of the jaw 5 upon the wire line is between the extensions 2 and {vhich further prevents damage to the wire From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in'carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A wrench comprising a handle jaw having parallel. side edges and a curved end edge provided with teeth, a pivot pin passing transversely through the handle jaw at a point spaced from the curved end edge thereof, a jaw member formed from a single rod having flattened parallel end portions which lie at the opposite sides of the handle aw and which are pivoted upon the pin, said pivoted jaw having a bill end portion which is disposed approximately parallel with the end portions of the said jaw and spaced therefrom and the opposite side portions of the pivoted jaw being connected together at the extremity of the bill end by a transversely disposed arcuate intermediate portion.
In testimony signature.
whereof I hereunto aflix my CHARLES E. DALE.
