FILING AND SHIPPING RECEPTACLE.

This invention relates to filing receptacles.

The general object of the invention 1s to provide an improved filing, storing, shipping and indexing receptacle wherein fragile articles such as lantern slides, biological specimens, and similar objects may be safely housed and may, at the same time, be readily removed from the receptacle.

A specific object ofthe invention is to provide a novel receptacle for fragile articles wherein a plurality of compartments are provided and wherein theseveral compartments are indexed and are provided with cushioning members thereon. j

Another object of the invention is to pro ride an improved construction of partition for use in filing fragile articles.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawing by' reference characters, I have shown a receptacle at 10. This receptacle may be of any desired character and is preferably made of heavy cardboard. A suitable covermay be pro vided for the receptacle, as shown.

Within the receptacle 10' I arrange a plurality of partition members 12. These partition members extend from side to side of the receptacle as shownin Fig. 3. The partitions are at each end with an aperture. to

receive assembling and holding rods 13. The upper end of these rods is preferably sharpened as at 14'to aid in quickly centering the partitions upon the rods.

The partitions are preferably made of a soft pulp board or cardboard so that they will possess considerable cushioningproperty and flexibility While at the same time they will have enough rigidity to thoroughly pro I tect articles placed between them.

Between each'of the partitions 12 I arrange a plurality of pulp board spacing members 15.

- As stated, the receptacle is'particularly adapted 1 01 use in' preserving, shipping,

storing and indexing lantern slides and biological specimens. This use requires that the compartments 17 between the partitions 12 be of different width. My invention satisfies this requirement since I can build the partitions to any width by adding sufficient layers of the spacing members 15 until the desired width of compartment is provided. The assembling and holding rods13 which are preferably of wood may be glued within theapertures in the members 12 a-nd15; These members 12 and 15 will also preferably be glued together so that theentire assembly of partitions as shown in Fig. 4, will be rigid and will maintain-the rigid position even when stored or packed Without the shipping receptacle 10.

In order to provide an index member for the compartments I arrange strips 18 along the upper edges of the assembled partitions as shown in Fig. 3. These strips 18 are provided with stiffening members 19 at the upper end thereof which hold them in position and the outer part 20 of the member 18 beneath the reinforcing strip 19 is provided with suitable indexing characters: 21 here shown as numerals although it will be understood that other indicia may be usedfor indexing purposes.

. The portions. 20 -of the strips 18 may be glued to the top of the spacing members 15 or the strips may be free to fold away from the spacing members as shown in Fig. 6.

It is frequently desirable to use bottom cushioning'members in addition to the end cushioning and spacing members 15.' Such spacing members are shown at-23 in Fig. 5. When these bottom cushioning members are utilized the construction of the compart ments and container will be substantially as previously described with the addition of the cushioning. members 23 which are secured adjacent the bottom of the compartments 17 In Fig. show a modified formof my invention wherein the container 10 and holding rods 13 are provided. The partition members according to this modification may be manufactured as a long strip and maybe cut off to the desired length so that they can be inserted within the receptacle. The spacing members 15' havethe partitions 12 centrally arranged with respect thereto so that the partitions will be correctly spaced. The strips 18 with the index portions 20 Will be provided in this modification as in the embodiment first described.
