' Application filed July 6,
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in end gates and more par-" ticularly to a means 'for retainingan end gate in various adjusted positions relative to the sides of a wagon box. The main object of my invention is the provision of an improved means for locking an end gate ina closed position and whereby the same may be locked and securely retained in various adjusted positions relative to the wagon box.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above character wherein the end gate is mounted for swinging movement relative to the wagon box and manually operated means is provided for locking the gate in various positions relative to the box and securely retain the same against movement until the locking means has been released.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of. construction and the combination and arrangement ofparts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the-claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a wagon box illustrating my improved device attached thereto, parts of the same being broken away and illustrated in cross section,
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view,
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the locking plate, and
Fig. 5 is a detailed section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, it will be noted that the numeral 1 indicates the side walls of a wagon box and 2 the bottom of the box. Attached to the bottom of the box adjacent the open end of the same is a reinforcing plate 3 and bolted to the reinforcing plate are the hinge plates 4 which are provided with spaced sleeves 5 adapted to receive the pintles 6 which hingedly connect the arcuate locking plates 7 to the sleeves 5. The plates 7 are formed upon the lower ends of the hinge plates 8 which are connected to the end gate 9 and extend from the top to the bottom of the gate as shown in Fig. 1 so as'to reinforce the body of the gate.
Attached to the hinge plates 4; are the guide members 10 in which is slidably mounted the bar 11, said bar having locking tongues 12 formed thereon adapted to engage with thespaced recesses 13 formed in 1925. Serial No. 41,801.
the arcuate locking plates 7 whereby to res; i
ta-in the end gate 9 invarious adjusted positions relative to the body of the wagon box; 'lhe bar 12 has an outstanding ear 14 on one end and pivotally connected to this ear is a link 15 which in turn is pivotally connected to the lower end of the operating lever 16. Attached to one side of the wagon box isa plate 17 having spaced perforated ears 13 at the lower end thereof between which the body of the lever 16 is positioned and a pintle 19 is extended through the ears and body of the lever for pivot-ally mounting the lever as is fully illustrated in Fig. 1.
The lever v16 is provided with a tapering lug 20 on one side thereof, adapted to be engaged by a spring member 21 which normally retains the upper end of the lever in spaced relation with the plate 17 said position retaining the locking tongues 12 in any one of the recesses 13 in the plates 7 so as to prevent movement of the end gate relative to the wagon box.
It will be noted that the plates 7 are provided with an arcuate portion in which the recesses 13 are formed so that during the swinging movement of the gate '9, any one of the recesses 13 in the plates 7 may be brought into alignment with the locking tongues 13, the spring 21 forcing the bar 11 in one direction so as to move the tongues 12 into the recesses 13 which may be aligned therewith.
It will be noted that various sets of recesses are provided in the plates 7, the innermost set being used for receiving the tongues 12 and retaining the end gate in a closed position as shown in Fig. 1, withthe other set of recesses'13, the end gate may be positioned at various angles relative to the wagon box and securely retained in this position until the lever 16 is actuated to move the locking tongues 12 from the recesses 13.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and inex pensive device wherein the end gates of resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice Without sacrificing any of the novel features of construction or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination With the bottom and the end gate of a Wagon, of hinge sections secured to the bottom, hinge sections secured to the end gate, means pivotally connecting the first mentioned hinge sections to the second mentioned hinge sections, arcuate plates provided by. the second mentioned hinge sections, and having'spaced recesses formed therein means slidably carried by the first mentioned hinge sections and having portions adapte'dto selectively engage the recesses, and means for operating said last mentioned means, said operating means including apivotally supported operating lever, a link connection between the operating lever and said last mentioned means, and a spring member controlling operation of the operating lever in one direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix signature.
HENRY O. WENZ-EL.
