Description
F. H. HUNTER.
Corn-Shelier.
NO. 163.377, Patented May18,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
'FRELINGHUYSON H. HUNTER, OF HELTONVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN=SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,377, dated May 18, 1875; application filed April 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRELINGHUYSON H. HUNTER, of Heltonville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Oorn-Sheller, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved corn-sheller. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line as w, Fig.1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in the class of corn-shellers having a ribbed surface, over which the ears are drawn by hand to free them of the kernels. The invention relates particularly to a chaff-box, which is formed of a sheet-metal plate applied beneath the ribs or bars of the sheller, in the manner shown in the drawing, and as hereinafter described.
A B is a small cast-iron frame, about eight inches in length, five inches in breadth, and about one and a fourth inch in thickness. The
frame consists oftwo longitudinal bars, A, connected by a number of cross-bars, B. The edges of the cross-bars B project above the side bars A, and are beveled or rounded off upon one side. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The side bars A of the frame A B are bolted to two wooden bars, 0, about fifteen inches in length.
D is a plate of tin or other light sheet metal, of such a width as to fit between the wooden bars 0, and of such a length that its ends may be turned up to overlap the outer sides of the outer cross-bars B, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate D thus forms a box to catch the kernel-husks or chaff that becomes separated from the cob.
In using the sheller, one end of the wooden bars 0 is placed in a box or half-bushel,with their other ends resting upon the edge of said box or half-bushel. The ear of corn to be shelledis held in the hand and drawn across the edges of the cross-bars B, by which the kernels are forced off the cob and are caught by the box or half bushel in which the sheller is placed. The chaff is caught by the box or plate I), from which it can be emptied out when desired.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the corn-sheller formed of the cross-ribs B and bars A, of the sheet-meta1 plate D, the same being applied beneath the ribs, and having its ends bent up to form a receptacle for chaff, 850., as shown and described.
