BRUSH ATTACHMENT FOR HOSE.
I Appiication filed September 18, 1925. Serial No. 57,068. I
The present invention relates to Washing appliances and more particularly to brushes and the like which are adapted to be attached to the end of a hose.- v
In certain washing or cleaning operations, such, for example, as the washing of dishes, windows, automobiles, etc, where a hose is used to direct a stream of water upon the article to be washed, it is found necessary or desirable in many instances to'supplement the action of the stream of water by some device, such as a sponge or brush which will help to loosenthe dirt so that it may be removed by the stream of water.
It is the object of the present invention to provide such a supplemental loosening or cleaning device which shall be cheap to construct, convenient to manipulate and easily and quickly attached to and detached from the end of the hose.
lVith these objects in view the present invention consists in the attachment for a hose hereinafter described and more particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate what is now considered the preferred form of the present invention, Fig. 1 is a top plan, and F ig. 2 a side elevation of a section of hose with the attachment in place thereon and Fig. 3 is a detail showing the hose nozzle.
In the accompanying drawing the attachment is shown as comprising a brush and a holder therefor which is arranged to be secured to the end of the hose. The holder comprises a body portion 4, straight longitudinally and arcuat-e in cross-section so that it is substantially semi-cylindrical in general form to fit the side of the hose. Rising from the body portion adjacent each end thereof and integrally formed therewith are the clips 6 which embrace the hose and hold the attachment securely in position. One end of the body portion is provided with the laterally-extending, oppositely-disposed, brush-attaching arms 8. The holder is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal of sufficient resiliency to permit the clips 6 to spring apart enough to allow the hose to pass between the free ends of the clips and then to be gripped firmly by the latter. Thus the holder may be easily and quickly attached to and detached. from the hose by a simple relatively lateral movement of the parts. 7
The brush 10 may be conveniently formed of bristles held by a twisted wire core 12. The brush and core are of loop form with the ends of the core extendingbeneath the bristles and secured to the supporting arms 8 of the hose by bending the ends of the arms tightly around the wire core.
The brush arms being substantially diametrically opposed with respect to the axis of the holder, the stream of water from the hose Will be discharged into the middle of the brush, thus permitting the hose to be used with equal efficiency with the body portion t of the holder either above or below the hose.
In the illustrated embodiment of the present invention the attachment is shown on the hose of a dish washing appliance in which the water is discharged through the nozzle 14 in a plurality of small forceful streams. To prevent buckling of the hose when the latter is used Without the brush attachment, the hose is provided with a spiral wire guard 16 which permits the requisite fiexibility and prevents a sharp bending of the hose at this point. It is not necessary to remove the guard before attaching the brush as the spring clips will yield sufiiciently to accommodate then'iselves to the slightly increased diameter of the guard. yielding character of the attaching means the holder can be adjusted longitudinally of the hose to bring the brush the desired distance from the hose or nozzle orifice and will hold the parts securely in adjusted position. 1
While the drawings illustrate, and the specification describes, an attachment in which the supplemental cleaning means are in the form of a brush, it is to be understood that the present invention is not limited thereto but other forms of supplementalcleaning devices may be employed.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed is: l
1. A brush attachment for a hose comprising a holder having a. body portion which is substantially straight longitudinally and arcuate in cross-section to fit the hose and which has a pair of attaching clips adjacent each end shaped to embrace the hose, the clips being formed integrally with the body portion with their free ends spaced apart to permit the passage of the hose laterally Furthermore, on account of the therebetween, a pair of oppositely extending brush supporting arms at one end of the body portion and integral therewith, and a brush comprising a twisted wire core with bristles secured thereto, the brush being formed in a loop with the ends of the core projecting beyond the bristles, and the brush supporting arms being bent around the ends of said core to secure the brush to the holder.
2. A brush attachment for a hose comprising a body portion arcuate in transverse section and adapted to lie along the side of the hose and having a pair of co-operating attaching spring clips formed integrally with said portion and adjacent each end thereof, the clips being spaced apart at their free ends to permit the passage of the hose therebetween, one end of the body portion 3. The combination with a flexible hose having a spiral wire guard to prevent buckling thereof, 01 a removable holder adapted to be disposed adjacent to the guard lengthwise thereof and having spaced clip portions to embrace the guard, and a brush attached to the holder and positioned adjacent theorifice of the hose.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificatlon.
