TEUMB-SUCKING PREVENTIVE FOR BABIES.
Application filed December 11, 1928. Serial '10. 154,076.
My invention relates to improvements in thumb sucking reventives for babies, and the object of my improvement is to provide a superior device of this class, in which the device is shaped to be self-seating on thumbs of different shapes and sizes while remaining loose enough to permit the passage of air around the thumb therein, to prevent a vacuum due to sucking, by causthe infant to desist unsatisfied.
This object I have accomplished b the means which'are hereinafter describe and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figs' 1 and 2 are respectively elevations taken'at an angle of ninety degrees from each other of said device, without the fastening cords.
Fig. 3 is adiminished view of the device as mounted upon a babys thumb and fastened cords to its thumb and wrist.
The device is a coned closed end cup, 1, made of some light and non-corrodible substance, such as bakelite or the like, and has one side partially removed to leave a 3 projection 2, integral with its body part.
The closed end 3 is supplied with numerous distributed small apertures 8, and the body part below said closed end is provided all around the numerous like apertures 4.
Apertures 6 are provided in the terminal tip of the projection 2.
When the cup is mounted upon a thumb loosely, a cord 5 may be passed through apertures 4 and then tied around-the thumb below the first joint, and another cord 7 may be passed through the apertures 6 and tied around the wrist of the child, these fastenings preventing displacement of the cup while-allowing it to set loosely upon the thumb. When the infant tries to suck the'cup 1, air is drawn throu hit freely which provents a vacuum orming, so the vchild derives no satisfaction from its sucking, and is weaned from the habit at once.
' As the device is a single piece structure, it is inexpensive and has no parts which may injure the child or become; entangled with its clothing. 5 Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the character described, com- 4 prising in combination, an elongated downwardly widened thumb covering having a rigid smooth walled body and a depending integral smoothstem on one side, the upper end of the covering being closed and pro: vided with small apertures, the outer side wall of the covering above and in line withsaid stemhaving small apertures, a flexible fastening device connected detachably to the neck part of said stem to fasten the device upon the Wearers thumb releasably, and an other flexible fastening device connected detachably to the lower terminal of said stem to fasten the device upon the wearers wrist releasably.
in testimony whereof I afiix mysignature.
