Application filed August 1, 1925, Serial No. 17,503, 'and' in Great Britain August 6, 1924.
-Tl1is invention relates to a machine for would be useful containers for accumu- I Y lator plates as well as tor other purposes arises from the fact that the walls of said boxes are necessarily thin and in order to obtain sufliciently homogeneous castings the metal must berapidly distributed throughout the mould in. a fluid state and then causedto cool rapidly in the mould.
f In addition themould must be of such a construction as to permit of its being readily opened to enable the cast-article to be withdrawn. w a
In order to eliect the desired objects I provide a mould consisting'ot two separable water cooled parts and a w-ithdrawable water cooled central core and I provide -means for injecting the metal into the mould suddenly under pressure.
In the accompanying drawings lustrated more or less diagrammatically a means for accomp'lishing the objects of my invention.
Innthese drawings Fig, 1 is a plan view of: a mould for casting rectangular boxes,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, Fig; 3 is a-sideelevation thereof, and
Fig. lis a diagrammatic side view ot the complete apparatus.
Referring tothese draw-ings the numeral 1 designates the mould bed-plate which has a mould core 2 mounted to slide in 'thedirection-of the arrow; A; This mould. core .is also capable of swivellmg onthe pivot 3 when the core 1s in its withdrawn position shown in Fig. 1. 'The mould is constructed in two similar parts l and 4e which-are slidable upon the bed 1 in directions at right angles to the arrow A. The bedplate 1 is provided with a nozzle orifice-5 which is 7 connected with a supply of molten metal Lil . .which is delivered to it under pressure as will hereaftenappear. The mould and its core are so arranged that a vertical plane passing throi-ig'h the orifice 5 wi'llbisect the angle formed by the adjacent walls of the box so that there will be an equal tendency for the metal to flow in both directions. This is an important consideration in practice.
Both the mould parts 4: and '4 and the mould core 2 are water cooled and in-so far as these mould parts and core are movable I have ilit isnecessary to provide a system of flexible pipes, the general system of which will be understood from Fig. 4. Uponreferring to this figure it will be seen that cooling water from asuitable source of supply passes by way of the pipes 6, 7 8 and 9to the mould core 2, which is hollow, flexible connections such as short lengthslof rigid pipes connect- To the by way'ot the pipes 6, 13, 14c and 15, the jomtsat- 1 1 and lo 'being flexible and after circulating through the mould jackets the waterpa'sses out to the outlet pipe 12-by way of the pipes 16, 17 and 18 provided with flexible joints 16 and 17 as before. A-sui'table valve, such as 19, may be provided to regulate the water supply.
ThenumeralJ2O designates an air vessel charged to a suitable pressure by means of the pump or compressor 21, a gauge 22 being "provided toindicate" the pressure in the [container or vessel 20. Compressedair,
trom thisvessel passes to the metal pot or container 23 byway of the pipeline 24 in which a stop valve 25 and a two-way cook 26 is provided. Apipe or conduit 27 de-' pends from] the metal orifice or nozzle 5 some way beneath the surface oft-he. metal 1n the metal pot or container 23 so as to ensure that themetal will be taken from be neatlrthe surface upon which dross and impurities' are liable to float.
' Theope'ration of the machine is asv tollows z-The mould core 2 is arranged rough- -1y 1n P03113101} by being pushed in by hand for the greater part of its travel and then finally screwed home by means ot'the' screw 28 formed on the rod 28which engages a thread in the fixed member29. l -he mould parts ,4, and 4 are thensimilarly closed on tothe core, the parts being first pushed tothe parts are adjusted to operate on casting position there will be a space between the mould parts and the core equal to the thickv gether arrjdthen finally tightened one against Y the other bymeans of the screws (BO-formed ness of the box to be cast. The two-way cook 26 is adjusted to its position for de livering air under pressure to the metal pot or container and the valve 25 is opened. By this means metal under pressure of the compressed air is forced through the orifice into the mould.
The two-way cock 26 is then moved into its second position where the compressed air passes to atmosphere and the pressure on the metal is instantly relieved and the valve is again closed. The metal has now been forced completely through the mould, driving out any air through openin s or air vents and 33 in the upper part oi? the mold provided for the purpose and by reason of the cooled mould the casting immediately sets. The mould parts i and at are now separated by first operating the screws and then simply pulling the mould parts away and similarly the mould core 2 withdrawn by first operating the screws 28 and then pulling the core out until its inner end is clear of obstruction when the core can be turned bodily about its pivot 3. The cast box which is on the core can then be removed and will be found to be a sound homogeneous casting.
It will be found that when the core is just shifted it can be withdrawn easily particularly if the mould parts and core are given a slightly tapering form.
After the mould has been opened and the core withdrawn in the manner before described the cast box attached to a tang or 7 break corresponding to the inlet orifice will remain and can quite easily be detached and finished off by the removal of the tang or break and the projections which have been formed by the passage of metal through the air escape outlets.
it will be seen from the foregoing that the essential conditions to be observed are the provision of comparatively cold mould parts and the sudden injection of the hot molten metal under such pressure in such a way as will cause it to flow rapidly and evenly throughout the mould and then solidify rapidly immediately the metal supply is cut off.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A machine for casting boxes and like hollow articles comprising a Withdrawable water cooled mould core, separable water cooled mould parts adapted to be closed upon and to position the core automatically, a reservoir for molten metal under releasable pressure, means for injecting the metal into the mould under sudden pressure in the direction of airvents or outlets in the mould,
and means for releasing the pressure substantially as specified.
2. A machine for casting boxes or like hollow articles according to claim 1 wherein the mould is so arranged and the metal injection nozzle so positioned that the tendency of the flow of the metal into the mould is substantially equal on both sides of a plane normal to the nozzle.
3. A machine for casting boxes and like hollow articles comprising a Withdrawable water cooled mould core, separable water cooled mould parts adapted to be closed upon and to position the core automatically, a reservoir for molten metal under releasable pressure means including a nozzle for injectin the metal into the mould under sudden pressure in the direction of air vents or outlets in the mould, and means for releasing the pressure, said nozzle being located at one of the edges of the box adjacent a corner and said mould being so constructed that a vertical plane passing through the nozzle bisects the angle between the adjacent sides of the box whereby the tendency to flow of the metal is equal on both sides of said plane. 7
4. A machine for casting boxes and other hollow metal articles comprising essentially a water cooled core and mould parts and means for supplying molten metal under controlled air pressure.
5. A machine for casting boxes and other hollow metal articles, comprising two mould parts mounted on guides so as to be movable to and from each other, and a movable mould core mounted on guides so as to be movable to and from the mould parts, said mould parts and said core having cooling water receptacles and a water circulating system consisting of rigid pipes communieating with said water receptacles and flexibly connected to accommodate the movement of the mould parts.
6. A machine for casting boxes and other hollow articles in accordance with claim 5, wherein the movable mould core is mount-ed on a pivot so as to be capable of both a sliding and pivotal movement in the same plane.
In Witness whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN ALFRED FULLILOVE.
