CLOSURE MEANS FOR MANHOLE OPENINGS IN STEAM BOILERS.
Application filed June 10, 1924, Serial No. 719,142, and in Germany June 11, 1 923.
The invention relates to closing members, i. e. end pieces, manhole seats and so forth, for the openings in steam boiler drums or containers, especially such as are exposed to 5 a pressure of at least 20 atmospheres.
According to the present invention, after introducing the seat menjiber into the opening, the wall of the drum or container is bent round the outer edges of the seat member which is held in place by any tacking means such as riveting, welding or the like.
According to one form, the wall of the drum may be provided with recesses into which the closing member is pressed; or again the closing member may on the one hand be overlapped by the wall of the drum and on the other hand may itself overlap this wall, in which case a double lock or seat is provided.
In drums for atmospheres and more, the usual riveting tends to weaken the plates of which the drum is built and thereby endanger the closing arrangements. According to the present invention, these disadvantages are eliminated by the special form and arrange ment of the members provided.
In the drawing, a form of construction of the invention is shown by way-of example.
The single figure is a sectional view showing the connection oi a seat for a manhole cover with the end-piece of a drum.
The drawing shows a seat, '6, for the manhole cover connected with the end-piece, 7), of the drum by tacking rivets, c. The outwardly turned edge of the end-piece, Z), is
high pressures, for example,
bent by anysuitable process over the seat, 0, trom the position, 6, shown in broken lines, so that it overlaps the seat. In a similar manner the inner edge, e, of the seat, 6, itseit overlaps the end-piece, b, the inner edge of the seat being bent from the position 6', shown in broken lines into the position shown in full lines. A manhole cover (not shown) is adapted to be pressed against the seat to by the pressure within the boiler, and such pressure is resisted by the flanges on theseat and on the drum, so that the rivets c are either subjected to no stress at all or only to a slight stress, and only a small number are required for tacking purposes.
By the means just described, the number of rivets may be minimized, thereby avoiding the weakening of the wall of the boiler adjacent the manhole opening.
Various modifications; may be made Without departing from the nature of my invention, as set forth in the appended claim.
Claim.
In a steam boiler adapted to Withstand a boiler pressure of QOatmospheres or more, and having a manhole opening in one-o1 its walls, the edge of the material of said Wall adjacent said opening being turned outwardly, a seat member against which a manhole cover is adapted to be pressed by the steam pressure within the boiler, said seat member having a peripheral flange bearing against the innersuri'ace of said Wall, the said outwardly turned edge having a flange overlying a portion of said seat member.
