Assuming-that the ma lever 31 disposed in the notch 33, anew spool is placed in the machine and the winder is started by pressure upon the pad 36 of the control lever 20. The machine continues in operation until the disc 32 completes its single revolution, during which time, however, it may be started and stopped by the operator as desired by applying and releasing pressure on the pad 36.
hen the revolution of the disc 32 is completcd. the end of the lever 31 enters the notch 33, the. chain or link 27 is pulled upward, and the lower toggle member 22 is rocked to break the toggle, as indicated by the arrow on in Fig. 6. The bell crank 19 is thus released, regardless of the position of the control lever 20, and the spring 37 promptly disconnects the driving pulley 13. in order to start the machine, it is necessary to first use the handle 35 to withdraw the lever 31 from the notch 33 and to relieve the tension on the chain 27, permitting the spring 24 to re tore the toggle members 22 to their original position. \Vhile the lever 31 thus held out of the notch 33, the machine may be started bv the usual pressure upon the pad 36 of the lever 20.
it is thus evident that I have so arranged my stopping mechanism that the machine remains at all times under the direct control of the operator, except at the point when the disc 32 completes its revolution, at which point the manual control mechanism is disabled and the machine is stopped regardless of the application of pressure on the lever 20.
Having thus described my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims but what I claim is 1. A, winder having, in combination, a measuring roll, driving mechanism therefor, means to make and manually maintain a driving connection to said driving mechanism, and a stopping device effective to disable said manual means and stop said measuring roll while said manual means remains in its normally operative position.
2. A winder having, in combination a measuring roll, driving mechanism therefor, a manual shifting lever for said driving mechanism, a connection through which said lever is effective to render said driving mechanism operative to drive said measuring roll, and automatic means effective to disable said connection and stop said roll after a predetermined actuation thereof and while said shifting lever remains in its normally operative position.
3.1; winder having, in combination, a measuring roll, driving mechanism therefor, including a clutch operating shaft, :1 manually operated controlling lever for said shaft, means to connect said lever rigidly with said shaft, and automatic devices effective to disable said connecting means and release said shaft from said manually operated controlling lever.
4. A winder having, in combination. a measuring roll, driving mechanism therefor, a manually operated controlling device for said mechanism freely movable to operative position, and additional and automatic means effective to disable said manually operated controlling device and thereby cause disengagement of said driving mechanism while said controlling device remains freely movable and in its normally operative position.
5. In a winder, a measuring device, driving mechanism, and control means for said driving mechanism, said control means including a clutch, a clutch operating shaft, abell crank fixed thereon. a control lever pivoted to one arm of said bell crank, a toggle connection between said lever and the other arm of said bell crank, and means to break said toggle connection, said latter means being normally held out of operation by said measuring device during a predetermined operation of said measuring device.
