Application lied le'hrnary $7, 1M Serial No. 695,491..
This invention aims to improve elevator systems and more particularly, though not exclusively, the door or closure operating instrumentalities therefor.
In the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an elevator car showing a portion of the elevator shaft door in elevation with arts thereof broken away to more clearly ilustrate the operating means therefor and the closure means for the car;
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section taken substantially-on the line 2 2 of F ig. 1 illustratin an example of interlocking means where y movement of one closure 'is edeted from movement of the other;
Fig. 3 is a detail front view of the interlocking means of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1 showing power actuated means operating the elevator closure means; and
Fig. 5 is a detailed side elevation of the power unit from which power is received to operate the aforesaid means.
This invention is rimarly, though not exclusively, concernedpwith the provi ing of power means to be o rated when the elevator car is in a pre etermined relation to closure or barrier means for elevator shaft openings to supplement or cooperate with manually opera J e door orclosure operating instrumentalties alread installed upon the doors for the several oors served b the elevator car and also to operate the c using means for the car itself.
In the drawings, an elevator car 1- is illustrated whichv may be provided with any apropriate motive po'wer to move the same to oading and unloading relation with the several floor openings served' by said car.
The opening of the elevator car through which the assengers enter or leave the car dp with closure means herein consisting of a folding gate 2 supported by rollers 3 engaging n suitable track at the top of the car 1.
The elevator car 1 is arranged to operate in the usual manner in a well or shaft 5 having openings such as that shown at 6 at the various floor levels served b v said cnr, said o nings being guarded by barriers prefera ly consisting of doors 7 formed in one or lmore relativeli sliding sections according to the width oft e openlngs required but here- 1n said door is composed of two sections 8 and 9, the section 8 bein arranged to slide by the section 9 to rovi e an opening substantxally the size o the o ening of the elevator car protected by sai gate 2.
The doors 8 and 9 for the elevator shaft openings are preferably arranged to be mannelly operate and herein by means consistmg of links 11 and 12 pivotally connected together at 13. The link 11 is pivotally secured .at its other end at 14 to a portionof the sliding section 8 of said door and the farther end of tle link 12 is desirably pivotally secured at 15 to a fixed bracket 16. An operating arm 17 is provided for one of said links, preferably the link 11 whereby said links 11 and 12 which constitute a togglie, may be buckled or broken and, by so omg, more the section 8 of the door to its open position, ap ropriate stops being provided to insure t e alignment of the links 11 and 12 in their straightened door closing relation shown in Fig. 1 to prevent o cning of said doors without first tilting sui links.
For convenience self-closing means are provided herein consisting of a cylinder 18 pivoted at 19 to a fixed part of thc elevator shaft. A iston 20 is arranged in the cylinder 18 an is connected by a rod 2l with the link 12 near its pivot 15. Also arranged within the cylinder 18 between the piston and a cap 20'I secured to thc end of the cylinder from which the rod 20 protrudes is a spring 22 which normally acts to force the piston 20 to the lower end of the cylinder 19, thereby causing the return of the links 11' and 12 to their straightened door locking positions. These links nrc mounted upon the inside of the doors 8 und 9 and in convenient relation to the. opening r in the elevator cur when the latter is brought to a position in front of said doors.
It is desirable at times to o iernte thi` doors 8 and 9 by ower rather t :in by manual means: there ore I provide a power unit 23 herein for convenience mounted upon the car 1 to more therewith :und 1:rvlcrnl1lv enibodying in its construction un electric motor 24 secured to the frame 25 of the elevator and having n worm 26 secured to its :irhor to operate a worm oem 27. The worm gen1- 27 is secured to n sha ft 28 journnlled to rotntr lll `to the dotted line in suitable bearings' provided in a 29 enclosing said worin w and worm, an 'to the and of the shaft 1I is secured erank disk 30hs apinltowhichalinkmatf tachd. o link 82 is connected witliaud adapted to impart desii'ed recprocatory movements to a. slide 33 arranged to slide in appropriate 'des 84 herein secured to the gutergside o the elevator 1 adjacent to the oor Any a 'ate means may be provided for oomliiipurigicrting the movement of the slide 83 to the movable door section 8 b ut preferably for this purpose' there is pivotall secured at #i6-to the slide 38 a contact memher 85 carryi at its free and a friction roll B7 adap at the proper tune, to be swung into gperative engagement with the link 12 (see g. 4) and to tilt said link, buckling the toggle formed by it and thelcver 11 and thus causing the door. to which the en'd 14 of said link 1l is attached to slide to its open `tn.
During e normal o ration of the elevator car up or down in e shaft or well it is desirable that the contact arni 35 be in its out-of-oontact position so ns not to interfere with the movements of the elevator until the oor of the car has been brought substantiall in register with one of the .floors of the aft and it is desired to open the door for passen cre to enter or leave the car.
To accomplis the roper positioning of the arm 85 and its friction roller 37 in operetve relatitn to a'tllile z)lisait 12, sail arm 3311s 'wi at arrange norm gcnm extend be nd the rear face of theslid andsda ,wheninacertain oeiiioxli to en e end 39 of a relativ cam te 4l).
The front face 41 of this plate is arranged to be ged by a ila-t surface 42 formed upon m1 tail piece substantially at right angles to the lo on of the contact arm 85 after sai i 35 has been swung outwardly to its link-engaging position from the full line position shown in Fig. 4
ition therein. The ent of the 38 witltitlie end 3?' mit sai durin e u war nieveinen o the slill-ets, togegther with said arm, causas said arm to be moved so that its flat surface 42 is in contacting and sliding relation with the face 11 of said cam plate, the initial movement of said slide being utilized for this To so the impact of the friction nien iber 3'! upon the link 12 said member 37 is resiliently mounted in the end of the arm B5 and yields slightly when the impact occnrs. The throw of the crank 31is'preferab] such that in addition to swingi the ling 12 upwardly to its full collapse position when the arm 85 and riction rolls 37 are ln operative relation thereto, the slide 33 will be moved a atei' amount than is neces sary to bring e tail 38 into en ement with the end 39 of the fixed cani plate 40 and to row the arm 35 to its operative position against the link 12. This movement is effected in substantially one half a rotation of the disk 3G, said disk however being permitted to rotate until the slide 33 is returned to its normal ste position wherein the eontactin member 5 is out of en' ga ement with elink 12.
e arrangement of the power driven or power operating instrumentalities is preferably such that even though the crank disk 30 makes a complete turn or moves the link 12 to its highest position and is then retracted to its normal starting position, the link 12 need not follow to its starting or door closing ition until later.
In ot ier words the :resent construction is arranged to move the ink 12 npwardl but not to move it downwardly and the c luder 18, istoii and sp1-in 22 ellect t e self closing of the door in ependently of said power means.
The operator may, by maintaining pres sure upon the operating lever, retain the door iii its upon position :is lon as hc Secs lit owing to the manner in which the link 12 is engnwerl by tlin actuating member 35, the lutter half of the rotation of the crank disk causing said actuating member merely to dwp away from said link and after reaching the end of the plate 40 to retract to its inactive full line position of Fig. 4 allowing the elevator cnr to ascend :ind descend without interference therewith.
'Ihe member 35 is preferably, though not essentially carried hy the elevator car tngethcr with the power actuating instrumentalitee 23. Therefore the car must be brought within n certain predetermined range of the elevator shaft opening 6, the door whereof is controlled by the manually o eriihle lever mechanism including the links Il and 12 whereby said actuated arm will strike said link 12 u n its bein thrown upwardly as hereinbe ore describ but in order to allow for the careless positinning o'f the cai' with relation to'sadopening by the operator, a slightly greater throw of the crank pin 3l than is normally reguired muy be and preferably is provided.
or example the tall 3S, in its lowermost position, is spaced from the end 39 of the plete 40 against which it contacts and this gap together with the movement required to swing the friction member 37 from its lower position shown in full lines in Fig. 4 to its slotted position of said ligure provides for any reasonable variation between the floor level ot' thc car and that of the door at which n binding is to he made whereupon the full opening of the door will be assured even though its initial opening lll) l tions due to the delayed or advance 'is advanced or retarded due to the variable sto'ping position of the car.
y e variations which would apparently occur at the end of the door openiii operaf contact with the link 12 by the arm 35 may be provided for by allowing ment of the arm 35 than is normally re nii-ed to move the door to' its substan. ially ll open position` which position wi ll be determined b i appro riate stops or resilient bum of t e uson type employed in a elevator doors but not shown herein. Should the elevator car be bron ht to a stop at a int iibove the threshol of the shaft openin and the upward movement of the carrier 83 continued beyond the point where the door would normally strike the full open sto s, the friction member 3'? being resilient y mounted. as hereinbefore mentioned, will yield s cientl by compressing the sprn 43 interposed tween the carrier for said riction member 37 and the arm 35 to absorb any reasonable excess movement ofl the openn I Within e scope and purpose of the invention the closure means2 herein the gate 2, for the entrance and exit opening of the elevator car may be manually operatedby the elevator o erator but referably means are provided or elfecting t e conjoint movement of said closure means and said door.
To this end means are refersbly mounted upon a movable parto the elevator shaft door, herein the section 8, said means being noi-mall retracted to o -tion wherein they wil not interfere with the ascent or descent of the elevator car but when it is desired to open the closure means for the elevator car and said car is iniroper alignment with a shaft opening, sai( means may be moved to a osition such as to effect the interloclri o the movable door section 8 with the c osure means 2 and thereb cause both of these parts to move together their open positions.
Anly appropriate device may be utilised for t e purpose just described but herein I have shown mounted upon the door B, a rocker iii-m 44 pivoted at 4 5 in a bracket 46 attached to said door and having, at its free end, a cross arm 47 carrying friction members 48. The arm 47 is pvotalll mounted upon the end of said ariii 4.8 a is adapted to be yieldingl held in operative position b a spring 4 Movable wit the arm 44 is a crank arm 50 connected by a link lwith one arm of a bell crank lever 53 pivoted at 54 to the door section 8. ne arm 55 of said bell crank 58 is slotted at 56 and receives a pm 57 projecting laterally from a sliding r 58, the latter arranged to slide in ap ropr'iate brackets 59 also carried by said oor. A spring 60 encircling said rod and respecmeinst for a greater movel] the Aties whereof are curve tively bearing against a collar 6l and one of said bearings 59, normally urges the rod 58 toward the right of Fig. 8 and into yielding contact with the iamb 62 ofthe elevator shaft opening when the door section 8 is closed.
The normal position of the member 44 and Vits cross arm 47, when the door B is closed, is that shown in dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3, wherein the cross arm L7 rests in enga nient with a contact plate 63 'upon oor 8. 'lhe plate 63 causes the cross arm 4T to he rocked upon the arm 44 to a position which vlaces the spring 49 under tension and hol s said cross arm substantially parallel'with and dat against said Elate. In this losition the arm 47 is held the rod 58 an connecting instrumentalities as long as the door section 8 remains closed and the said rod 58 remains with its end substantially flush with the forwaid edge of the door 8 and in contact with the ed 62 of the door jamb.
ounted u n the closure means 2 is a channeled plate 6l having 6iiioed and substantially parallel lian es the extremioutwardly to form Haring mouths 65. The channeled member 64 is positioned upon the gate 2 at a point to receive between its Ranges the cross ami 47 and its friction members 48 wlienthe latter are swung to lateral position by the initial opening of the door section 8.
The flan s 64 are desirably long enough to receive t e friction members 48 and their carrying arm even though the elevator car licor be stop ed slightly above or below the level of the oor at a selected opening 6 of the elevator shaft.
The transverse position of the channel member 64 is preferably such that when the door 8 is opened just far enough to clear the end of the rod 58z as indicated at Fig. 3, said dan will receive between them the two friction members 48 carried by the cross arm 47 as the latter are swung from their upper collapsed .positions to the interlocking position thereof and following which continued movement of the door 8 will reduce a like movement of said gate 2. In o her words the door 8 and the te or closure means 2 will be moved conjointly from the point where the interlocking action takes place to the fully opened positions thereof.
A brief description of the general operation of the invention is as follows:
The elevator car is moved to the desired Boor level and brought to a stop with the door of said car either in perfect alignment' with the licor of the opening 6-or within a predetermined ran e o said door. The operator of the car t n operates appropriate circuit controlling devices not shown enerizin the electric circuit containing the motor which causes said motor to, revolve lll! lll
the crank disk 30 and its crank pin 31 and thereby raise the slide 33, bringn the tail piece 38 of the contact member 3 into en gageinent with the end39 of the cam late 40. .Continued upward movement o the slide -33 causes the arm 3 5 to swin 1 from its full lino position of Fig. 4 to the otted line ition therein bringing the friction ineini: 3'? into en nient with the under side of the link i2. e slide 88 and arm 36 then continues upwiirdlg,v carrying said link 12 to its uppermost position when further opening movement of the doors other than that produced by the momentum of the moving parte toward their stggs, ceases but continucd rotation of the di 30 carries the crank pin back to its starting point 'where it preferably comes to rcs-t and the contact member 35 returns tn its collapsed position shown in fulllnes in Fig. 4.
The initial opening movement if tlic gate or doors S which stiirts the r-iilliipsin y of tlic toggle links' 11 und 12 thereby unloc ing the door. permits the spring shown moet clearly in Fig. 3 to ur the collar 61 toward the sto 59 an ,during this initial movement.` t ie sliding rod 5B will be held b its spring in contact with the jnmb of the e erutoi' shaft opening 6.
'llic lever 53 moves bodily with the door hut is rocked upon its pivot when thc rod 58 is .permitted to move in its guide or the door o ns and this relativo movement causes tie arm 44 to be swung downwardly from tho u per folded position to its channel interior: ing ositinn wliereu on continued movement oi) the door 8 wi l causo the lf ,rate to he fully collapsed moving conjoiiitly with said door 8. Tf it is desired to retain the door in its open position, the oporiitoi' muy, by pressure upon the handle 17, retain the same in such position and when further need of this is roiimved, a release of said arm will. in the present example, cause the toggle composed of the linl l1 and 12, to be straightened by pressure exerted thereon by the s' ring contained in the cylinder 18, thereby providing ii self closing .nouns for the elevator shaft door as well as for the car closure menus. As the door 8 uppi'oiiches the end of ils closing increment the forward end of liie sliding; member 58 will contact with the edge G2 of the door jiimli and he dcpiessed, thereby swinging; the lever 53 upon its pivot downwardly und drawing with it tiierod 51 which is attached by the rruiilc arm '50 to the arm 44. By this nun-'ement the arm 44- ivili swing upwardly bringiiil the 'u pcrmost roll i8 into engagement wit. the ,p ate 63 und cause the cross ui'in 47 to swing about its exis against the action of the saving 49 to its {oldi-d inoperative position shown in dotted lines in Figsl 2 and 3 where it will remain su long as the toggle composed of links 1i and l2 is in its straightened position wherein it serves as a lock to prevent operation of the elevator shaft door from the outside.
While I have herein shown and described merel for illustrative purposes one specific vmbo ment of my invention and have die closed and discussed in detail the construction andarrunguent incidental to suoli dis. closure, it is to distinctly understood that the invention is limited neither to the more details or relative arrangement of the parte nor to the specific application herein shown, but 'that extensive variations from the illustrations may bc made without departing from the principles thereof.
