ThisA invention relates to improvements in caps for paste tubes and one lof the ob'ects of the invention is to provide a cap w ich will not require to be wholly or partly un- B threaded from the tube'in order to dispense paste therefrom, so that the cap remains assembled with the tube until the contents of the tube have been completely discharged and there is, therefore, not the likelihood of losing the cap which is a frequent occurrence in the use of the ordinary paste tubes and their caps.
The cap embodying the invention is designed primarily for use in conjunction with collapsible tooth paste tubes and another object of the invention is to so construct the cap that a ribbon 'of paste may be delivered from the tube by Way of the cap and onto the tooth brush while the tube is held in the most convenient position for applying the paste and which does not hold true in the case of paste tubes having diametric delivery slots in the outer ends of their necks and which tubes are provided with removable caps, for in the use of such old devices it is necessary to present the tube substantially endwise to the tooth brush.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paste tube cap which will be easy to manipulate so as to effect opening and closing of the discharge orifice of the cap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. cap for collapsible paste tubes embodying structural features 4which will recommend its use to manufacturers by reason of thel facility by which, with slight modifications, it may be adapted either to the necks of tubes already produced, or embodied in the construction of tubes at the time of manufacture. l

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawlngs, it is to be presumed that the cap embodying the invention is to be applied to the. exteriorly threaded neck of an ordinary paste tube which is indicated in general by thenumeral 1, the said neck bein indicated by the numeral 2. The cap, 1n this embodiment of the invention, comprises two sections, one of which is indicated by the numeral 3 and comprises a frusto conical body of any suitable .metal or other material or composition of materials havin -an axial bore 4 formed therein opening, y an enlargement 5, through the bottom ofthe body and terminating short of the top of the body. The body is formed in the wall of the bore with a longitudinally extending slot indicated by the numeral 6, which serves as a discharge orifice for the paste to be delivered from the tube 1, and this slot is located bei tween the closed upper end of the bore and the enlargement 5 of the bore. The enlargement 5 of the bore is, as likewise the bore itself, cylindrical in form and smooth, and the bushing 7 is fitted into the enlargement 5 and is interiorly threaded as indicated by the numeral 8, the bushing being cylindrical and preferably of the same metal or composition of metals of which the neck 2 of the tube is formed, so that the threads ofthe vbushing will fit and match with the threads ofthe neck of the tube without any abrasion or breaking down of the threadsas might result from mutual cantact of different degrees of hardness. It will be observed, by
reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, that the bore 4 is of the same diameter as the. bore of the neck of the tube 2, so that a smooth and unobstructed passage is provided for the paste. It will also be observed by reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, that the enlargement 5 of the bore 4 of the section 3 of the cap and the bushing 7 are so proportioned that when the bushing, together with the said section 3 is fitted to the neck 2 of the tube 1, the upperends of the neck and bushing will abut squarely7 against the upper wall of the enlargement so that there is a firm union between the parts and no space is left for the accumulation of any of the paste. It will also be observed that the bushing is snugly .of the section 3, and the said section 9 is provided With a closed top indicated by the numeral 10, which engages the upper end of the said section 3 and this closed top is exteriorly preferably of the polygonal form shown in-Figure 1, or its periphery may be milled, or it 'may be fashioned in any other manner so as to permit of its being firmly grasped for the purpose of partly rotating it about the section 3. An opening 11 is formed in one side of the wall of the section 9 and by rotating the section in one direction or the other, this opening may be presented to the slot 6 or the slotmay be lcovered by the imperforate portion of the wall of the section 9, in the first instance providing for delivery of the paste from the tube and, in the latter instance, sealing the slot 6 in an air-tight manner so as to prevent any evaporation of the moisture of the paste and i caking of the same in the slot. Preferably,
the walls ofthe opening 11 in the section 9 are beveled, as indicated by the numeral '12, and this may be readily accomplished by chordally cutting away or removing a p0rtion of the wall of the body lof the section 9 or otherwise forming the section, and it will a screw 14 is fitted through this slot and threaded through registering openings 15 and 16 in the wall of the section 3 and in the bushing 7 respectively, and has a pointed or ta ered end 17 which bites into orsubstantial y through the neck 2 of the paste' tube. This screw 14 serves four separate and distinct functions, namely; first, it constitutes|a means for limiting the rotative adjustment of the section 9 upon the section 3; second, it maintains the section 9 assembled with the section 3; third, itmaintains the section 3 assembled with the bushing 7 or vice versa; and, fourth, it serves to secure the bushing 7 against rotative movement with respect to the neck 2 of the tube, which movement might result in unthreading of the cap as a whole from the tube. It will now be evident that due to the extreme simplicity of the structure and the novel manner in which the component parts of the cap are assembled and particularly due to the four functions served by the screw 14, the cap may be readily bodily applied in a mo-` ments time to any of the standard tubes.
As previously stated, Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, illustrate the embodiment of the princi les of the invention in a cap which may e readily assembled with standard sizes of paste tubes but it will be evident that so far as the rotative adjustment of the section 9 of the cap is concerned and the feature of the slot 6 and the peculiar formation of the opening 11, the cap or its bushing 7 might be integrally formed with the neck of the tube at the time of manufacture of the tube, or other similar deviations might be resorted to without detracting from the'advantages presented by these particular features.
Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings,l illustrate a slight modification of the invention, and in these figures the numeral 18 indlcates the paste tube and the numeral 19 indicates the neck thereof which is exteriorly threaded, as indicated by the numeral 20. annular bushing 21 corresponding somewhat to the bushing 7 is provided and is both interiorly and exteriorly threaded, and this bushing is fitted onto the neck 19 with its upper end flush with the upper end of the said neck. The numeral 22 indicates a holL low frusto-conical section comprising a part ofthe cap and which is'interiorly threaded at its lower end, as at 23, and fitted to the bushing 21. an opening 24 being provided in the wall of the section 22 near its lower end and an opening 25 being likewise provided in the bushing 21 and in registration with the opening 24` a screw 26 being fitted. through the said opening 24 and threaded through the opening 25 with its pointed end 27 iercing or partly piercing the wall of the 4 Anl the neck of the tube and likewise holds the section 22 from unthreading from the bushing. The inner section of the cap, in this embodiment of the invention is indicated by the numeral 28 and the same comprises a v frusto-conical body having a bore 29 therein of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the bore of the neck 19 and in registration at its lower end therewith, and a slot 30 corresponding to the slot 6 of the section 3 of the previously described embodiment of the invention-is formed in the said section 28 and provides for the delivery ot paste from the tube. The outer section 22 of the cap has a closed upper end 31 formed centrally with a cylindrical opening 32 in which is rotatably received a stud 33 formed upon the upper end of the section 28. The upper portion of the stud is preferably squared or otherwise formed to fit non-rotatably in an epening 34 provided centrally in a finger disc 35 which is disposed uponthe upper side of' the closed top 31 of the section 22, the stud being headed, as indicated bythe numeral 36, so as to hold the disc assembled with the stud. At this point it will be evident that by rotating the disc, the section 28 will be rotated within the section. The section 22 is formed in one side with an opening 3T vand it will be evident that by rotatably adjusting t-he section 28 through the manipulation ot the finger disc-35, the slot 30 may be brought into and out of position communicating with the said opening 37. In order that the rotative adjustment of the section 28 may be limited, the section is pre ferahly provided at its upper end with a stud 3S which works in an arcuate slot 39 formed in the under side of the closed top 3l of the section 22 and concentric to the stud 33. It will be evident at this point that while in the first described embodiment of the invention the outer section 9 is the section which is adjusted, and, in the last described embodiment the inner section 28 is the section which is adjusted, nevertheless, the construction and arrangement of the scctions is very similar.
ltwill be evident, with reference to the last. described embodiment of the invention, that some connection other than the Specific connection described might be employed between Vthe section 28 of the cap and the finger disc S5 and likewise some other means might bc employed for limiting the rotative :nl iustmcnt of the said section 28. Also, it will be understood that while in this latter emborlin'ient. as in the first described eml'iodimcnt, the cap is designed for application to the necks of paste tubes of standard size, the cap might, by slight modification, be made to constitute a part of the tube at the time of manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim 1s:
1. A cap for paste tubes comprising inner and outer sections assembled for rotative adjustment one with respect to the other and one being a fixed section, the sectionshaving openings to be placed in and out of communication in the adjustment of the movable section. ,and an element passing through the sections and maintaining the sections adjustably assembled with each other and for connecting the assemblage to the neck of a paste tube.
2. A cap for paste tubes comprising inner and outer sections assembled for rotative adjustment one. with respect to the other and one being ay fixed section, the sections having openings to be placed in and out of communication in the adjustment ot the movn able section, a. threaded bushingy assembled with one of the sections to fit the threaded neck of a paste tube, and a screw fitted through the last mentioned section and through the said bushing and having a piercing end to bite into the threaded neck of the paste tube, the other section having a slot. accommodating a portion of the screw, the said screw constituting means for holding the sections assembled, tor holding the bushing assembled with the second mentioned section, and for holding the assem blage to the neck of the tube and likewise for limiting the rotative adjustment of the movable section.
3. A cap for paste tubes comprising an i adapted to fit the threaded neck of apas'te tube, the said section having an opening 1n its wall for the discharge of paste delivered through the said neck of the tube, a section rotatably fitting the first mentioned section and having a slot extending partway around the same, the lastmentioned section having an opening therein to be brought into and out ot communication with the opening in the first mentioned section in the rotative adjustment of the second mentioned section, and a screw fitted through the slot and through the first mentioned section and the bushing therein and having an end for engaging the threaded neck of the tube, the said screw constituting means for holding the rotatable section assembled with the first mentioned section, likewise lmeans for limiting the rotative adjustment of the second mentioned section, and also means for holding the bushing assembled with the first lmentioned section and holding the entire as-
