The upper end of the arm 96 is provided with a fork 103 which engages the polished rod 104 so that the deflection of the polished rod as it reciprocates will causev a slight backward and forward reciprocation of the arm 96 as indicated by the dotted lines 105 in Fig. 6. Thus, it will be perceived that as the polished rod 104 is reciprocated, the arm 96 will be provided with a slight reciprocating rotary act-ion which will cause the pawl 97 to consecutively engage the teeth, of the ratchet 99, and thereupon rotate the screw .89, which in turn continuously feeds the wear of the polished rod as it passes through the cap 86. The friction plate 109 may be held in position in the top of the cap 86 by a small screw 110. A'small cup 112 is threaded upon the top of the cap 86 into which any oil that may be forced through the packing member may collect, and a drip spout, in the form of a pipe 113, is provided whereby the oil may drain from the cup 112 into a suitable receptacle, not shown.
In the horizontal sectional View shown in Fig. 7 I show the manner in which a feed screw 150 may be adaptedto feed a continuous strip of packing material 160 tangentially into a packing chamber 151 provided by a casting 152. It is advantageous to feed the strip of material into a packing chamber in this manner, as the direct pressure of the entering of the material is not then exerted directly against the shaft 153 but is added to the bulk of the material Within the packing chamber 151 so that the compression is exerted upon the shaft 153 from all sides.
From the foregoing descriptive matter, it
will be understood that the essential feature of the invention resides in the idea, and development thereof, of feeding packing material into a substantially closed chama her as the material contained therein is worn away by friction.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a packing device of the class de- I scribed, the combination of: a body providing a packing chamber directly surrounding the shaft to be packed; walls providing a receptacle for' holding a packing material; and rotatable means comprising a spiral member engaging said packing material and disposed between said packing chamber and said receptacle for forcing said packing material into said packing chamber.
2. In a packing device of the class described, the combination of: a body form- I ing a packing chamber; a shaft extending through said chamber; walls forming a receptacle for containing a packing material; and rotatable means therebetween, and comprising a spiral member which engages said packlng for manually forcing said packing against said shaft.
3. In a packing deviceof the class de-' scribed the combination of: a shaft; a body forming a packing chamber around said shaft; walls forming a receptacle around said shaft for holding a supply of packing material; and manually operable means comprising a spiral member engaging packing disposed around said shaft for forcing said packing into said packing chamber. 6
