ATENT GEORGE S. KNAPP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,017, dated May 11, 1875; application filed March 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, GEORGE S. KNAPP, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pocket-Books, of which the tollowing is a specification:
My invention relates to a device tobe applied to pocketbooks, to prevent them from being lost or abstracted from the pocket.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of two' swinging arms, to spread apart within the pocket, and a slide, by which they are operated and locked in position; and also in the combination therewith of an alarm, to give notice in case of the device being operated by improperv parties.
Figure 1 represents a face view of my device applied to a book, the two arms being closed together. Fig, 2 represents a similar view of the device with its arms spread apart as when in use, and Fig. 3 represents an edge view of the device in position.
A represents a thin metal plate, provided with lips or points a, for securing it in place on the book, and having its edge curled or bent backward in such manner as to support the plate and leave a space under or behind it when it is in position. The plate is also provided with two vertical slots, 1), a notch or hole, 0, near its upper end, and two studs or pivot-pins, d, near its sides, as shown. B represents a slide, mounted under or behind the plate A, and provided with a curled protruding end or thumb-piece, c, with two studs, 9, which project through the slots in plate A, and with a lip, h, to enter the notch 0 in the plate.
The slide is made of elastic metal, and is bent or sprung in such manner that when pushed inward its lip It will spring up into the notch e, and prevent the slide from moving until its end is depressed to disengage the lip.
O 0 are two swinging arms, each having its inner end pivoted on one of the studs 9 of the slide, and provided with an oblique slot, i, which receives one of the studs d on the plate g. The two arms are alike in all respects, except that one swings to the right them outward in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to prevent the. ends of the arms from cutting the pocket, they are folded or bent into a round or spherical form, as shown.
In order to give an alarm in case of the device being operated by pickpockets, I secure to the back of the plate A a vibrating spring, D, a bell, or any other device to be operated by the slide, which will give a clear and distinct alarm, either an audible one, or one which will be felt by the person carrying the book.
In using the device it is secured to the side of the book in the manner shown, and then, as the book is inserted into the pocket, the slide is pushed inward until the arms are spread apart within the pocket and locked in position by the lip of the slide engaging in the notch in the plate.
The arms are made to spread to a width greater than that of the mouth of the pocket, and, consequently, when locked in position, the book cannot possibly be lost or withdrawn from the pocket.
When it is desired to remove the book from the pocket, the end of the slide is depressed to unlock it, and then it is drawn outward to close the arms together.
When the arms are closed, the device presents a smooth and compact appearance, and is in no way objectionable in handling and using the book.
The alarm attachment is not a necessary part of the device, and may be omitted when desired.
I am aware that safety attachments with swinging spreading arms have been heretofore made and used, but of a different and far more complicated construction than the one herein described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination of the plate A, slide B, and slotted swinging arms (J, as shown and described.
2. In combination with the swinging arms 0 and slide B, an alarm, D, operated substantially as described.
